2009 I2311  Biba  Tomas  8 Dec 1831  4 Feb 1899  The Biba family came to the United States in 1873 from Zebnici, District of Plzen, Bohemia. In Bohemia, the Bibas were considered moderately wealthy. They traveled by horse and buggy rather than by oxen and cart. Their wealth was even counted by the number of fence posts. When they decided to come to America, they sold everything and came with $1,000 which at that time was a fortune. Tomas's father, Jan, accompanied them. They stopped in Braidwood, Illinois, south of Chicago, where Tomas worked in a coal mine. After a short time, they moved by train West where land to farm was available. They settled on land on Turkey Creek northwest of what later was to be Milligan. In March of 1874, the purchased the NW 1/4, Section 3, Glengary Township from the Burlington and Missouri Railroad for $902.44. The deed was recorded showing Barbora as the purchaser. Jack Noragon, a great-great grandson now owns the farm. The Bibas were very active in affairs of the area an helped start the first church in the area now located at the Ceski Bratri Cemetery. The life in Nebraska at the time was hard and primative. Most of the food was raised, and if you couldn't raise it, you bartered for it. Many articles, such as a Meissen pitcher that came from Europe and was used in the sod house and quilts made by the grandmothers, are prized possesions of the Biba descendants. The Bibas lived on the farm until Tomas died, at which time Barbora moved to a home in Milligan, later living with son Albert and his wife Josefa in Exeter until her death. (Milligan, pp 206 - 207).  STR06

2023 I35494  Bickham  Richard Baxter  Apr 1882  19 Dec 1970  Newton Historical Commission, Pauline Hines, Compiler "Newton County Nuggests: A Collection of True Stories By Newton County Folk" (Nortex Press, A Division of Eakin Publications, Inc, Austin, Texas, published in 1986), had an article about R. B. Bickham, reprinted from a newspaper article. He was a native of Angelina County and became a progressive leader in the Deweyville area about 1920. His wife, Sallie, was a native of Nacogdoches. Their only daughter is Maxine Bickham Davis. Bickham began his experience in the timber and lumber industry in early boyhood...and was one of the foremost profitable sawmill operators in the Newton County area. He favored progress and generously supported better roads, timber conservation, civic and religious improvements and good schools. He believed in giving a cordial welcome to desirable newcomers. He became a merchant in Deweyvill about 1945 along with his timber operations. On page 361 of the same book it was noted that Richard Bickham's business partner, Hager Davis, later became his son-in-law, and that they operated under contract with Kirby Lumber company. A flood in 1953 almost destroyed this mill, which did not completely shut down until 1954.

The Bickham's were the first residents of Deweyville to install a telephone. Mr. Bickham also built a movie theatre that he operated for three years, operating on Friday and Saturday evenings. (ibid, p. 397)

2052 I41637  Bickley  William W.  10 Nov 1846  29 Oct 1907  On the "Betts-Tuttle-Roedel-Lang" tree at RootsWeb, he is shown as a son of Simon Peter Bickley and Martha Ann Culver, and half-brother of John S. Bickley, born 1847. This does not appear to be correct, as William Buckley can not be located in the household of Simon Bickley and Harriet Culver in the 1850 through 1880 census. The "Ancestors of William Gene Bowman", also on RootsWeb, also shows William Washington Bickley, along with a twin brother, Wilson W. Bickely, as sons of Simon Peter Bickley and Martha Ann Culver, again married 27 Jan 1846. The also shows Simon married second Ann Elizabeth Biggs, not Harriett.

Wilson Bickley, 17 years, 3 months, Farmer b. Ga; and W. Bickley, 17 years, 3 months, farmer, b . Ga were listed on the 1864 Census for Re-Organizing The Georgia Militia. He was living in the 21st Ward, in the home of Elvin and Orpha Freeman, and incorrectly indexed as Paul BIEM. He was single at the time of both enumerations.

"Paul Bien, 60, former resident (Cass City) died April 27 (1955 penciled in) in Houston, Texas after two weeks illness caused by a heart attack. Mr. Bien left Detroit 25 years ago to make his home in Houston and is survived by his wife; two daughters; a step-son and two brothers, J. Stanley Bien of Lansing and Wm. January 8, 1886 Whittemore, Michigan

So many men that they commenced discharging 5 or 6 every day. They cut wages from $26 to $18-$20. Finally we got work up on the Au Sable River. I got in 24 days and then they put the damper on my winter job, so I came on down to this god forsaken palce Whittemore and stuck a tree camp and scored ties for seven days then had the good luck to cut my foot a very bad cut. Dr. says it should be healed in three more weeks.

April 8, 1886 Oscoda, Michigan

Everything is kind'o dull here, but things will be booming if the good weather keeps up. there was quite a lawsuit here about some fellows breaking into a house of ill fame and destroyed almost everything. There were about 15 in the scrape and six of them were sent to Tawas county jail awaiting trial at circuit court. They were a hard looking crew, but the girls got the start of 'em.

Mary Hicks, a grand niece of William Bien's ex-daughter-in-law, Helena Shaneyfelt Bien, emailed in July, 2010 that the "Bien / Biehn / Bean family was Mennonite. William H. Bien's father was David G. Obituary

Funeral services for Hank will be held on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Farmer & Son Funeral Home-Kotas Chapel in Milligan, Nebraska. Kim Dunker will officiate the service. Graveside services will follow the funeral in the Bohemian National Cemetery.
Visitation will begin on Monday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Kotas Chapel in Milligan. Memorials are directed to the family.

