Lt. Col. Grover (Berry) Clinton Berryman, 91, a longtime resident of Friday Harbor, Washington, passed away peacefully at home on July 10, 2015. He was born in Zavalla, Texas on October 23, 1923 to Bertie Meadows and Grover Cleveland Berryman. Relatives recalled that the first plane that many had ever seen circled the town on the day he was born.
Stirred by his interest in model planes and mechanics in general, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He trained as a pilot and was assigned to fly the B24 Liberator for the 5th Army in Italy, where he flew 23 missions over Germany and occupied Europe. On one memorable occasion, his aircraft had to drop out of the group due to the loss of an engine from battle damage. Realizing that solitary bombers were sitting targets, he urgently radioed for fighter escort. He and his crew credited their survival that night to the courage and skill of the Tuskegee Airmen who unhesitatingly responded to their radio call.
He was released to the Air Force Reserves after WWII but was recalled for the Korean conflict. He flew numerous airplanes including the B24, the C124 Globemaster, the C47 (the old Gooney bird, one of his favorites), and the SA16 Albatross. Friends often recounted the time that he flew a B17 under a bridge in Beaumont, Texas.
While based in Bordeaux, France, Berry met Mary Ann Malicki, a recent Penn State graduate who was teaching abroad. A grand courtship ensued as they toured the Swiss and French Alps in his classic Bugatti coupe. Following a year's service in Saudi Arabia, he and Mary Ann were married in Osceola Mills, Pennsylvania, in 1954. His military career spanned the globe from Europe to the Far East, ending with tours of Japan and Vietnam. Lt. Colonel Berryman retired from active duty at McChord AFB in 1970.
He completed additional courses at the University of Washington and went on to enjoy a second career as a woodworking and drafting instructor in Georgia for many years. A testament to the "Greatest Generation", he could build, fix, or create almost anything with his well-stocked workshop. He was tremendously skilled in woodworking, lostwax casting, copper enameling and drawing. He could capture faces and buildings in a rough sketch with a few swift strokes of his pencil, delighting countless children (and adults). .
He took great joy in his many grandchildren, who enjoyed listening to their Grandpap's stories. In addition to his immense enthusiasm for flying, he was also passionate about European sports cars. He raced in road rallies in several states and drove his 1936 Type 57 Bugatti for 50 years. He was a member of the Bugatti Owner's club and the Sports Car Club of San Juan Island.
A complete audiophile, he instilled in his children a lifelong love of music with his epic reel-to-reel classical and folk collection. Well travelled to farflung, desolate regions of the world while piloting for the Air Force, he also enjoyed visiting Europe with his family and friends. The Cotswolds, Devon, Yorkshire, and Derbyshire were particular favorites in England.
He will be remembered by his family as a kind, warm and gentle man. "Praising what is lost makes the remembrance dear." (Shakespeare)
Berry was preceded in death by his brother Julian Berryman.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; his children, Ray Berryman, Elaine Schumy (Erik), Paul Berryman (Pauladeceased), Camille Paulsen (Dirk); his seven grandchildren, Patrick and Pierce Berryman, Alex and Johanna Schumy, Marian, Louisa and Susannah Paulsen; his brother, Don Berryman; and his sisters, Marguerite Brusa, Betty Coleman, Kay Berryman and Ellen Cammack.
A funeral Mass was held on July 17, 2015 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Friday Harbor. Interment was at St. Francis cemetery with military funeral honors performed by the Friday Harbor Honor Guard. Remembrances may be sent to the G. C. Berryman Park Bench Memorial Fund (Islanders Bank), or to your favorite charity.

