Myrtle Springs receives marker

An official Texas Historic Cemetery Marker was dedicated April 28, at Geneva Myrtle Springs Cemetery. The day was also the cemetery's annual homecoming......

The newly placed marker reads:
GENEVA MYRTLE SPRINGS CEMETERY

Situated North of the small, rural community of Geneva, the Geneva Myrtle Springs Cemetery serves as the primary resting place for pioneers, settlers of the area, and their descendants. Originally granted to Juan Ignatino Pifermo in 1794, the town of Geneva grew in the 1820s when pioneers began to settle there from the east. Geneva was first known as Shawnee village and later as Jimtown, after two early settlers of the are, Jim Halbert and Jim Willis. Originally surveyed for Daniel F. Renfro in 1838, the Geneva Myrtle Springs Cemetery is comprised of land granted by Levi T. ALLEN in 1879 for use as a church and cemetery. The Geneva Baptist Church was first located on the present day cemetery site, but later moved south of the area. In addition, a school was once located near the cemtery near Myrtle Springs, organized by William Thomas Arnold.

The general landscaping of the cemetery is traditional with brick, marble, sandstone, grantie, wood, and metal grave markers. The first marked grave is that of William J. JONE from 1888, but Bible records indicate that there were earlier unmarked graves, including that of Wiley William CROW (1845-1877). Among the many pioneer families interred at this cemetery, there are veterans of the Civil War, including Wiley CROW, Seth Marion LAYFIELD (1833-1906), and James T. MEADOR (1845-1933), as well as veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Iraq War. Burials for members of the fraternal organizations such as Woodmen of the World are present. Today, the Geneva Myrtle Springs Cemetery Association maintains and cares for the cemtery, while also serving the community of Geneva. Historic Texas Cemetery -2010.

17416 I2212  Means  William  Abt 1810  Abt 1876  Middle name variously shown as ADDISON and MARSHALL.

Per "The Handbook of Texas, Vol II" William Means was a native of Georgia and he came to Texas in 1832 and settled in present Sabine County, where he received his headright certificate on February 4, 1838. He served in the Texas Army from January 21 to April 21, 1836. During the battle of San Jacinto he was assigned to guard the baggage at a camp near Harrisburg. He was sheriff of Sabine County in 1836, and served as tax collector sometime before 1846. He represented Sabine County in the Eigth and Ninth Congresses, 1843-1845. He sold his headright certificate to H.M. Kinney. (He moved to DeWitt County by 1850.)

Per "Refugio" by Hobart Huson (appendix) Wm. Addison Means was a State Legislator from Refugio County in 1863. Wm. Means was a member of the Texas Republic Congress in 1843 and 1845.....in 1860 he is in San Patricio Co, also for 1870. So he must have been representing both San Patricio and Refugio in 1863. He died in 1876 in San Patricio.

On the 1860 San Patricio, Co TX census, he and his wife Francis are shown living with their son William, age 19, and four younger children Eliza (4), Hugh (4), Sam (2), and John (1).

