Her obituary below was copied from her FindAGrave memorial page, created by Carolyn Bair:
Anna Mae McGown, 86, died Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at Calder Woods in Beaumont, Texas. She was born August 23, 1920 in Stowell, Texas. She was a direct descendant of James Taylor White who first came to Texas in 1819. White's Ranch along the Gulf Coast of Southeast Texas is the oldest Anglo-owned ranch in the state. The ranch has been owned and managed for over six generations by descendants of James Taylor White.
Anne grew up in Stowell, Texas; her father was a rancher in Chambers County. Often her family would give teachers in Chambers County room and board. In the summer of 1936 her father brought home a "new comer" to Chambers County, a young man who had recently been transferred to work as a clerk for the Humble Oil Company. Since he had no place to live, her family took him in. He was Paul McGown. He soon became the most popular man around the house.
Anne attended Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas for two years and then transferred to Sam Houston University, from which she graduated in 1942. Anna and Paul married during Christmas vacation in 1941.
Before moving from Stowell, Anne and Paul were involved in beginning the construction of Winnie Stowell Methodist Church. Upon moving to Beaumont, they became active members of First United Methodist Church. When it was determined that Beaumont needed a new "west end" church, they helped organize and were charter members of Trinity United Methodist Church. Anna has been a member of Trinity for over fifty years.
During the years, Anne taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, chaired the Friendship Class Bazaar, worked on the Building Committee, Needlepoint Guild and served on the Trinity Day School Board. She was always there when the church called. Anne is probably best known for her fabulous cooking and her eagerness to share this talent with others. Whenever the church needed a cook, she was there. She was named Mother of the Year in 1999.
She has been a member of the Magnolia Garden Club and the Junior League of Beaumont, and she has served on the board of Buckner's Children's Village.
Anne dearly loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren all learned early in life that if they needed something they could call Gammy. She sat through hundreds of ball games, dance recitals and school plays.
Anne was preceded in death by her loving husband, Paul McGown. She is survived by three children, Mike McGown and his wife Lynn, Pat McGown and his wife D'Anne, and Mary Beth Messina and her husband Joseph all of Beaumont; six grandchildren, Mallory McGown of Houston, Michael McGown of London, England, Brent Messina of Houston, Greg Messina and his wife Ashley of Beaumont, Patrick McGown of Dallas, and Mark Messina of Houston; and four great grandchildren, Olivia McGown, Jay Paul Rauscher, Jordan Rauscher and Georgia Messina.
The family would like to thank Anne's caregivers, Myrtle Pickney and Thelma Stredic, as well as the employees of Calder Woods and Odyssey Healthcare of Beaumont.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 2, 2007 at Trinity United Methodist Church followed by burial at Forest Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of Broussard's, 2000 McFaddin, Beaumont. Michael McGown, Brent Messina, Greg Messina, Mark Messina, Patrick McGown, and Jay Paul Rauscher will be serving as pallbearers. Herb Hennington, Ed Thorpe, Frank Easley, Curtis DeMoss, John Jordan, and Ed Curtis will be serving as honorary pallbearers. A gathering of family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 1, 2007 at the mortuary.
Those wishing to make contributions may to so to Trinity United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 5247, Beaumont, Texas 77726.

Rachel Habig emailed, in February 2019, that she knew for a fact that her "2nd great grandmother was names Ary White, after Ary Felder Moore, Mary's aunt. Ary White had a twin sister named Elizabeth "Bessie" White. (My aunt is named "Ary Elizabeth" after them). Due to whatever circumstances, they weren't always in the same household growing up making it tough to research."
On the 1880 census, Ary and Bessie, both shown as age 3, where living with W. W. Moore and Ary A. Moore in Pike County, Mississippi. They were listed as Nieces of Ary Moore. Two of their cousins, also lived with WW and Ary Moore, 15 year old Ida Felder, and 7 year old WIll Gardner.
On the 1900 Federal Census enumeration, Bessie, age 23, as living with her parents in McComb, Mississippi. She was shown as being born in Jan 1877 in Mississippi.
In the next household, Ary Martin, the wife of Albert, was also shown as born in Jan 1877 in Mississippi. She and Albert had been married for one year.

