Arcadia was the eldest child of George Bowman DOUGHARTY and Maud LEWIS, and was named for her father's only sister, Arcadia Dougharty Herrin.
Ruby Boyett Burkett relates that in a letter her mother had written after her children were all grown and in homes of their own, Arcadia stated "the happiest days of my life was when my children were around my feet."
Rubye Burkett writes that he was a surveyor by trade, and moved to Texas in 1843. He was the first county clerk of Newton county. One of his first duties was to mark the line between Jasper and Newton counties, as will as furnish a table and chairs for the county court. He married thied Harriet Poole Hall, widow of Britt Hall, and she died soon after their marriage.
In May of 1855, George, now 70 years of age, and his son Charles Bowman were hauling logs on an ox cart, near the "Wilson Woods place". George had stopped to open a gate and was gored by one of the oxen. His eleven year old son, Charles Bowman, pulled enough logs from the wagon to cover his father and ran for help but George was mortally wounded and there was nothing they could do.
The inventory of his estate included his surveying tools and maps, four boxes of books, including "Josephus and Cisero." George also taught school, was a member of the State Legislature and a farmer.
After George's tragic death, Joseph Marshall and Charles Bowman were found living with their half sister, Hester Ann, who was married to Asa Lafitte Stark. The whereabouts of Amanda Catherine and Julia Cassandra at that time are unknown. They may have already been married.

Written in response to an article about US 69 in Lumberton about a TxDOT project to construct a shoulder on a two lane highway
"In the early 1970s, I had the privilege of serving as the president of the Beaumont Salvation Army board. Also serving at that time were several astute community business men - Peter Wells , Ed Collins , Wes Callaway and Marcus Dougharty. We wanted to do everything and anything to improve the Boy's Club gym on Sabine Pass, which would require replacing it. Marcus Dougharty, our treasurer, and a banker by profession, said, "You can't do that."
"Why not?" we asked. "Because you do not have the money, and when your outgo is more than your income, your upkeep will be your downfall," he replied.
So we replaced some rotted timbers, shoveled up the old asphalt floor with shovels borrowed from the H.G. Nichols Co. and replaced the old floor.
So when we look at our economy remember the words of Marcus Dougharty, it still is as simple as that!"

Reply from Linda King Davenport
The Index to the Cemeteries of Sabine County Texas 1836 - 1964 copyrighted by J. B. Sanders 1964 states the burial place as Conner Cemetery with 5 unmarked graves. To quote: "Conner, Percy 15 Mar 1824 - 22 Oct 1898" I don't know if "Percy" was misspelled in Mr. Sanders' book or on the tombstone. This is not my line and I have not researched this at all. Happy hunting!
Ron McClendon noted that he is not sure of the second marriage.
She was the daughter of Frederick Douglas.
FindAGrave shows that "Piercey was the daughter of Frederick Douglas and wife, Bethamy Hannah Anderson Douglas. She was born with twin sister, Tiercey Douglas. Married Willis William Jackson Conner on 1 Aug 1844 in Tattnall County, Georgia."
The exact date of Anthony's arrival to this country is not known, but it is known that he applied for his U.S. citizenship at Red Oak, Montgomery County, Iowa on December 8, 1870. The family moved to Saline County, Nebraska, and on May 4, 1871, Anthony registered an application for a homestead. His land was the s 1/2 NW 1/4, section 30, Turkey Creek Township. He "built a house of sod thereon, 12 x 14 feet in size with two windows and one door...plowed and cultivated about 40 acres of said land and...bored a well 48 feet deep, built a stable of straw and poles and planted a small grove of forest trees. (Milligan, p 261).
She came to America at age 6. Her family originally settled in Red Oak, Iowa and then moved to a farm near Crete. Her parents died of the flu shortly after her marriage, and she raised her younger brothers and sisters. After her husband's death, she managed their farm for over 20 more years, with the help of her children. She lived in a sod hut, killed the snakes first thing in the morning and had a dog that actually removed cockleburs from her skirt in the evening. (Milligan, p 211).

They farmed near Exeter for 45 years. After Anna's death, Robert moved to Geneva where he operated a repair shop. He was a very innovative person. Long before others on the farm had electricity he had rows of batteries and an electric engine in hais basement to provide electricity in his home. Also, he had one of the biggest steam threshing rigs around, a Case. He was the first have an automobile in Saline County. Jan Doupnik 3 July 1855 - 11 March 1932, of Thurston, Nebraska used to visit Robert Doupnik and family. The exact relationship is not known, perhaps they were cousins. (Milligan, p 262).
He married Hazel York and had one son, William Doupnik, Jr. (Milligan, p 262).
It is possible that he was actually William Jennings Doupnik, and named after the congressman and presidential candidate, William Jennings Bryan, of Nebraska
John W. Clark shows that she can be found with her parents and siblings on the 1880 census of Erath County, Texas. Her father was born in 1826 in Florida, and she was the first of five children listed on the census.

Shown on the transcription of the San Augustine City Cemetery as a daughter of Capt. Edward Dennis DOWN and Susan O. TROTTI. Newton County Historical Committee, "Glimpses of Newton County History," (Nortex Press, Burnet, Texas, c. 1982) notes that E. D. Downs was a colorful figure in Newton County affairs, from Talbottom, Georgia. He served as County Commissioner, sheriff and tax collector. He was said to have been one of the best sherrifs in East Texas. He went into the logging business with Ed Ellington and T. J. Trotti, and they sold out to Kirby Lumber Company in 1901, at which time moved to San Augustine and engaged in the mercantile and banking business with his son-in-law, John D. Clark.

Her maiden name appears to be DOYLE, as a memorial for Inda Doyle Hobbs, date of death 16 May 1919, can be found in the IOOF Cemetery in Greenwood, Leflore, Mississippi. No date of birth is listed. As she shares a double marker with her second husband, this appears to be for the same Inda who was first married to Abraham Geren McLemore.
Her obituary, below, was copied from her FindAGrave memorial page, created by Jackie M. Isham, Sr:

Dorothy married the love of her life, John Stephen Woodruff and lived in Houston, Texas from 1977 until her death. John and Dorothy were married 41 years on December 10, 2018.
She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and loved to be out in nature observing God's creation. She attended the Living Church of God in Cypress, Texas and loved her church family. Nobody had to ask Dorothy about her walk with God '96 it was evident in the way she lived her life.
An elder sister, Rosa Louise; a niece, Priscilla Sharpton, and her parents, "Jr" and Audrey Drawhorn, preceded her in death.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, John; sister Naomi, Sharpton, sister Glenda Walker, sister Gail Edgar and husband Raymond, sister Eva Weeks and husband James; sister Juanita Ward and Ronnie; several nieces and nephews; beloved aunts and uncles, and cousins.

Crematory services are under the direction of Wyman Roberts Funeral Home.
A special thank you for all the prayers and to Dr. Kanaan (oncologist) and his staff; Cathryn Brown, PA; Dr. Lilit Sargsyan, Dr. Jung, nurse Neal, and other medical staff of Memorial Hermann and St. Lukes Hospitals as well as the team of Harbor Hospice (namely Chioma) who provided excellent care for our sister, friend, neighbor and wife.
Donations can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society @ LLS.org or to a charity of your choosing in Dorothy's honor. Dorothy loved nature so Sierra Club, Texas Conservation Alliance, Audubon Society are certainly worthy causes and she would be appreciative.
