On the 1890 Sabine County Scholastic Census, James and Hannah's oldest daughters, Maggie, 11 and Pearl, 8 were shown as enrolled in School No. 15, Hemphill. W.T. Arnold was on of the trustees of this school.
Herman suffered from tuberculosis, and spent some time at a hospital in San Angelo when his children were still young. His wife and their eldest children, ranging in age from 14 to 10 had to bring in the crops while Herman was hospitalized. James Roland Fuller recounted that "what kept us going beyond our own best efforts was the help and encouragement of the good people of the county, especially their friends and neighbors in Rosevine, who came to help work the crops. Many of them pledged one days work each week, as needed, even while busy with their own crops. With their help and the grace of God we were able to survive."
When Herman returned, he was not able to farm. He traded his animals and equipment to a local store owner as a down payment on the store. He also was hired by the Rosevine school district to pick up and deliver students to the school. Ruth also helped at the store. As the years passed, Herman regained enough strength to operate stores and service stations throughout east and southest Texas.

The DAR application of Mary Elizabeth Brooks Britt show that John Fuller was born ca 1749 and died ca 1810, quite a difference from the records of both John Beattie Fuller and those on John W. Fuller's website. Mary Britt's DAR application also states that John Fuller served as a private under General Gates in the South Carolina militia. Furthermore, she lists that his place of death as Camden District, South Carolina. These significant differences need to be resolved. Additionally, this John Fuller is said to be a son of John Fuller, Sr, (1704-1810) and grandson of Ezekiel Fuller (1675-1722) of Isle of Wight, Virginia. However, this has not yet been satisfactorily verified.
John Fuller and his wife, Mary, were both born in Georgia, as were their two oldest sons, James and John. They moved to Arkansas sometime before 1860, and can be found on the 1860 Columbia County census (P#435, Dwelling 321, Family 323). John is shown as a Farmer, owning $1,200 in real estate and $550 in personal property.
In the book "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records" by Edna McDaniel White and Blanche Finley Toole, there is a picture of John and Mary Fuller. John is shown in uniform, with a long rifle. Private John B. Fuller is shown as a member of the 26th Arkansas Infantry, Capt. Hamiter's Company G. He enlisted on May 22, 1862 in Lewisville, Arkansas for a period of 3 years. The muster roll's show him present through April 30, 1863. In June, 1863, he was inexplicably dropped from the roll by order of Lt. Genl Holmes. However, he was shown as present on the muster rolls for December 31, 1863 through February 29, 1864. His name appears on a ROLL OF PRISONERS OF WAR of furloughed and detailed men, Confederate States Army, surrendered at New Orleans, LA, by General E.K. Smith, CSA to Maj. Gen. R.S. Canby, USA, May 26, 1865 and paroled at Shreveport, LA June 20, 1865. The roll was dated Shreveport, LA, June 20, 1865. His residence was shown as Columbia County, Arkansas.
Organized as Morgan's Battalion on June 14, 1862, it was increased to a full regiment and reorganized as the 26th Arkansas Infantry on July 23, 1862, at DeValls Bluff, Arkansas. Asa Stokely Morgan, formerly of the famed 1st Arkansas Infantry Regiment, was appointed as lieutenant-colonel of the battalion, and was promoted to colonel when the 26th Arkansas was organized. The regiment was assigned to McRae's Brigade, Shoup's Division, First Corps, Army of the Trans-Mississippi, and fought at Prairie Grove and Devil's Backbone. Later, the regiment took part in the Red River Campaign, fighting at Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, on April 9, 1864. The 26th Arkansas was then ordered back to Arkansas to counter Union General Steele's Camden Expedition, culminating in the battle of Jenkins' Ferry on April 30, 1864. The regiment remained in south Arkansas for the next year, and was included in the general surrender of the Confederate forces in the Trans-Mississippi Department on May 26, 1865

The family moved to Sabine County, Texas shortly after the birth of their youngest son in Malvern, Arkansas in 1869. Linda Fuller of Cleveland, Texs located a deed dated 18 January 1870, showing the purchase of 174 acres of land lying in Sabine County out of the 611 acre survey made for William J. Sneed off the William Isaac's League. The witnesses to the deed were W.H. Crouch and S.D. Berley. It was recorded in San Augustine County. The price was one dollar an acre, for a total of $174. John died less than six weeks after this purchase, on March 6, 1870.
