9401 I12003  Gregor  Charles Wesley  Aug 1873  10 Jun 1964  He appears to have been a boarder in Oliver Township, Huron County, Michigan at the time of the 1900 Federal census. He was listed as being born August, 1873, in Canada/English, with both his parents being born in Germany to German speaking families.

From "The News from Crieff November 6th 1923" newspaper: "Mrs. Louisa Schwegler, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Benkelman, and Mr. and Mrs. John Benkelman motored from Cass City, Michigan, and spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gregor and family."

The STRIFFLER-BENKELMAN BROACAST-1964 reported that the family lived in Guelph, Ontario.

9402 I5965  Gregor  Donelda Helena  Abt 1902  Yes, date unknown  The October 3, 1924 issue of The Cass City Chronicle, page 4, column 4, noted in Local Items that "Mrs. Benjamin Schwegler and Mrs. Fred Jaus entertained a number of relatives and friends at the home of the latter Wednesday evening in honor of their niece, Miss Donelda Gregor of Puslinch, Ont., who was visting...the time was passed pleasantly in vocal and instrumental music and games after which refreshments, including a weenie roast, were served." In the August 26, 1927 issue of the same paper, also in Local Items, it was noted that "Miss Laura Jaus returned Wednesday evening from a ten-day visit with her Aunt at Puslinch, Canada. Her cousin, Miss Donelda Gregor, returned with her and will spend a few weeks with relatives here."

Art Peck shows that Donelda married James McDonald on 1 Feb 1936.

THE STRIFFLER-BENKELMAN BROADCAST-1961 reported that "The James McDonalds, Puslinch, Ontario, are building a new barn this summer to replace the one destroyed by fire on December 17. They lost twenty three cattle, three horses, and thirty one pigs, a shed, hen house, and farm machinery."

Volume 28 of the STRIFFLER-BENKELMAN BROADCAST, dated September 2, 1968, reported that Mr. and Mrs. Douglas? McDonald had sold their home at Burlington, Ont. and built a new one in London, Ont. She is the daughter of Laura Schwegler Gregory.

According to Art Peck, they had two sons, Douglas and Paul, and lived in Puslinch, Ontario. At the time of the publication of his book, both were deceased. Douglas married a Gladys Haugh, and had two children, Brent and Michelle. Paul married a Wendy, and had two children as well, Amy and Leslie.

ABERFOYLE

Paul McDonald has fiddled around with the Puslinch Fiddle Orchestra ever since it got its initial start in 2005.

But in reality, fiddling has been part of McDonald's life since he was 10, says the 63-year-old, who was raised on a farm in Crieff.

"My mom and dad bought me my first fiddle when I was 10 years old from Sears," he recalled. "They brought it home and on Christmas, I opened it and it was a violin."

Fiddles and violins are the same instrument, according to McDonald. The difference is the type of music played. Fiddling relies on the lower notes, while violins are played on higher notes.

The music is distinctively different, where violinists play classical music and fiddlers go for homegrown music like jigs, reels and waltzes.

"It's old-time country Scottish fiddle tunes," he said of the type of music used by fiddlers.

"The only difference between a classical violinist and a fiddle player is about $60 an hour," he quipped.

The price of the instrument used by classical violinists and fiddlers differs substantially. McDonald paid $5,000 for one of his fiddles, while violins can go for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

His mother Donelda was a pianist at church functions and get togethers and it was her guidance and playing alongside her that slowly honed McDonald's fiddle skills.

"I had no lessons so I played on one string for about six months," he said. "I didn't know how to play all the strings."

His mother asked him to play the music scale and he quickly realized it could not be done playing one string. That prompted him to work hard at mastering the fiddle and its four strings. Eventually he took piano lessons.

"The piano helped me to read music," he added, something that has made his main love, the fiddle, easier to learn and play.

As a teenager he was part of a band, the Country Squires, that played dances. The band had McDonald on fiddle, a drummer, bass player, and guitar. The group played around the countryside until McDonald was in his early 20s. Due to family commitments, he stopped playing on a regular basis, but continued to play the fiddle at home and at family gatherings.

Eventually he would get back at it on a regular basis, forming the Puslinch Fiddle Orchestra.

"It was January of 2005 we started a group at Duff's Presbyterian Church just for something to do in the afternoon and we had five fiddlers and that was just local people," he said. "We set up a schedule and played every third Sunday."

He doesn't know how the word got out, but eventually the tiny group was getting inquiries from other fiddle players wanting to join them for jam sessions.