MEANS - GARNER FUED taken from " The history of Patricio County Texas"
A former sheriff and the sheriff in office were shot and killed in San Patricio County in the early 1870s in a bitter controversy that disrupted the entire Meansville community and may have caused its abandonment. William Means was the son of Rachel Means, who came to Texas from Georgia with three children in 1832 and received a head right to 4, 605 acres in 1838 on land that is now part of the Lyndon B. Johnson Ranch. Means served in the Texas army and was later a Representative from Sabine County and served as the County's first sheriff before moving his family to San Patricio. His son, W. B. Means, was sheriff of San Patricio when Josiah Rodriguez was tried for murdering John Savage.
Means was a law-abiding citizen, respected in the community, however his three younger sons, John, Hugh and Alley, were in constant trouble with the law. Ed Garner was elected sheriff in 1874. The trouble between Garner and Means was supposed to have started as an outgrowth of an effort to stem the epidemic of Mexican cattle ticks. The loss in cattle was trememdous, and to combat the ticks cattlemen built dipping vats to treat the animals. All ranchers in the San Patricio area participated except the Means family. Finally ranchmen petitioned the sheriff to get a group of cowboys to round up and dip all of the Means cattle. This was done, and Means was billed for an amount said to be less than $35, which he refused to pay.
On January 30, 1876, Means' three sons rode to Papalote where they made the rounds of the saloons, rode up on the porch of one of the general merchandise stores, and began shooting up the store, hitting such targets as a barrel of lard, and a barrel of black strap molasses. The young men then retreated to their father's home in Meansville. Since Papalote was in Bee County, Sheriff W. K. Clark was summoned. He answered the call and sent word to Sheriff Ed Garner to meet him at Means' home. It was evidently in the early morning hours when the posse arrived. Sheriff Clark called out to Means to send the three sons out. After some time, Means appeared on the porch, wearing a long white nightshirt and carrying a rifle. Words were exchanged. No one seems to know who fired the first shot, but members of the posse reported that all Hell broke loose. Means went down. His daughter, Sarah, requested permission to go to her father, and, seeing that he was dead, ran back in the house screaming, "Pa is dead!." After the posse threatened to burn the house, the three fugitives filed out to be arrested. As Alley Means passed Sheriff Garner he said, "You killed my father. This isn't the end of it."
On Sunday, August 26,1876, the Garner family joined others in the community for evening worship at the Meansville church, Ed Garner saw Alley Means through the window and got up to go to the rear, leaning over to whisper to Marion Garner. "Alley Means is out there and I believe he is going to shoot me right here in church." These were the last words the Sheriff spoke. As he neared the door, a shot rang out from outside the double front door. Garner was hit. He turned and started back as another shot was fired, hitting one of the pews and ricocheting upward . Garner fell across one of the benches and died without saying a word, in full view of his wife, his children, and the entire congregation.
Alley Means was arrested for the murder and tried in Nueces County after the case was moved from San Patricio County. The Criminal Court of Appeals upheld the guilty sentence. Means family tradition holds that John Means, rather tha Alley, fired the shot that killed Ed Garner, anf that Alley was set up since he was young and single and more likely to draw a lighter sentence. In the report of Alley Means versus the State, Means descendants claimed that Means' body was riddled with double O buckshot, even in the soles of his feet. Both sheriffs turned themselves in after booking the Means boys. Both were no-billed by the Grand Jury.
After Garner's murder, a reign of terror prevailed in the community. No one lit a light at night in fear of attack by the Means family. Conditions eventually reached the point that the Texas Rangers were called in and an ultimatum was issued to the Means Clan to pack up and leave the County. Oldtimers said that 23 covered wagons headed up the trail as they left. Deed records bear out the fact that members of the Means family sold all their possessions in San Patricio County and were gone by the early 1880s.
Gov. John Irciand granted Alley a full pardon on May 9, 1885, after he served four years and two months of a life sentence. Means descendants have contended that $500 was paid for the pardon. Alley and his wife raised a family in Real County, apparently without anyone knowing about his past record. Other members of the Means family settled in Real County.

17468 I39941  Messec  Virginia "Ginny" Nell  26 May 1955  27 Nov 2019  The Texas Birth Index shows her as a daughter of Cecil MESSEC Jr. and Peggy PRUITT.

Virginia Nell "Ginny" Messec, longtime editor and travel writer at the San Antonio Express-News, was a mentor and advocate for workplace policy reform when the city had two daily newspapers.

Messec, 64, died Nov. 27 after undergoing 20 months of treatment for leukemia.

Her husband, retired reporter David McLemore, said Messec's impact on local journalism encompassed helping newcomers to the staff, ensuring a quality product and advocating best practices in the workplace.

"She would rise above her innate shyness to help people," McLemore said. "She believed in people doing the right thing for others, and she was not afraid to stand up for it."

Born on May 26, 1955, at Downtown Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, Messec grew up on a family farm with five siblings and graduated from Devine High School in 1973. A few months later, she was hired at the Express-News as a typist.

Messec became a library researcher the following year. A self-taught journalist, she became an editor in the Sunday Department and Insight section, starting with a weekend shift, then moving to projects and editing columnists.

Maury Maverick, a Sunday columnist who became like a surrogate family member, would often call Messec about his ideas, and had her and McLemore over as guests at his riverside property in Castroville.

He gave her a copy of his book "Texas Iconoclast," in 1997, and wrote inside the cover, "For my old friend and editor, Ginny Messec, who had a hand in the making of this book." In an Express-News column that year, Maverick wrote that she had gotten him a pay raise, "like a good sergeant looking after the troops." Maverick died in 2003.

McLemore, then a San Antonio Express reporter who later would work for the Dallas Morning News, met Messec while covering the 1976 party primaries. He realized as they had a conversation on election night in a break area that she was "the one," he said.

Messec also was a travel writer, visiting and writing about Japan, Hawaii, West Africa's Ivory Coast and other far-flung places, as well as beaches and dude ranches in Texas. She ran a youth columnist contest, working with schools, students and parents, and repeatedly won in-house awards for her page designs. She also was project coordinator for an office wastepaper recycling program in the early 1990s.