Mary herself died in 1874, leaving her children orphaned. The eldest sons, James and John, ages 18 and 17, took charge of the family. On the 1880 census, John is shown as head of household. Also living with him and three of his younger siblings is 50 year old Nancy Howard, listed as a family member. His older brother, James, was shown as living on a nearby farm with his wife, mother in law and year old daughter. Brother Delony was also living nearby, working as a laborer on the farm of Christopher "Kit" and Mary Smith. Kit Smith was later killed by the Conner's in the infamous Smith-Conner-Low feud in the mid 1880s in Sabine County.
Blanche Finley Toole of Sabine County writes that Nancy Howard, the family member shown living in the John W Fuller household in 1880, was related her great great grandmother, Ruth Howard Finley. Her father was Samuel Howard. She came to Texas around 1875. Nancy Howard's fiancee was killed in the Civil War, and she never married. She was buried with her pictures of him and her bible. Ms. Toole says that Nancy Howard can be found on the 1850 Meriwether GA census in Household #799, Nancy Howard, age 23, female, born Georgia, in the household of Malichi Murphy age 48, born South Carolina and wife Nancy, age 52 b. South Carolina. (Letter to Melinda Strong, date 5 June 1997).
The parentage of John Brooks Fuller has not yet been proved conclusively. It is appears that he is the son of James Anderson Fuller, however there are some inconsistencies. The family of James Anderson Fuller resided in Meriwether County, Georgia, as did Nancy Howard. As indicated on the census records extracted above, John Brooks Fuller was born circa 1834 in Georgia. The census records of the James Anderson Fuller family indicate that their son, John B., was born in Georgia circa 1831. From the ages of their children, it appears that John and Mary Fuller were probably married sometime before 1855 in Georgia. This fits with the information from the Fuller Genealogical Bank, showing that James's son John B. Fuller married a Mary Watson on November 5, 1852. This also fits with the facts shown on the death certificates for two of the Fuller's children, Joseph Thomas Fuller and Francis Ola Fuller Burkhalter. Both certificates show their mother's maiden name as Watson. However, in the book SABINE COUNTY HISTORICAL SKETCHES AND GENEALOGICAL RECORDS, the mother of the Fuller Children is listed as Mary Brown. No support is provided for the Brown name, however. The most important contradiction, one that must be resolved, is that the Fuller Genealogical Data Banks show that John B. Fuller died on November 5, 1862 (probably during the Civil War). Our John Brooks Fuller did not die until early in 1870, in Sabine County.
Only a death date is shown on his headstone. He shares a double marker with Mary Fuller. This is also engraved with "Precious Memories."

The following article appeared in the March 13, 1996 SABINE COUNTY RECORDER:
Sabine County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting activities March 20 honoring Martha Fuller Turner of Houston, who grew up in Sabine County.
Since 1981, she has operated Martha Turner Properties, one of the most successful real estate firms in Houston. A graduate of North Texas State University, she taught elementary school for 15 years before making her career change.
When Martha Turner Properties began, it was described that the entire company was three workaholics crammed into a borrowed Galleria office space.
In addition to her outstanding career, she also finds time form such diverse interests as her board positions with Texas Commerce Bank, Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the Houston Association of Realtors as well as chairing gala fundraisers including Crohn's and Colitis Winter Ball, Houston Ballet Guild 50th Anniversary Luncheon, and the "Trees of Hope" to benefit Star of Hope Mission. There are many other civic, charitable, and professional organizations in which Turner is a vital worker.
Turner was named Woman of Distinction by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation and KTRK-TV in 1991 and 1996. She has also received the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation's Gold Key award.