"It started growing and from there people started coming from Brantford, Stoney Creek, Guelph and the surrounding area," he added.

The church allowed them to practice for free with the understanding they would host an annual concert with proceeds to cover the rental cost.

In 2006 the orchestra and its 43 musicians, including 27 fiddlers, put on their first concert at Duff's - it was sold out.

The church, according to McDonald, can hold about 220 people and offered the orchestra good acoustics and a sound system. Proceeds from the concerts has gone back to the church to cover the orchestra's rental. Any additional money is used at the discretion of the church.

Since 2006, the concerts have been expanded to two and, at one point, three shows, with tickets going for $15. They have sold out every time.

"About seven years ago, Paul McDonald started up the Puslinch Fiddle Orchestra to play old time music, as it was played in the country here in earlier years," local historian Marjorie Clark told the Advertiser in an email.

"There are now approximately 28 fiddlers in the group as well as a pianist (Paul's wife Wendy) and a few guitarists. They hail from far and wide and they are good."

McDonald said the popularity of the orchestra has meant more inquiries about putting on concerts at other churches, something they do when they find time.

Other church concerts are done by donation. They have concerts planned for later this year at Millgrove United Church and Knox Presbyterian Church in Acton.

Most recently they've had an inquiry about participating in a festival out east, but McDonald doesn't think the orchestra will hire a bus and make the trek.

Concerts are usually held during the day because members don't like travelling after dark, he said.

What McDonald has to consider for events for the orchestra is the age of its members and the impact a hectic concert schedule might have. The majority of the musicians range in age from 60 to 90.

By coincidence, McDonald met one of the musicians when he was out on a job for the heating company he works for.

"I was fixing his furnace one day and he asked me 'What do you do'?" McDonald recalled. "I said I play fiddle and he said, 'Me to,' and he started coming out."

As the main organizer for the orchestra's concerts, McDonald usually sends out the written music and a CD of the tunes in December that will be used at the main Duff's concert later the following year.

That allows the musicians to fine-tune each song individually in preparation of practices and the final concert. The concerts also feature solo artists as well as a the full orchestra playing.

McDonald also repairs and makes fiddles using Canadian wood. It's essential the wood has tight growth rings to get the sound of the fiddle to exacting standards. The wood of choice is spruce for the top panels, and maple for the sides and back. The tuning pegs and fingerboard are made of ebony.

McDonald is proud to acknowledge the fiddles are made from all natural products, including the wood and horse hair bows. Even the glue used to put them together comes from an insect in India.

The instruments have no frets for the musician to follow, as is the case with guitars. He said musicians can buy a fret board to lay on the fingerboard, but that is frowned on.

"That's a no-no," he added.

The notes of the strings, from lowest string to highest string, are G,D,A,E, with the E the most difficult to tune, he said.

The strings are tuned a fifth apart, which means the number of tone intervals between one string and the next is five. In practice, this means playing a string together with its neighbour gives a nice sound, a chord in fact. A lot of fiddle players use this "perfect fifth" sound to tune the fiddle, but it takes practice and experience.

Most fiddles are tuned with the pegs and then the fine tuners are located on the bridge. Some fiddlers tune all strings to be fairly close using the pegs, however, McDonald prefers to use the fine tuners on the tailpiece to get tuning accurate.

It also allows him to tune his strings while playing. Some musicians tune the A, then the E, and then the G and the D. They will then re-do the A and E, as tensioning the G and D can change the tension of the other strings.

McDonald has even worked out a routine close to the end of a concert to inject some humour and to thank those who attended.

At one concert he built a fiddle that would explode. Prior to it coming apart, the audience thought it was an expensive fiddle. When they saw it explode they were shocked.

"The top flew off and the people thought it was a new Stradivarius," he said.

It was a routine he had fun with, although it can only be done at the first concert because the trick would be known to subsequent concertgoers.

Besides playing historical tunes, McDonald said musicians continue to come up with new tunes.

"There's a lot of fine people in Canada who write good, old-time fiddle music," he said, pointing out well-known Fergus fiddler Scott Woods.

This year the orchestra is planning its first Christmas concert at Duff's - tentatively scheduled for November.

"It's a wonderful group," he said of his fellow musicians. "It's enjoyable, the outcome is so rewarding."

Chester Schultz and Lincoln Gregor of Puslinch, Ontario, who have been visiting relatives here, left the latter part of the week for Kingston.