Could Cade be a nickname for Cajabeth? Jack White emailed, in August, 2013, that he is descended from Cajabeth White, who was living in Bute Co, NC with his brother, William, as early as 1766. He had two sons, John and Robert. John White inherited land from a man named John Seagrove, whose will names John White as his nephew. It seems likely that Cajabeth's wife, Frances, was a Seagrove, but this is not proven.
The 1771 tax list for Bute Co shows that Young McLemore, who is part of your family tree, had an overseer named John Seagrove, who appears on a number of documents with members of the McLemore family before they migrated out of Bute (later Warren) Co. I have been trying for a couple of years to piece together precisely how the Seagrove, McLemore and White families may have interacted with one another, but the Seagrove family history is as complicated as that of the Whites.
The thing that interests me about your website is that Cajabeth White was frequently referred to in court documents as Cade, and I see in your website that two sons of Edward White (b. 1781 in Mecklenburg Co, VA) each had sons they named Cade.
In an article about Jack Causey from OLDTIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS, it is noted that he "attended a one-room school which was called Hickory Hill and was located a bit north of the J.B. Bohannon place. Teachers he remembers are Miss Lillie Speights, Miss Anna Watson (later Mrs. John Dent), Drew White, who married Miss Dora Speights, and Miss Nora Goodrich."
Charlie White reports he had spinal meningitis.

The September 20, 2006 "Sabine County Reporter" had a picture of the Milam, Texas, First Grade through High School--Spring 1927. A Drew White was pictured, but a grade was not indicated. The photo was submitted to the "Sabine County Reporter" by Robert E. "Ted" Finley of Van Nuys, California.
There is an Ed White in Pike County, Mississippi in 1820. This may or may not be the same Edward White that is located in Amite County, Mississippi 10 years later. The family composition is 3 males under the age of 10, 1 male between 10-16, two males between 26 and 45, two females under the age of 10, and one female age 26 to 45.
On the 1830 Amite County, Mississippi census, Edward White and wife had 3 boys & 3 girls, 0-9, 1 boy and 1 girl 10-19. He was between the ages of 40 to 60 and his wife was between 20 and 40.
He was still in Amite County in 1840, on page 52. The microfilm at the San Antonio Public Library was faded and difficult to read. It appeared to show the following, however< Edward White Males 1-0-2-0-0-0-0-1 Females0-2-0-2-0-0-1-0 He appears to have held at least two female slaves, one under the age of five, and the other between five and ten. The number of male slaves is difficult to read. It is probably just one.
Edward White, his wife Elizabeth, and several of his children can be found in Amite County, Mississippi on the 1850 census as well. Sometime after this enumeration, they moved to Sabine County, Texas.
In White and Toole's book, Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records it was noted hat "Later that year (ca. 1843-sic), the Edward White family...and many of their friends and relatives came to Sabine County. Some forty or fifty covered wagons, some of them drawn by oxen, travelled together." From "Sabine County Historical Sketches And Genealogical Records."
Edward White is shown on various internet trees, most unsourced, as either the son of William White and Mary Matilda Mason of Mecklenberg, Virginia or as the son of Edward White and Pembrook Singleton of Kingston Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia. In neither case has documentary evidence been shown. Mildred Bell Landers emailed that she had "heard from a ggg grandson of Edward White (through his daughter who married Cannon Travis), and he asked if I had ever heard that Edward was an Indian named Whitecloud or Whitefeather, like his father, William. I had never heard this, and in Sabine County the past is closer than elsewhere. Nor had I heard that Edward White's father was William. One of my other gg grandfathers was part Indian, and this seems to be known in Sabine County, at least by descendants. Ever heard of any of this? There was a picture of an Edward White, Civil War veteran, in an issue of the Sabine County Reporter (maybe a son or grandson) and he did not appear to be part Indian. In my mother's family, some of them had characteristics that could be considered Indian."
Jack Hutchins White emailed, in August 2013, that his White ancestor was "Cajabeth White, who was living in Bute Co, NC with his brother, William, as early as 1766. He had two sons, John and Robert. John White inherited land from a man named John Seagrove, whose will names John White as his nephew. It seems likely that Cajabeth's wife, Frances, was a Seagrove, but this is not proven. The 1771 tax list for Bute Co shows that Young McLemore....had an overseer named John Seagrove, who appears on a number of documents with members of the McLemore family before they migrated out of Bute (later Warren) Co.
I believe it is likely that the Edward White in your website is the son of William White Sr. of Mecklenburg Co, VA. The personal property tax lists for that county show a son of William named Edward who is first listed as a taxable adult in the household of his father in 1797 and as head of his own household in 1800. He is gone from the county by 1801.
I am researching the possibility that William White Sr. was the brother of Cajabeth "Cade" White named in the 1766 tax rolls for Bute Co. The fact that the name Cade appears twice among the grandchildren of Edward White seems to support this theory.
I am still a bit fuzzy on when this White line intermarries with the Strong and McLemore families. I am hoping one of your family researchers would be willing to collaborate with me on the foregoing topics. I have copied Lisa Lisson, a White family descendant, who is assisting in this research."