A lengthier article was published in the August 26, 2009 Sabine County Reporter on the occasion of her upcoming induction into the Texas Business Hall of Fame. She was one of only seven women ever to have received this prestigious honor.
Mary Howell wrote the following, for her column "On the Bright Side" honoring Martha for the October 12, 2009 issue of the Sabine County Reporter:
Martha Fuller Turner, a native of Sabine County, has been selected for induction into the Texas Business Hall of Fame. She will be honored during the annual induction dinner October 15, 2009 in Houston.
Martha is President and CEO of Martha Turner Properties, a billion dollar Houston based independent real estate company. Martha attributes her success in life to her upbringing in Hemphill. She has fond memories of her childhood days and of attending Hemphill School where she graduated in 1958.
Martha learned the fundamentals of business from her parents and grandparents, Deas and Lucille and Tom and Sallie who owned and operated Fuller's Dry Goods and Feed Store. She began working in the store when she was six years old. It was her duty to refold shirts, pants and overalls after customers browsed through them. She also wrapped packages and gifts.
Martha has fond memories of attending Hemphill's First Baptist Church where she participated in all church activities. Among her mentors were her pastor, Bro. Clarence Howell and her teachers who always encouraged her to be the best she could be.
I cherish many happy times shared with Martha when she and her friends Charlsia Rice and Sammy Kay Smith visited my sister Clara. The four were fast friends and enjoyed many happy hours at the Howell house.
After Martha graduated from high school she attended North Texas State University earning a degree in music and elementary education. She later taught school in Austin. After retiring from teaching in 1979 she earned her real estate license.
Under Martha's leadership, Martha Turner Properties has flourished into a billion dollar business. Martha encourages her employees to achieve excellence, believe in yourself, be open to opportunities, accept life changes, learn to forgive and be thankful for God's blessings.
Her friend, Clara Murphy said "If you looked up the word 'optimism' in the dictionary you would see Martha's picture!"
She is often called upon to give motivational speeches in various places across the United States. She is active in numerous charitable organizations.
Martha enjoyed visiting with friends during the reunion of the class of 1958 which was held Saturday at the Bistro in Hemphill.
Houston Mayor Bill White has proclaimed October 24 Martha Fuller Turner Day. " I extend my congratulations to Martha for her success in life. I am blessed to call Martha Turner my friend."
Death Notice, Houston Chronicle, April 8, 2022
Martha Turner, who built a residential real estate empire in Houston, died Friday at the age of 81, her firm, Martha Turner Sotheby's International Realty, said.
Considered a matriarch of Houston real estate, Turner rose to build a sprawling real estate agency that was closing more than $2 billion in real estate transactions a year before it was acquired in 2014 by New York-based Sotheby's International Realty. Turner and her co-president Tom Anderson stepped away from running the day-to-day business operations in 2015, but they held chairman emeritus roles. Today the firm has 290 real estate agents.
"We are heartbroken over Martha's passing," the company said in a statement. "She was a deeply respected leader in the Houston real estate community and an inspiration, friend, and mentor to us all," the company said in a statement.
The cause of her death was not immediately available.
Born June 24, 1940, Turner grew up in the small East Texas town of Hemphill before graduating from the University of North Texas in 1962, according to a 2016 profile in Intown Houston Magazine. After a 15-year career teaching, she turned to real estate in the late 1970s, when she studied at the University of Houston and received her real estate license, the magazine reported.
By 1981, Turner partnered with her friend Nancy Owens to launch Turner-Owens Real Estate. Five years later, the company became Martha Turner Properties.
Over the years, Turner built the brokerage into a thriving luxury real estate business. In 2009, Turner was inducted into Texas Business Hall of Fame as one of only seven women to have received the award at the time. She also became the first woman to be honored with the American Advertising Federation-Houston's Trailblazer Award in 2012.
Following the acquisition by Sotheby's, Turner pledged to help steer the company's future through continued involvement in business development, sales and marketing. She also continued to be a mentor for other real estate professionals.