Burial will be in Millcreek Memorial Cemetery, Newmanstown.
Bethel was dead on arrival Tuesday night in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center.
Born in Amherst, Va. he was a son of the late William and Cora (Hudson) Bethel.
Surviving are his wife, Elsie (Lebo) Bethel; a son, Richard, Reed City, Mich., and a grandson.
Margaret Battel Bethel supplied the corrected birthdate and location, as Art Peck was incorrect. She further noted that although Dick was born in Toledo, he grew up in Pennsylvania.
Bio of Dick Bethel published by Encore, Grand Rapids Community Foundation.
Blessed with everything from a green thumb to a sense of humor, Dick Bethel inspires the rest of us to ponder if we're truly tapping our own reservoirs to the greatest degree possible to share with the outside world.
Even a lifelong battle with Crohn's disease has failed to slow this Belmont resident, who was born in Toledo, raised in Pennsylvania, and moved to Michigan to make his mark in education, theater, horticultural, the Boy Scouts of America and more.
While helping his father in the car sales business, he earned a degree from Youngstown State University in business administration, then took a job with Dow Corning in Midland, and later earned an MBA from Central Michigan University.
It's there he met wife Maggie, with whom he has one son, Daniel. After his stint with Dow, he worked for JC Penney, then Reith-Riley Construction. Along the way, he taught sales and business classes for 22 years at Ferris State University.
His interests include a relationship with scouting (son Daniel attained the Eagle rank), as well as a long-time commitment to the Crossroads Theater Guild in Reed City, where he's played the part of the disciple James the Lesser in a production of "The Last Supper" that originated in1986.
"It always looks good on your resume," Dick says, "when you list yourself as 'disciple.'"
Dick has also performed with the Rogue River Community Theater Company since 2001.
In association with 4-H and Michigan State University Cooperative Extension Service, Dick has pitched in on several endeavors, including that of a "rabbit leader" the last 16 years for youth raising hares to show at area fairs. In 2011, he earned Master Gardener designation through MSU, and has completed requirements for advanced master gardener and master naturalist.
"It's a whole different direction from the city boy who grew up in Redding, Pennsylvania," he acknowledges.
With Maggie at his side, these two avid gardeners have landscaped from scratch their two-acre wooded lot in Ada with lavish stands of perennials. They spend hours each spring spritzing up the beds with hundreds of annuals. Highlights include a bubbling fountain that flows from a massive puddingstone, and meandering pathways that connect to neighbors' properties.
"It's been a lot of enjoyment and fun," says Dick, whose life of service has extended to children as young as five and gardeners well into and beyond their 80s. "You get your rewards," he maintains, "from the enjoyment of others."
Sometimes, those rewards come with laughter. Not long ago, he was manning phones for the Extension Service and fielded a call from a woman who had just moved to northern Lower Michigan from southern Mississippi.
"Have there been any reports of spaceships landing in the Traverse City area?" she asked, and went on to describe what she thought was something tantamount to crop circles, with "the ground covered in some areas by a strange white coating."
"How long have you lived in Traverse City," Dick asked.
"Six months," came the reply.
"Do you know what frost is?"

Richard Milton Bethel, Polka-dancer, cat-lover, vintage milk-bottle enthusiast, and a man with an endless appetite for Pennsylvania Dutch dishes are just a few of the traits that describe Richard ""Dick"" Bethel. Dick found joy in all these things and so much more yet nothing gave him greater joy than serving others. Even on his last day of July 14, 2022, which came to a peaceful end at his home with his beloved wife beside him, he spoke of plans to serve coffee to the folks ""upstairs"".
Service to his community and others was a consistent quality that marked his entire life through his service in the Navy, his teaching career at Ferris State University, his 4-H volunteer work, and as a Master Gardener Hotline volunteer. Naming all the different ways he served during his life cannot be adequately chronicled in this space, but more important, does not honor his humble character.
Dick was born June 27, 1939, to Milton and Elsie Bethel of Reading, Pennsylvania, and was their only child. In 1974 he married his beloved wife Margaret; they were married 48 years. They lived in the Cannonsburg area for the last 30 years. In 1980 he became a father to their only child, Daniel Bethel. He gained a daughter-in-law, Sarah, in 2013. He became a grandfather to Benji, in 2015 and later to Clara (2018), and Susie (2020). Dick took great pride and love in his family, expressing his care through service. He asked his son and others (he was honored to be called ""Dad"" by several family friends), ""How's your car running?"". We love you too Dad, the cars are running just fine.
A memorial service is planned for August 19, 2022, at 11:30 at the Bostwick Lake Congregational Church, 7979 Belding Road, NE, Rockford, MI, 49341, followed by a light luncheon. Visitation will be held an hour before the service. The service will also be available for connection on Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85906057012?pwd=Y2RMOHdIOUV5cyt4SlJOQ2VPNW1CZz09.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan 4 H Foundation for the Kent County 4-H Youth Endowment or the Bostwick Lake Congregational Church Memorial Gardens.