On the 1860 Sabine County, Texas census, Edward and Elizabeth (age 79 and 66) were living with 11 year old L.E. White, a female born in Texas. Edward's real property was valued at $500 and he had personal property valued at $7,943. I speculate that L.E. White might actually be M.E. White, Mary Elizabeth Sophronia White, the oldest daughter of James and Drucilla White. James died prior to 1860, and his wife remarried John C. Partin. James and Drucilla's two younger daughters are listed with Drucilla and her new husband, but their oldest daughter, born circa 1848/1849, has disappeared. It could be that this oldest daughter died. Or it could be that the oldest daughter went to live with and/or care for her elderly grandparents. Additionally, the 11 year old L.E. White does not seem to fit into any other of the White families shown on the 1850 census, nor can she be found after 1860.
Enrolled in the District 6 School in Sabine County in 1854.
Blanche Finley Toole wroted Melinda Strong, in September 2000, that Edward "ran away and joined to Civil War at age 14. He was a Bugle Boy." Mackie and Kay McCary's transcription of the Meador Cemetery shows that his gravesite was marked with "Co. G. Col. Bradford's Inf Brig. - CSA"

On the 1920 Sabine County census, she was living in the household of her son, John B. Walker in Precinct #1 of Sabine County, household #579/601. She was listed as a 67 year old widow.
Her son, Glenn McCroskey, married Nelda Miller. They had three children: Jeff, Scott and Kyle. Kay Parker McCary's transcription of the Gravel Hill Cemetery shows that she was first married to Lee Roy McCroskey and second to Col. Piram. In his autobiography, Robert Cecil McDaniel writes that while they were stationed in San Antonio, his sister-in-law, Evilee "lived with us for a year so so, and during that time, she worked for Frost National Bank. After we left San Antonio, she worked at Fort Sam Houston as a Federal Civil Service employee. Later, and when in her early fifties, she married a Colonel Piram, a widower, who was then stationed at Fourth Army Headquarters. They were later transferred to Fort Bliss, where he retired. During the late sixties, Colonel Piram died of a heart attack while on a fishing trip int he Rocky Mountains."