At the time of the 1930 U.S. Census, a 22 year old Lincoln Gregor was a boarder in the home of John and Ida Larson of Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan [ED 63-61, SD 14th, Sheet 9A, Stamped 60, 374 Oakland Avenue]. He was listed as born in Canada, to Canadian parents, and as employed doing Auto Metal Finish. Despite the difference in the place of birth of his mother, this does appear to be the same Lincoln Gregor.

"Mom was born at 140 S. Whitney Ave, Youngstown, Ohio on 12/21/1913. She went to Washington Elementary School: started When 6 because she was so tiny. She skipped a half grade when she began to grow. Graduated from Chaney High School in 1931. Worked as a receptionist/bookkeeper in a dentist's office for $5/week for one year. She then worked at Kresge's 5 & 10 store as a clerk until she got married in 1936.Mom met dad while walking up Mahoning Ave. He was in a convertible with Bob Brown, a friend. She and a friend went for a ride with the boys. They dated 20 months and got married April 24, 1936.They lived in a apartment in Greenville, PA, in Dad's cousin's house. The rent was $15/month. Dad was a foreman on the highway earning $75/month. They lived there 11 months and then moved to Youngstown where Dad got a job at United Engineering as a machinist. Lived at 139 Halls Heights with Grandma and Grandpa. They sold the house to Mom and Dad for $3000 and bought the house on LaBelle, across town."

9452 I20836  Griffith  William Edward "Red"  11 May 1912  25 Jan 1983  William Billig emailed Tom Strong in April 2005 a story told by his Aunt Florence concerning her wedding. Apparently, Uncle Red's sister, Mary Louise was a true prankster. She quilted Red's pajamas so they couldn't be worn and made sure that rice was in and over everything where they spent their wedding night.

Grandma Mable Laverne tended to rule the roost, so Grandpa's name was Griffith while my Uncle Red (William) was the boss and had his listed as Griffiths. The boys still prefer Griffiths and I believe tend to use it. I really should change it to Griffith since that is how it is spelled legally.

He tried to learn as quickly as he could, followed directions, and took his job and training very seriously. He was assigned to be a truck driver at his station. So he practiced and practiced all of the drills associated with his new position, the pole, the suiting up, speed and accuracy, the whole nine yards. Finally came the opportunity to respond to his first fire as the new engine driver. The alarm went off, and he sprang into action doing everything flawlessly. As he arrived at the fire in record time, he learned that he had only made one mistake. He had left all of the other firefighters back at the station. Shortly after he arrived came the rest of the crew hanging out of the chief's car. Grandpa reportedly received the chewing out that he deserved." Appointed as a cadet firefighter. Born in America. Hose Co.9 @ No.1 1910's.

Another amusing story about William Griffith was supplied by William Billing of Michigan. It was found an old newspaper, likely taken from the Youngstown Vindicator. The date is unknown. The article is titled, "Premature". " William Griffith, city fireman of Hall Heights Ave., says he refuses to take a hint. In fact, he wants to keep on living for a while yet, even if a local mortician does have his number. One evening last week a florist's truck stopped in front of his place, the driver stepped to the porch and hung a crape on the door! "Goodness sakes!" exclaimed a neighbor. "What on earth has happened to Bill? I didn't know he was even sick." "An accident?" someone remarked. So the neighbors stepped over to extend their sympathy to the bereaved family. "What has happened?" they asked at the door. "Nothing," was the response. "Why the funeral decorations, then?" It wasn't pleasant to find the crape hangers had been busy, but it was all due to a mistake in address.

9461 I5716  Grimes  Nicholas  15 Mar 1766  17 Nov 1831  Charles Strong located what appears to be an account of the sale of a portion of the property of George Pain dec'd, as settled with Nicholas Grimes, the administrator for George Payne. This was in Bourbon County records, Book D, page 16. This particular document showed the collection of 120 British pounds, 4 shillings, and 4 d. for the hire of Negros. Interest on the above was some 28 pounds. Of the amount collected, it appears that Nicholas Grimes was paid 52 pounds, 16 shillings and William CLARKSON, Samuel SCOTT, and George THOMAS were due 96 pounds, 4 shillings. This was dated September, 1809.

He moved to Bourbon county in about 1806, where his home was known as "Loudoun Hall." His wife's descendants write that his step-children remembered him in Kentucky as a slave-owner and a cripple, unable to walk. (Payne, p 261).

Charles Strong located his will in the Bourbon County, Kentucky Will Book J, p 27. He apparently had been married prior to his marriage in 1803 to Mary Payne (nee Coe). His will names a daughter, Fanny Wilson, her son, Nicholas Wilson (a minor). He also names his three sons as John Grimes, Washington Grimes, and George Grimes. The will was dated October 7, 1831 and witnesses were Peter CLARKSON, John BUCHANAN, and Jno. BROOKS.