Ancestry.com links her to the Anna Hruby, enumerated in Valley County, (and later Custer County) Nebraska 1900, 1910, and 1920. Dates of birth don't seem to match however, as the 1900 census shows Anna Hruby was born in April 1899. Additionally, if Joseph and Richard were her sons, she would have been enumerated with Joseph Maresh and those sons in 1920. It might be Joseph and Richard were born to a previous wife?
Bob Nohavec shows that Anna was actually Anna BETKOVA, the daughter of Vaclav BETKA and Elizabeth ROHACEK. Althought the 1930 census shows her as born in Nebraska, Bob instead lists her place of birth as Rounice, and shows she emigrated in 1908.

Sandy Ross Kiester, in the RootsWeb WorldConnect tree "Bavaria in Michigan," shows her as the daughter of Gustav August Beyerlein and Sarah Etta Douglas of Saginaw.
When he completed his draft registration card for World War I, he listed his date of birth as November 25, 1892, in Morse Bluff, NE. His SSDI instead shows 8 Dec 1891, as did Caroline Mastny. He was an employee of Frank Beznoska (presumably his father) in Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska at this time, which was June 5, 1917. He was listed as medium heighth and build, with brown eyes and dark brown hair.

R1a The R1a lineage is believed to have originated in the Eurasian Steppes north of the Black & Caspian Seas. This lineage is thought to descend from a population of the Kurgan culture, known for the domestication of the horse (circa 3000 B.C.E.). These people were also believed to be the first speakers of the Indo-European language group. This lineage is found in central & western Asia, India, and in Slavic populations of Europe.
Caroline Mastney reports that the family moved to Oklahoma in 1902. Frank was able to buy each of his five sons a farm. His granddaughter Maybelle notes he "had 5 adjoining 360 acres for the 5 boys."

In August, 2014, Kathryn Rybak emailed "Accidentally discovered this evening ... the eldest daughter of Frantisek Beznoska and Anna Kral ... please see Find-a-Grave #16471949 ... also see familysearch Ohio Death certificate 37574 for Marie Rajner 19 Jan 1919, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, stating her birth as Beroun, Cecho-Slovak and naming her parents.
My husband's grandmother was Josefa Beznoska d/o of Joseph Beznoska mrd in 1875 to Joseph Ribak/Rybak. I suspect that Joseph Beznoska, John Beznoska of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, were brothers of the Frantisek Beznoska you so wonderfully document.
The Find-a-Grave page further tells that Marie & Frank Rajner arrived at the Port of New York on May 19, 1873 aboard the ship Donau. I do not know Cheryl Rudolph who maintains these Rajner/Reiner memorials but was amazed as the knowledge shared here."
Gordon Beznoska instead showed her as dying 1865. This appears to actually be the year she was married.

In a biography she wrote for her children and grandchildren, MayBelle said that she started school in Nebraska, where they were temporarily living to help care for her ailing grandmother Schere. After she completed the fourth grade, they returned to Oklahoma and for her fifth and sixth grade year she and her sister walked to school in Junction City. She lived with "distant relatives Harry and Lilly" to help them care for their three year old daughter when she was seventh grade, while attending Cameron College. The next year she retured home and attended eighth grade in Walters. At the start of High School, she returned to Cameron College, where she was a boarding student for one year, until Geronimo opened a new High School. There were seven students in her 1931 graduating class: Harold Lee Walker, Edna Jo Watson, Golda Mae Northcutt, James Donald Stewart, Willie E. Walker, James Donivan Outenreath and MayBelle herself. MayBelle was class president, with James Donald Stewart serving as secretary.
From the time her mother lost her eye, MayBelle had to do all the families sewing, and she also worked side by side with her father on the farm, cuting wheat and oats with a horse drawn thrasher.