Henry Ramsdell Bigelow, of Milligan, Nebraska, passed away on October 26, 2012 at the Beatrice Community Hospital. He was 78 years old. He was born on July 23, 1934 in Bourne, Massachusetts to Victor Bigelow and Bernice Ramsdell Bigelow. He was baptized in the Baptist Church in Quincy, Massachusetts. After graduating from Dover High School in New Hampshire, he attended the University of New Hampshire, graduating with a degree in Nuclear Engineering. He served in the United States Air Force from 1952 - 1956.

While stationed in Lincoln, he met the love of his life, as well as the wind beneath his wings, Roma Buzek. He whisked her away to New Hampshire where he introduced her to his loving family, and of course, his love for seafood. Together, they wed and had four children: Julie, Laura, Beth, and Mark. He moved the family west in 1969 to the beautiful Napa Valley where they built a new home on the Napa River, equipped with a dock in the back yard where he proudly displayed his love of boating with a 31 foot Silverton dubbed "The Prowler." He enjoyed fishing, good friends, and he often stated, "Life was a party in those days."

Henry was a highly intelligent man. He often spent many nights after supper quizzing his children on spelling, math, science, and miscellaneous other topics, with the winners of the quizzes receiving ice cream at Foster Freeze.

Henry retired in 1989, and he and Roma moved to Florida where they bough a dream home and their dream boat, which they named "Abracadabra." They spent their time with good friends at the Hernando Beach Yacht Club, where Henry was very active, holding many Commanding Offices.
Henry also had a great love of woodworking, where he made all of his family many beautiful cherished heirlooms and was tenacious about completing these projects.

They came home to Milligan in 2005, to spend the remaining years of his life with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He enjoyed again the quiz games, as well as various sporting and other activities his family participated in.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents Victor & Bernice, and adored sister Joyce Kemp.
He is survived by his wife Roma; daughters and son-in-law Julie Pimentel, Laura & Dean Kassik, Beth Dunlap; son and daughter-in-law Mark & Becky Bigelow; 14 grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Merle & Betty Buzek and Kathy & Dick Rischling; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins

2089 I29876  Binkelman  Ervenia Mary  11 Nov 1874  17 Jan 1916  Monday, Jan. 17th 1916 occured the death of Ervenia Mary Huebotter at Tokio Texas from pnuemonia. She was the daughter of William and Mary Binkleman, pioneers of Marion. Ervenia was born Nov. 11th 1874 at Perry's Mill, Town of Dupont, now the Village of Marion. Jan. 11th, 1908 she married William D. Huebotter of Burnham, Texas. Only a few short years of wedded life and she was called, leaving a fond husband and three motherless boys.

Ervenia's early life was passed at Marion with her many friends and associates and was a general favorite. She became a member of the M.E. Church in her youth and in both Church and Sunday School was a devoted and constant worker. After completing High School in Marion, she attended the Normal at Oshkosh. From there she went to Valpariso, Ind., and graduated in the school of Expression. While at that college, she met her husband, a student in the department of law. Since their marriage, they have made their home in the state of Texas.

The sad news of her loss was a shock to the people of this vicinity, a week ago Monday, when told of her death. Her sister Luella, started upon notice of her illness, but reached Tokio only in time to accompany the husband, babies and remains of Ervenia to her old home. Tuesday, Jan, 25th 1916, the body of the departed was laid at rest in the Dupont Cemetery, by the side of a loved brother and sister.

Funeral services were held at the residence of her brother, Jay Binkleman, conducted by the Rev. W. Taylor, Pastor of the M.E. Church of Marion. Left of the family to mourn her absence are her husband and children, a father and mother, two sisters and one brother.

Pall Bearers: Paul Michaelis, Neal Case, E.E. Ramsdell, John Buhr, R. Churchill, John Laughlin.

2095 I29877  Binkelman  Lyndon Jay "Jay"  14 Apr 1880  Yes, date unknown  Jay, as we know him, was educated in the Marion schools, finishing up a business course at Racine. Was in business with his father until he sold to L. M. DeVaud & Co. Since then he remained in their emply until six months ago, he accepted a position with a Detroit house as travelling salesman, and two weeks since his family left for Port Huron, Mich. to make their future home. Muriel, the youngest daughter of the family, was born in this village April 14th 1884. She is with her parents in Oshkosh, the life and joy of the household. I have no wish or desire to flatter or give honor or respect where it is not due, but in this case, where I can write from a knowledge of what I am writing about I think it no flattery to say that for a family laboring under the conditions that this one did, all honor is due. That he was willing anxious to undertake any kind of labor to support his family he proved. He taught school at Belle Plaine two terms, cooked in the woods, purchased 10 acres of land on the town and county line road 1 1-2 miles west of the Marion Cemetery, and now owned by Wm. Anelam, moved his family there and was living there when we came in 1875. Here with no team, trying to clear up enough to get in a crop to keep them from starving, with his neighbor Aug. Dieck who had an ox team, they would exchange work, Binkelman driving the oxen, while Dieck with his two sons August and Jule would pile up the logs, fine maple logs worth now 40 dollars per thousand feet. Had to burn them up to make room to grow something to eat. That it was a struggle to live I can well believe. In 1876 he sold his farm to Wm. Anelam and came to the village and lived in a house located where Chas. Wiesman now lives and owned by Mrs. M. Timm. On the site or near it now occupied by Joseph Miller's grocery store, Binkelman and a man named Ritter, started a Hardware Store

At the time he completed his registration for the draft during World War I, his address was 291 King, Detroit, MI, and he was foreman at Dodge Bros (Badge 52501). He was 5'10', and weighed 165.