On the Sabine County 1854 Scholastic Census, H.S. White was shown as of household with five (5) children between the ages of 6 and 16 enrolled at School District No. 6. They were: Edward, Vardamenn, Mary, Hanibal, and Arrilla. Who was Arrilla, and who was her mother? Could this have been Hanzel, his daughter by Eliza Jones?
Henry S and Mary E White (third wife) were among the 11 founding members of the First Baptist Church of Hemphill, all of whom gathered on the banks of the Housen Bayou, drawing up 12 articles of Faith and 24 articles of Decorum. Henry served as the clerk to the church, recording all church proceedings for a period of some 12 years (from 1858 to 1870), as a delegate to church conferences, and as the moderator of church proceedings. In November, 1868, he was ordained as a Deacon of the Church. The MINUTES 1858-1890 FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH HEMPHILL, TEXAS were transcribed and indexed by Di Ann Vick in 1982, and are available for purchase from both Ingmire Publications, 10166 Clairmont Dr St. Louis MO 63136 and Ericson Books 1614 Redbud St Nacogdoches, Texas 75961.
In 1876, H S and Mary E White left the First Baptist Church and were among the founding members of the Antioch Baptist Church in the Gravel Hill Community of Sabine County. According to a plaque on the front of the Antioch Church, J. S. Lambert and J J Roundtree were the organizers. Other founding members included: George Conn, John Anderson, T.D. Burkhalter, John De Weese, L.W. Hoard, Hosie Baldree, Ann Mason, Sophie H. Wallace, Mrs. C.A. Hoard, C. Baldree
Per the book "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records" by White and Toole, "Henry S. White Sr. was Judge of Sabine County from 1869-1875, serving with Solomon Arthur. (They were called Chief Magistrates until the new State Constitution went into effect at the end of their term). Henry S. White was also a member of the Littleton Fowler Masonic Lodge. As the White Plantation lay just west of Hemphill, he was one of the last of the "Paderos" for the return of run-a-way slaves."
I have been unable to locate a CSA service record for Henry. It is probable that he was considered too old for service, he was almost 50 at the outbreak of the war.
His tombstone indicates he was a Mason.
Note in the 1920 Sabine County, Texas federal census, there was a 50 year old mulatto farmer named Jesse White (#594-616). He noted that his father was born in Mississippi and his mother in Georgia. What is his relationship, if any, to the other White's in Sabine County, Texas?

Presumably the trailblazer in the family. He was the only family member living in Sabine County in 1850. All the other family members migrated from Mississippi at a later date. His two oldest daughters were born in Louisiana circa 1848 and 1849, so he had not been in Texas long. His middle initial is sometimes shown as C and other times as E.

*Schluter and Toole, in their annotated transcription of the 1850 Sabine County, Texas census, show her as "dau of John and Mary Smith and widow of ---- Watkins." Scott Watkins points out that she is actually Mary Kemp Watkins, mother of Mary Morris and Drucilla White. A daughter of John and Mary Smith, namely Elizabeth, was married to Green Berry Watkins, thus causing the confusion.
Shown in Louisiana, Wills and Probate Records, 1775-1984, Succession File No. 2322-2380, 1914-1915, for Mary C. White, as one of eight surviving children of his parents, viz "J. Louie White---(resident) of Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana."
His Texas Death Certificate shows he was married and worked as a Building Contractor. No father was listed, and his mother was shown as Mary Cornelia ?. The informant was W.E. White, relationship not indicated. He had been a resident of Houston for 17 years prior to his death, thus arriving ca 1932.

According to her death certificate, filed by her daughter, Grace Schopf, she had lived in Everett for 13 years prior to her death (since approximately 1936), and although born in New Brunswick, Canada, she was a citizen of the U.S. The marriage register for Janet and Edwin show that Janet was born in St. John and a resident of St. John. Her parents were shown as Leslie and Elizabeth White. Her religion was listed as Baptist. (Courtesy of Cecelia Payne)
Katherine Friestat shows him as a son of John Franklin White. His date of birth and death is from her tree at the RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project. However, these can not be verified, on either the SSDI or in the Texas Death Index, so it is possible they are not accurate. They should be verified through an immediate family member, obituary, or official record. Friestat's online tree also shows that John David White was married several times, both prior to and after, his marriage to Mary Elizabeth Smith. He is said to be buried at Resthaven Cemetery. The "Lawrence-Clinton" tree on Ancestry.com also show his father as John Franklin White, and lists his mother as well, Mary Ann Reddell. The same DOB is listed, 14 Dec 1914 in Collin County, TX. The date of death, varies somewhat, showing 1 March 1993, but I am still unable to find him on the SSDI with that year of birth.
There is, however, a John D. White, born 14 Dec 1914 and died Mar 1992 on the SSDI. Additionally, the Texas Death index has a listing for a John White, date of death 13 Mar 1992, Dallas County, Texas.
According to the 1870 census, John H. White could not read or write, and suffered an "impairment." Charlie White notes that on the 1880 census, he is listed as married to a woman named Elizabeth, born circa 1857 in Arkansas. Five year old Lizzie Davis is shown as John's stepdaughter. On the 1900 census, it was also indicated that he could not read or write. He was living in the home of his younger half-brother, Henry Strickland White, Jr. It was also shown that he was divorced.