While working in the library, Messec took a grievance about a columnist's unwanted advances to Publisher Charles O. Kilpatrick, who got the behavior to stop, McLemore said. She later was quoted in the Inside Scoop, the paper's in-house newsletter, saying she wished the Express-News had a more uniform, flexible policy for parents with sick children at home.

Messec, suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, retired in 1992 and provided home schooling for the couple's two sons. She continued to travel, McLemore said. She loved driving and having long conversations with the radio turned off.

Messec started hospice care on Nov. 14, wanting to be at home with her husband and two dogs, and slipped into a suspended state, unable to talk early on Nov. 27. She died several hours later on the eve before Thanksgiving.

Georgia Marie Michl Schropfer was born to Frank and Anna (Brejcha) Michl on January 27, 1927 in her family's home on a farm near Tobias, Nebraska. She died November 8, 2020 at the Fairview Manor in Fairmont, Nebraska at the age of 93 years, 9 months, and 12 days.

Georgia attended Possum Hill country school, and graduated from Milligan High School in 1944. She taught country school, a one room school where she taught 1st-8th grade for four years. Georgia married Jess Schropfer on August 8, 1948 in the United Methodist Church in Milligan. The couple had four children. They lived and worked together on their farm near Ohiowa, Nebraska for nearly 68 years. Georgia milked cows and raised chickens. She was very proud that she paid all her household expenses with the money she earned selling cream and eggs. Georgia kept a large vegetable garden and fruit trees, as well as a flower garden. She fed her family very well with her canning, freezing, cooking and baking. Georgia was always ready with a hearty meal no matter how late the notice, or how many extra people would be there. Georgia always made herself available to help her husband and her sons on the farm, driving equipment, giving rides, driving for parts, and taking them lunch in the field.

She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran church in Ohiowa. She served as an officer in the Ladies Aide, including several years as President. She helped make quilts for Lutheran World relief. Georgia also served as a 4-H leader where she taught sewing and cooking skills.

Georgia loved to garden, read, sew and cook. She taught herself to sew by taking apart an old dress and using it as a pattern. Her skills grew and she was able to sew her daughter's wedding gown. She also raised all the gladiolas for her daughter's wedding. She made quilts, and sewed dolls and stuffed animals for her grandkids and great grandkids.

Georgia was happy to support her kids and grandkids by attending sporting events and concerts. She was proud to travel to Nashville, Tennessee to watch her daughter compete in the Junior Olympics. Georgia and Jess enjoyed traveling, and took their kids on trips to Yellowstone and Pikes Peak and to visit family. Later, they traveled with family and friends to destinations including Washington D.C., Disney World, California, Seattle and Canada, as well as numerous trips to visit family and friends.

Georgia's greatest joy was her family. She loved spending time with her kids, grandkids, great grandkids, and her great great granddaughter. Georgia loved caring for her grandkids, and was always up for a project, be it painting, sewing, flower arranging, or filling the living room with a "covered wagon" made of cushions and pillows. She welcomed her grandkids' "help" in the garden, caring for chickens, and cooking. When she baked a pie, the grandkids baked their own small pie to go with it.

After Jess passed away, she moved to Country Reflections Assisted Living in Fairmont. She enjoyed her time there and had many close friends, residents and staff, that she considered to be like family.

Georgia was preceded in death by her husband Jess, her parents, Frank and Anna Michl, her siblings Albert and Alice Michl, Herman and Erma Michl, Carl and Elsie Michl Leo Michl and Silvia and Joe Girmus.

She is survived by her sister, Blanche Knudson; her son Duane Schropfer;, her son and daughter-in-law Ron and Georgia Schropfer;, daughter and son-in-law Bill and Carol Woodward, son and daughter-in-law Roger and Carrie Schropfer; grandchildren Bill and Amanda Schropfer, Ann and Kerry Holmstrom, Jon and Dawn Schropfer, Ben and Trina Schropfer, Cari and Andres Casas, Eric and Holli Woodward, Amanda Woodward and husband Ben Owen, Justin and Laura Britton, Brandon and Amber Hartsock; great-grandchildren Dietra and B.J. Miller, Nate Schropfer, Wyatt and Garrett Hansen, Becka and Linnea Holmstrom, Gus Schropfer, Amber, Sarah, Rachel and Lucy Schropfer, Madison Casas, Jackson and Lexi Woodward, Lucas Owen, Alaysia, Kaidan and Charlie Britton, Lilly Krusemark, Penelope Hartsock, and Emory Hartsock, great- great-granddaughter, Ripley Miller; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

It was Georgia's wish to be cremated with a private family committal of ashes to be held at a later date in the Ohiowa Public Cemetery.