"To be successful, you have to love what you do, love the people around you, make everyone feel special, and realize that you are the only person in charge of your life," Turner once told colleagues at Sotheby's.
Among those mentored by Turner was Bob Hale, CEO of Houston Association of Realtors.
It is hard to imagine a world without Martha Turner - a giant in the real estate industry and a model of success for businesswomen everywhere, Hale said in a statement. "Martha helped shape the industry and exemplified strength, poise and professionalism. She was a pioneer."
Jennifer Wauhob, the chair of the Houston Association of Realtors, described Turner as "a towering figure who served as a role model to countless real estate professionals."
Lisa Baer, a realty agent with Martha Turner for nearly 35 years, said Turner was down-to-earth with a strong sense of faith. Baer said she inspired everyone around her.
"She wanted everybody to be their best and to have their best," Baer said. "She was very motivational, inspirational, positive."
Turner's first husband, Keith, died in 1986, and she remarried a few years later to Glenn Bauguss, according to earlier media reports. She had a daughter and a grandson as of 2016, along with several stepchildren and grandchildren, according to earlier media reports.
Marilyn Thompson, who retired a year ago as president of Martha Turner Sotheby's International after working there 31 years, said Turner provided an example to other women seeking a professional career. Turner never asked her agents to do anything that she would not do herself, Thompson recalled. If it required getting down on the floor to piece together a sales presentation for a home, Turner would get down on the floor.
"She was always impeccably dressed and very professional in everything she did," Thompson said. "She opened the doors for women to make a good living."
Thompson described Turner as natural salesperson with a genius for marketing. Before real estate, she sold everything from encyclopedias to wigs to women's underwear. Thompson said she would laugh whenever Turner recalled her days as the top women's underwear salesperson at Montgomery Ward.
After selling one pair, she'd tell the customer, "You really need 7. Don't you wear a clean pair every day?"
"So, she'd sell 7 pairs," Thompson said.
Former business partner Tom Anderson said it was easy to work with Turner, who had a warm, welcoming personality.
"We never had an argument in our 11 years," Anderson said. "We had some disagreements, but we were able to sit down and work it out without one unkind word."
The two formed a partnership in the early 2000s and grew the business by recruiting other professionals who shared their value of building and maintaining relationships with the community, he said. Turner was an active participant and generous donor to charities and encouraged her colleagues to give back, he said.
"It was about more than just sales and success," Anderson said. "It was about long-term relationship clients, customers and other real estate companies."
Anderson said he visited with Turner about a month ago, before she went into hospice care. Her daughter had done her makeup that day.
"I held her hand and said a prayer. She was just beautiful," Anderson said, his voice cracking. "That's how I'll always remember her."
A briefer obituary was published in The Sabine County Reporter, April 13, 2022, page 8
Michael was born when his father was stationed at Ellington AFB in Houston, where he served as a Liason Advisor working with the Reserve Air Crews. This group also moved cargo for the armed services throughout the US and South America.
Michael excelled in sports and hoped to become a coach after finishing college. He enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 18, and planned to attend college with the G.I. Bill after completing his term of service. He played on several base teams, and at Kelly AFB played softball, basketball, and football. Michael's death came without warning, following a base softbally game. He had not been sick, and at 6'2' and 180 lbs. he was the picture of health. After his death, the Baker Flight team dedicated its season to his memory, and all players wore his number on their shoulder. There was standing room only at the Rosevine Church of God for his memorial service, some of his military friends came from as far away as Idaho.
A Mike Fuller Memorial Fund was established in San Augustine to raise money for the local little league, and the ball field where Mike played his last game was named the "Mike Fuller Memorial Field."
Mildred Alyne Fuller Toner,86, our beloved Mother, passed away on Monday, February 7, 2011 at Baptist Orange Hospital in Orange, Texas. She peacefully departed this life with her devoted family by her side.
