9207 I3490  Gomer  James Frederick  Abt 1797  Abt 1869  "The Gomer family came to Sabine County, Texas from Giles County, Tennessee between March 2, 1836 and August 19, 1836. He rec'd a Second Class land grant of 1280 A. located and surveyed in what is now Parker County. Evidently he never moved from Sabine County as records show that he bought land in 1844, located in the John Haley Survey, south of Housens Bayou near the Yellowpine community. James Frederick Gomer was typical of the average settler of his time, industrious, honest and determined to have a home in the new country. He raised his family by old fashioned standards, to obey their parents, honor God and country, and respect themselves and their neighbors. He owned a few slaves, according to the records, and a large slave cemetery is located near the Old Gomer Cemetery." (White and Toole)  STR06

Marcille Gooch Moore

Marcille Gooch Moore was born the oldest child of Lawrence and Ida Youngblood Gooch Jan. 8, 1921, at Sabinetown. On Feb. 8, 2009, in San Augustine, she succumbed to complications of Alzheimer's disease and receiving her promise of eternal life, joined in heavenly paradise her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and all her loved ones who have gone on before.

Marcille is survived by her husband, Madison Moore, of Port Arthur; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Jeannie Coday of Lake Jackson and Frank and Virginia Coday of Hemphill; brothers, R. F. Gooch and wife Dorothy and J. E. Gooch and wife Nina of Hemphill; and sister, Pauline Neal of Nacogdoches. Also surviving are step-daughters Johnnie Lee O'Dell and Billie Jean Legg of Silsbee, Patricia Donnelly and Sondra Thompson of Port Arthur, Willie Mae Harvey of Newton, Louis Adkison of Hemphill, and step-son, Richard Moore of Woodville. Other survivors include nieces, nephews, grandsons, granddaughters, and grandchildren all of whom are a living legacy of her marriage to three wonderful, loving husbands.

Marcille was predeceased by husbands, H.D. Coday, Sr. and Delton Jones, her parents, siblings C. P. Gooch, Edelle Jackson and step-children Florene Casciola, Maurice Salles, Mildred Merritt, Aliene Belaire, and H. D. (Sonny) Coday, Jr.

Upon graduation from Hemphill High School in 1938, Marcille moved to Houston where she employed as a telephone operator by Southwestern Bell. She met and married Drexel Coday, a widower with seven children. From that union, Roger and Frank were born.

After the death of her first husband in 1969, Marcille married Delton Jones. They shared their final years of employment with Temple Lumber Company as they both moved toward retirement. After Delton passed away, Marcille met and married Madison Moore. Their lives together were filled with activities, surrounding family, church, travel, the Hemphill Senior Citizens Center, Eastern Star, and Madison's Masonic activities.

Marcille was a strong woman. Her life epitomized the strength and where-with-all exhibited by pioneer women of her first husband's age (he was born in 1894.) Although she was a sensative, loving woman, she could and did work like a man. In 1954 at LaBelle, while helping Drexel and the hands work cattle in spring roundup, she was cornered in a corral and knocked flat by an enraged 900 pound Brahman bull. The "working hands" were amazed when two hours later, although banged and bruised, she had picked herself up, gone back to work, and under shade trees near the corral, served a hot noon-time meal to the cowboys.

A visitation was held from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Starr Fuenral Home, Hemphill.

Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Aaron Pardue, First Baptist Church of Hemphill assisted by Rev. Jim Salles of West End Baptist Church of Beaumont at 1 p.m. Wednesday, (today), Feb. 11 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Hemphill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be J.E. Gooch, Robert G. Neal, Sr., Tommy Neal, Dean McGee, Josh Thompson, John Edwin "Butch" O'Dell, and Ted O'Dell.

Services are under the direction of Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill.

Some six weeks since Dr. Evans married the daughter of R. K. Goodloe, of Sabine town, Texas, and she now mourns the loss of an affectionate and loving husband, called from earth and its busy scenes by the hand of her own brother, G. B. Goodloe. On the 14th inst. Dr. H. W. Evans was arrested on a charge of bigamy, by G. B. Goodloe and Porter Brown, without warrant or authority, as is stated. They took him some eight or ten miles, to near or at the Sabine River, and there shot him to death. Evans had $25 in money, of which he was robbed; And some native gold in his possession, with his hat and valuables, to the amount of $100, were taken from his body by these parties, Goodloe and Brown. The charge of bigamy was totally unfounded, and the arrest was in fact made by the two parties without warrant and they were, furthermore, not officials one, Goodloe, living in Texas, and the other, Brown, living in Sabine Parish, Louisiana.

The citizens of Texas and Louisiana residing near this occurrence are very much excited and highly incensed at this murder, and have subscribed a large sum, some $1200 or $1400, as a reward for the capture of Goodloe and Brown.

Kay Brown Simon, a descendant of William Porterwine Brown, writes that her great-great-grandfather, was a friend of Garrett Benjamin Goodloe, and that this association "got Porterwine the gallows." However, Carolyn Brown-Heitzman, in subsequent research with others, has concluded that this is incorrect, based on the age of the Porter Brown hung in Many, Louisiana (age 23 and unmarried) compared to that of William Porterwine Brown of E. Feliciana Parish. These other reasearchers have concluded that the two Porter Brown's were two different men.

"Miss Pattie" as she was fondly called lived a life of love and service exemplifying the life of our Lord. "Who went about doing good, ministering to the sick and needy---obeying the injunctions of scripture where we are told, that pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in time of their afflictions and to keep ones self unspotted from the world and her entire life was lived in harmony with this scripture and its teachings. All her life was thusly lived in Sabine County.

The above named relatives and a host of life long friends mourn her going.
"Servant of God, well done, Thy glorious warfare is past, The battle is fought, the victory won ___And thou are crowned at last."

The funeral was conducted from the First Methodist Church, the pastor officiating. Interment was made in the Hemphill cemetery.

Lizzie and Ada were both outside playing with their Moma cooking inside and Papa and brothers in the field. It was in the fall around October because the persimmons were ripe on the tree and Lizzie was getting some for them to eat. Lizzie told her sister "Look Ada there's a big one !! that's mine!!" and reached out to get it and the tree limb cracked and broke. The limb didn't break off but Lizzie fell and broke her neck. Moma Mac said she gasped and died right there in front of her. Moma Mac ran to get her mother and her father from the field but nothing could be done for Lizzie. Moma Mac said her Papa cut down that persimmon tree, and that she would never forget that event as long as she lived.
