The kirchlichen Familienregister Band 1 shows that she was confirmed in 1810, and was married in Schorndorf on 23 Nov 1817. The name of her spouse was not listed.
The kirchlichen Familienregister Band 1 shows that he was confirmed in 1802, and sometime after this "vanished" from the parish, perhaps understandably after this parents sordid deaths.
Shown as a "Mauermacher" (brickworker, masonry) on the marriage record of his son, Christian Binkelmann. Pl?derhausen parish registers show him as a son of Hans Jerg Benkelmann und Anna Barbara, geb. Wallter.
BonnieMargaret Jacobs writes that Jacob followed his father and grandfather into the trade of wannanmacher. She added that almost certainly the men of Pl?derhausen were farmers in addition to their trades, because trade alone was not large enough to support a man without land to grow his own food. BonnieMargaret noted that cabbage, millet, poppy, beets, clover and flax were all raised in the area (p. 53). BonnieMargaret also stated that the death record of Jacob showed his cause of death at the young age of 36 was attributable to 'delirium-fever.'
BonnieMargaret found records of Johann Jacob Benkelmann's death inventory in Pl?derhausen records. She explained that "upon death, every item belonging to the married couple was inventoried and the guilded artisans placed a monetary value on each thing owned by the parents. The property and inheritance of the wife would be deducted from the estate and the remainder would be divided equaily between the widow and living children. Since the widow would immediately receive possession of her own clothing, only the clothing of the deceased would be itemized"
Jacob's death inventory included the following property:
"one half of a two floor house and an additional building and yard under one roof, down in the lower part of the village besides Friedrich Bose and Christoph Gries", following the house there is a list of vineyards, meadows and garden. No cash is listed, but the couple owned one prayer book, one hand Bible and one hymnal. Furniture and household items consisted of: a bed, clothes wardrobe, hat box, milk box, trunks, child's bed, old trunk, hardwood table, two chairs, one footstool, bells and tools (household), garden tools, axe, field fork, scythe, one container of seed, foodstuffs (potatoes, etc), craftsman's tools, one pistol. His clothing consisted of one blue jacket, one waist cloth, one black pair leather pants, one pair deer leather pants, one hat, one blue chest cloth, one white cloth vest or jacket, one pair shoes. The inventory also itemized every kitchen tool, and the longest category in his inventory were the household linens, five pages in total of linens alone. The total inheritable property was valued at 1312 florins and 30 kreutze, and after re-listing all the property, the inventory specified who got what. It was signed by Eva and her curator, and by the curator of the children's interest. (p. 64).
In her 1981 unpublished manuscript, BonnieMargaret Jacobs writes that "Johann Jacob (III) grew up in Pl?derhausen with his sister and his cousins, but his father had died a year before the son would have begun his apprenticeship, thus he could not follow in his fathers trade as wannanmacher. He apparently apprenticed with his Uncle Christianius to become a weaver. When he was 20, perhaps in his wandering years as a journeyman, he met Maria Katharina Bauer, whose family had been citizens of Breech, in B?rtlingen parish, for several generations. There is, of course, no record of how the young couple felt about each other or what their intent was. But it was not long before they were faced with a difficult choice [because of Catharina's pregnancy]. Under the restrictive marriage laws of the time, it would have been economic suicide for young Jacob to marry Katharina, he would have had to forfeit his imminent promotion to master status. Katharina was pregant with no husband, and while her unfortunate situation was not unusual, it was still difficult. Though the illegitimacy rate in W?rttemberg was high, so was the infanticide rate. Many young women tried to hide their pregnancies and dispose of their children, but she did not. She would have been called before her pastor to explain the circumstances of her pregnancy and identify the father. In this case, both Katharina and Jacob acknowledged their relationship. In many other cases, that didn't happen and the child would bear his mother's surname. If the father was identified, and acknowledged his paternity, then the child would bear the name of his true father. (p. 56).
When he completed his World War I draft registration card, he showed his date of birth as December 26, 1894. He indicated he was born in Somerville, Texas, and that he was employed in Rebecca, Texas as a Farmer. He was single, of medium heigth, slender build, with blue eyes and dark hair.