Mildred was born in Rosevine, Texas on January 12, 1925 she was the eldest child of James Herman Fuller and Ruthie Mae McCroskey.
Mildred grew up in Sabine County and graduated from Rosevine High School as Valedictorian. In order to attend Texas Women's University in the fall she also continued for six more weeks of instruction at Pineland High School and graduated from there as well. After a year of attending college at Denton, TX, Mildred transferred to Stephen F. Austin and continued college to become an educator. Unfortunately, World War II began and Mildred was needed to teach school at Brooklyn High School because many teachers were drafted.
Mildred left there, as many young women did, and joined the war effort by moving to Dallas to work in an aircraft factory and later to Beaumont to work at Bethlehem Steel. During the intervening war years she met her sweetheart, Francis James (Buddy) Toner in Beaumont, Texas, while working in the office at the port. Following the war, Mildred joined Buddy in Indianapolis , Indiana where he was attending Butler University and they were united in marriage. She became a part of an extended and loving Irish family. Buddy transferred to Texas A & M University where he would study to become a mechanical engineer. They left College Station to live in Beaumont, TX where in the early years of her marriage Mildred would quit her teaching job at Chenier Business College to become a fulltime mom. Mildred and Buddy would travel the United States as he worked for various companies as an engineer and plant manager. Finally ending up back in Orange, Texas they bought a home and enjoyed raising and educating their five children. As her children all entered school, not one to be idle, she held various jobs working in the offices at Sears, JC Penney and her son-in-law Michael Mazzola's Insurance office.
Always a lover of knowledge, when her oldest children began college she again felt an urge for higher education and attended Lamar University. She also felt it was very important to give back to the communities in which she lived and was a member of the Red Cross as a Gray Lady at Orange Memorial Hospital and a lifetime member of the PTA supporting teachers and education.
Mildred was a member of the Church of God her entire life, a devoted Christian, who participated fully at the churches in Orange and Rosevine (in later years) holding secretarial and Sunday school leader positions. After the death of her husband she built a home in Rosevine on the land where she was born. While living in Rosevine she worked as an Avon saleslady who achieved the Silver Circle Status within the company.
During her years in Orange and Rosevine she was always there to help care for and cheer on her children and grandchildren assisting her family in every way possible. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Francis James Toner, two sisters: Narvalyn Ellison, and Ola Jean Ford, four bothers: Conrad Fuller, Bobby Joe Fuller, and David Fuller and Kenneth Fuller. Those left to survive Mildred are her children: John Brendan Toner (Melaine) of Rosevine, Kathleen Ruth Toner Mazzola (Michael), Mary Camille Toner Fuller (Preston) and Frances Patrice Toner Lewis (Eddie) of Orange and Ramona Jean Toner Darnley (John) of The Woodlands. Also surviving are three brothers: Roland Fuller (Betty) of Nacogdoches, Herman Fuller (Jr.)(Charlene) of Rosevine, and Francis Dwain Fuller (Oquilla) of Houston. She is also survived by her beloved Uncle Ray McCroskey (Cortez) of Sarepta, LA.
Mildred leaves behind her 16 beloved grandchildren: Jack, Hunter, Shane, Chad, Rebel, Brendan, Amy, Amber, Jennifer, April, Patrice, Michael, Nick, Alex ,Tara, and Frank, and her 17 adorable great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, February 12 at 2:00 PM at Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill, TX. The family will be receiving friends from 10 AM until the funeral begins. Interment will follow in Rosevine Cemetery.

Nina Fuller was a striking woman. She was nearly six feet tall and slender. When she unwound her hair from the bun she usually wore, it cascaded down her back almost to her feet. She enjoyed gardening and quilting, growing most of her own vegetables. She was a thrifty woman. She continued to make her own soap from lye, pine rosin and "fat cracklings" even when she could just as easily purchased a bar at the store.
Being the oldest daughter, Nina helped her mother daily with the household chores. She remembers that when she was quite young, her parents went to the State Fair in Dallas by horse and buggy. They came home with a washboard and a box of packaged laundry soap. Nina claims they were the first family in Sabine County to have a washboard, and remembers neighbors coming by on wash day just to see how it worked. The 1940 census indicates she had attended school for six years.