9489 I30211  Gunn  Homer Floyd  24 Jul 1907  9 Mar 1984  Lynell Gentry Cordell received the following information about Homer Gunn from his son, Harold Gunn: "Homer was the pastor of Baptist churches in Kewanee, Matthews and Neelyille, Missouri, Fayetteville, Arkansas and Oklahoma City, OK. He was a well prepared, scholarly preacher and a forceful, articulate speaker, but disliked the administrative duties of being a pastor. When he was pastor of Central Avenue Baptist Church, Oklahoma City, his largest pastorate, he was elected Vice President of the American Baptist Association, a large national organization of Baptist churches.

He became an Interstate Missionary for the North American Baptist Association about 1951. This career change satisfied his longing to return to the type of ministry he loved the most. When he first became a minister, he had conducted a highly successful revival in La Forge, Missouri, then organized a church that literally changed the character of the entire community. Homer's interstate missionary work took him all over Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, where he established many Baptist churches, then led them into organizing into NABA affiliated state associations. His family lived in Marion, Rockford and El Paso, Illinois, while he traveled and performed his work. These were difficult years for Carmen, because she had to bear most of the family burden while their six children were young and in school. During the last 8-10 years before his retirement, Homer took Carmen with him on all his travels.

Homer retired in 1974 and moved from his home in El Paso, Ill. to Quitman, AR, Carmen's home town, in 1976. Illinois Baptists gave him a new car as a retirement present. During the remaining ten years of his life, he and Carmen were members of Sand Springs Baptist Church, near Quitman. He turned down several requests from area churches that wanted him to serve as an interim pastor. He loved tinkering with machinery, travel, history and reading.
He died at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, after an unsuccessful heart valve replacement operation. He had Rheumatic fever, which damaged the valve, when he was a boy. After the operation, the doctors were unable to revive him. His funeral was held at Sand Springs Baptist Church and he is buried in the Gunn family plot at Kilgore Cemetery, Birdtown, near his parents. Several of his boyhood friends from the same small rural community, all now prominent Arkansas Baptist ministers, spoke at his funeral.

Kilgore Cemetery, where he is buried, is next door to the farm where Homer lived as a boy. The entrance to the farm is marked by two large oak trees, planted by Homer and Carl when they were boys. At their father's burial service at Kilgore, Homer and Carl argued enthusiastically about which of them had planted the larger of the two trees.
Homer was 6' 4", black haired and 160-170 pounds. He wrote poetry, was artistically inclined and was a good musician. His voice was a medium baritone, with good volume."

9495 I47929  Gunther  Gabriel Benedict  21 Mar 1929  19 Jun 2022  Gabriel Benedict Gunther was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 19, 2022, at age 93. He passed away peacefully in San Antonio, TX, at the Audie L. Murphy Veterans Health Care Center. He was the most devoted, loving, and caring husband, father, and grandfather who is so deeply missed. Gabriel completed his education at the railroad and transportation school in Kansas City, MO. Gabriel met his wife of 62 years, Sonja Tessar, in Crete, NE, and they married on August 13, 1960, later having two children, Grant and Sheryl. He retired in Lincoln, NE, after a 42-year career as a supervisory agent for the Burlington Northern Railroad. During his life, Gabriel enjoyed serving the Catholic Church, the Rotary Club, and the Veterans of Foreign War and American Legion Clubs.

Gabriel was beloved by everyone who ever met him, and his giving, caring, and selfless nature brought such happiness to all those around him. The Find A Grave memorial page has her DOB as 8 January 1890, but no headstone photo to verify. . This matches the 1900 census, show her born in January 1890 in Mississippi. The SSDI instead has her DOB as 8 January 1889. Her last residence on the SSDI was shown as Pascagolua, Jackson, Mississippi.  STR06
9497 I48082  Gupton  Wesley Woodford  7 Nov 1857  1 Nov 1929  On the 1900 Jackson County, Mississippi Federal Census, Wesley Gupton is head of household living with wife Rena (b. March 1877, age 23, Married 8 years, mother of 2 children, both living). This would put the year of her marriage around 1892, at age 15. Wesley was a farmer, and his wife and both daughters were listed as farm laborers.

It is assumed she is the stepmother of Mary (born 1884) and Vernon (born 1890)...and those MAY be the two living children she is shown as the mother of on the 1900 census.

Family Search shows Wesley Woodford Gupton as a son of William Wesley Gupton and Flora Patterson.