The following article, written by Rosalie Voytovich, daughter of Rose A. Jirousek, refers to her Grandparents, John and Theresa Jirousek. It was published in the January 6, 1985 SYRACUSE HERALD AMERICAN:
MASTER OF THE ART OF PROTEST Grandma even coped with some of Grandpa's silly requests
Everyone talks about his grandma, but not me. I am always accused of speaking in hyperbole. After all, who would believe Grandma had a child every two years from the time she was 16 to 46, and that she raised them all to adulthood? Who would believe Grandma never had a delinquent, a shirker or a discontent?
Grandma was no women's libber, but she was a master of protest. She began in 1865, at age 15, when she married a tall, skinny musician-teacher from Bohemia rather than homestead in Nebraska with her parents.
From the first day of her marriage, she ran her home like a tight ship and added to her crew every two years. She knitted all their stockings on 00 steel needles, made her own soap, and baked her own bread. She had no pediatrician, psychiatrist, orthodontist, or baby sitter...she was all things to all people.
When John, the oldest, nearly severed his finger with a butcher knife, she got her sewing basket and sewed the pinkie together with great success. She treated bronchitis with goosegrease and turpentine, and coughs with onion brown sugar syrup. She always obeyed her husband and spoke to him with great respect. She paddled her children when they needed it, and never worried about injuring their psyche.
Grandpa had a small wagon with a handle that served as a toy for the children and as a cart for him. He liked to take the market down to the farmers' market in Cleveland and buy fruits and vegetables in quantity. Grandma cooked them without a murmer.
One October day, Grandpa returned triumphantly with a pumpkin bigger than a bushel basket. "Make pies, lots of pies" he commanded. "But, Jan, it's too big!" "Make pies. We'll eat them." "Yes, Jan."
She made pies. When the white flour ran out, she used rye. The wood stove roared all day. She put pies on the table, the chairs, the window-sills and finally on the fence rail in the yard for all the world to see. She smiled and hummed all the while she worked. Grandpa never brought home another pumpkin.
Grandma sewed by hand all the intricately tucked petticoats the girls wore. She worked in the sitting room next to the potbelly stove. Grandpa also practiced his cello music there. The lint and threads from the sewing were strewn on the carpet around where she sat. Evidently, her presence and the disorder in the usually immaculate room disturbed his concentration.
"Why don't you ever sweep the floor?" he complained petulantly. "I will, Jan, I will" she replied humbly.
She got the broom and quietly swept up the small pile of litter. When Grandpa sat down to eat, she got the broom and asked him to move his feet so she could sweep up a few crumbs. When he sat down next to the kitchen stove to read his newspaper, she asked him to move his chair so she could reach the wood splinter from the kindling. When they retired and her amorously stroked her shoulder, she bounded up, remembering she had neglected to sweep the pantry after doing the dishes. As he ate breakfast she pulled the table away from him in mid-bite, and industriously swept away a few dog hairs.
He threw up his arms in surrender. She smiled sweetly.
Grandpa played the clarinet in a band that provided music for weddings and parties. Grandpa went to lots of parties while Grandma stayed home and knitted. She never complained until Grandpa began to come home later and later and merrier and merrier from his engagements. He woke up cross and headachy the morning after. Grandma was tolerant and understanding until the morning he shouted for quiet while she was chopping prunes with a chopper in a wooden mixing bowl. "Everything is too noisy around here," he whined, "We need to eliminate all the noisy things." "Yes, Jan" she assented as she stood up. She put down the bowl and chopper and quietly took the wooden clarinet from the table where he had left it the night before. She broke it over her kneee as if it were a twig. She put the lid lifter into the cover on the wood stove and carefully stoked the fire with the clarinet. Grandpa gaped, but her never uttered a word.
As I said, Grandma was a master at the art of protest. She smiled a lot.