She was a staunch member of the Rosevine Church of God. She truly believed in doing good works, and never turned away anyone in need. Her son Tom remembers that their home was on the "hobo circuit" during the depression. He often passed men asleep on a spare mattress in their garage on his way to school. She fed everyone who came to their door hungry, and made regular visits to the local nursing home to take food to friends and relatives.
Nina Sue Wade, who was a backdoor neighbor to the McLemore family when they lived in town, recalls that her mother relied on her more experienced neighbors parenting advice. The Wade family had several young children, mainly very active boys, with Nina being the oldest. Mrs. Wade worked hard to keep her rambunctious children in line, to no avail. Mrs. McLemore advised her to ignore the minor infractions. Nina Sue recalled her mother often quoting a saying Mrs. McLemore told her, "When your children are young, they step on your shoestrings. When they get older, they step on your heartstrings." She would go on to advise her to cherish her children while they were young and full of spirit, because she would miss them sorely when they were grown and on their own.
After her husband died, Nina McLemore remained an independant woman, living alone in a house her brother Lonzo built for her after her husband died. She lived next door to her son Percy, and her grandson's Dental Office was directly behind her home. She was able to live at home and care for herself until she was in her mid 80's, when she went to live with her daughter Evon.

According to the book "A Pictorial History of Sabine County, Texas," Ola Jean was a member of the Bronson High School girls basketball team from 1949 to 1952, as well as being a member of the Future Homemakers of America.

On her birth certificate, her middle name was listed as Mary. However, her death certificate shows Mae as her middle name. Daughter Joye indicated that Mary was correct.
It appears from the book "A Pictorial History of Sabine County, Texas, " that Deas Fuller was active in community events. He is shown participating in the Western Day parade and as part of the Hemphill Volunteer Fire Department. It also appears he operated a feed store.
In the December 28, 1994 "Year In Review" column in the Sabine County Reporter, it is noted that in April "Longtime Hemphill resident and business/civic leader Deas Fuller died at age 76."
In the books "Old Timers of Sabine County, Texas Vignettes of Pioneer Families" by Virgie Speights (S. Malone, 1983), the following vignette appears:
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Graydon (Tom) Fuller celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, Sunday, February 20, 1966, at their home with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m.. Hostesses were their daughter-in-law, Mrs. Deas Fuller, their niece, Mrs. L.A. Adiches, and Miss Gertrude Sanders.
Mrs. J.O. Porter, Miss Sherry Lewis, Miss Amanda Gooch and Miss Nancy McClelland served golden iced wedding cakd and gold punch and conducted guests through the gift display rooms. Their grandson, Tommy Fuller, registered the guests as they arrived.
When Thomas Graydon Fuller, son of James Estern (sic) and Hannah Pickney Deweese Fuller, and Miss Sallie Mason, daughter of William Crockett and Josephine Deas Mason, of San Augustine, were married at the home of the bride's parents they moved into the house where Tom was born and lived all of his life. He has been in business in Hemphill for forty years.
The Fullers have one son, Thomas Deas Fuller, who is in business with his father and lives across the street from his parents, in a home once owned by Dr. and Mrs. W.T. Arnold and family. Mrs. Arnold was formerly Miss Pearl Fuller, sister of Tom.
There is one grandson, Tommy Fuller of Hemphill, and one granddaughter, Mrs. Martha Turner of Austin.
According to "A Pictorial History of Sabine County, Texas", the home of Tom and Sally Mason Fuller was believed to have been built during the 1870's by Allen Beckcom.
In her weekly Sabine County Reporter column, "On the Bright Side", Mary Howell wrote that she remembered "Tom ran a clothing and feed store next to the drug store [which his brother Jim Fuller owned and operated]....Deas kept the store open after his parents deaths." (Page 4, July 18, 2007).