Not listed with his family at the time of the 1880 Sabine County census. Did he die young? David Pike also indicates that a son named James was born ca 1869, but died before 1870.
Barbara Wright of Sabine County (email: leow@sabinenet.com) sent an excerpt from the minutes of the Little Flock Baptist Church, dated July 18, 1891. In these minutes, "The Church preferred a charge against brother Henry Birdwell for taking the life of his brother Jerry Brown. By motion and second the church with drew fellowship from Brother Henry Birdwell....DmM. Marshall, moderator, W.D. Cousins, C.C. "
Barbara emailed Melinda Strong on Saturday, July 6, 2002, that "The story is Henry Birdwell was a share crope and he was working for Brown. When the crops were ready to harvest, Brown went down in the field and told Henry that he was going to have to leave with nothing (in payment) for all of his work. Brown jumped on Henry. I am not sure what kind of a weapon that Brown had, but all Henry had was a hoe, and he killed him with a hoe, and was later cleared as it was self defense. My Aunt is 91 yr. old and this is what she said happened. And since it is in the Little Flock Church minutes, it must be true."
David Pike included the following excerpts about this family on his website:
"The Henry Birdwell family moved here from San Augustine to the Halfway House (AKA: Halfway Inn & Stagecoach Inn). They had three daughters; Clara, Christine and Mabel. Clara married a Mr. Collier and they moved to Houston and they had a sweet little girl named Lucille Collier. She grew up and was a very talented dancer. She and her mother moved to Hollywood, California, and Lucille got a role in a movie. The studio changed her name to Ann Miller. We have all seen her do some pretty fancy dancing in the movies. Ann came back to Chireno a few times to visit her grandparents after she became a movie star. Mr. Eric Green did some work on her car once while she was here visiting. Ann also visited the Chireno School while we were having a play and she came up on the stage for a few minutes."
p. 234, "Remembering Families No Longer In Chireno";
Birdwell, Henry and Alice;
The Birdwell's lived near downtown Chireno, where the Higginbothams live today. He owned a large farm west of Chireno where he engaged in large-scale farming. He and his wife had five sons, Phil, Link, Bertram, Richard and Cecil and three daughters, Clara, Mabel and Christine. They were also the grandparents of Ann Miller, the well-known Hollywood dancer and actress.

David Pike writes that James Birdwell arrived in Texas in 1854, and that he enlisted in Company "H", 13th Texas Regiment on the 18 Feb, 1862. Served in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. Was captured by Union Forces at Pleasant Hill, LA 9 Apr 1864, released in a prisoner exchange at Blair's Landing on the Red River, 20 Apr 1864. Discharged ca 5 May of 1865 at Hempstead, TX.
Henry, second child of J. A. and Mary's, was born 11 Nov 1864. This would indicate that James was home on leave in march of that year, just prior to the Battle of Pleasant Hill.
25 Jan 1906-made application (1st) for CSA pension. It was disapproved.
11 Aug 1909- made second application for pension. It was also disapproved.
He may have still owned land in Newton County. This may have been reason for these disapprovals. On his application he listed real and personal property as:
100 acres - $200.00
1 Pony - 45.00
2 Cows - 20.00
3 Shoats - 3.00
Wife's estate listed as her interest of the 100 acres.
David Pike also notes that "Family Search has James born in (Newton) Alabama. I do not believe this is correct. Also, some accounts have him and his bro. John as children of John and Mary Allen Birdwell. I believe this is also incorrect. "

The above referenced issue has an article about Ruby Birdwell, an 1943 graduate of San Augustine High School, who along with her husband Bill Murphy claimed a 160 acre homestead in Alaska. She was one of nine children of Florence and ENLO BIRDWELL, and the only one that left Texas.
Obituary
Anchorage Daily News
adn.com
Ruby B. Murphy, 86, died Sept. 17, 2010 at her home in Willow.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Willow. A service in Texas is planned at the Chinquapin Missionary Baptist Church in San Augustine at a later date. Her cremated remains will be inurned beside those of her husband at the Transport Cemetery in Dodson, La.
Ruby Blanche Birdwell was born Oct. 23, 1923 in San Augustine, Texas, the daughter of Enlow and Florence (Hardy) Birdwell. She received her education in San Augustine and began living in Skagway in 1952. In 1964, she and her husband, Bill, began living in Alaska on a full-time basis.
The family lovingly wrote: "Ruby, Mamma, Mema, Habba, Miss Ruby or Mrs. Murphy: no matter what name people had for her, anyone who ever met Ruby Murphy never forgot her."
Her adventurous, industrious character was evident in her experience homesteading on the Kashwitna River in the mid to late 1960s. While her husband, Bill, worked in Anchorage during the week, Ruby lived on the homestead, shooing away the moose from her garden and chasing away the bears from her fish. After moving into their larger log home in 1973, Ruby and Bill welcomed literally hundreds of visitors; from family and friends to fellow Al-Can Highway travelers they met during their many trips "Outside", to scores of church missionaries working on church building projects in Alaska.
Ruby never forgot her life tussling with her eight brothers and sisters on the farm in San Augustine, Texas, during the Great Depression and although she was homesteading on a wild river in Alaska, she always referred to San Augustine as "down home".
A pioneering fixture in the Willow community during her 46 years in the area, her engaging personality, love for people and incredible energy endured to the very end. Ruby always showed determination and an independent spirit. The feisty redhead went to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010.
