William Ware, son of Moses and Martha C. McLemore
Died - 8 September 1841; Aged 5 years, 3 months, 5 days
His Tennessee Death certificate indicates he was married, and engaged in clerical work, last employed by the Federal Reserve Bank. Informant was Mrs. W. C. Houston (his sister, Lizzie Minor McLemore Houston) also of Woodbury, Tennessee.
(Research):Not listed by MaryLynn Santa as a child of William and Annie, however, he was living in their household at the time of the 1870 census, and therefore assumed to be a child of theirs. This may be incorrect.
John Stromberger writes that William had been married first to Permelia Montgomery, however she died only four months after their marriage in late 1869. She was also buried in the Mason City Cemetery. Her photo remained in the family home, and William's second wife and children referred to her as "Aunt Permelia."

DENTAL SURGERY. Dr. W. Y. McLemore, having pursued the study and practice of his profession with Dr. Greenleaf, of Peoria, and thoroughly mastered all its details. Dr. McLemore came to Mason City in 1871 and opened rooms over Cargill & Swing's. He is prepared to undertake anything ever performed in dentistry. He has also been a student of anatomy and physiology, so that he can meet successfully many complicated cases beyond the reach of ordinary dentists. In proof of his skill he can refer to his former instructor, Dr. Greenleaf, and to the well-known surgeon, Dr. J. P. Walker, of Mason City. He is well provided with all the tools and machinery for preparing plates, making permanent and good fitting jobs. He is a young man and ambitious to stand high in his profession, and therefore, keeps himself informed by study of all the improvements in his art. The operation for cleft palate, by which speech is made perfect, has been frequently performed by Dr. McLemore, and probably by no other surgeon-dentitst in this part of the country.

William Y. McLemore, born in Dade County in 1852, son of Archibald and Mary (Brown) McLemore, is the senior member of the firm of McLemore Brothers, general merchants and dealers in farm implements, live stock, etc., established in July, 1884. The value of their sales annually is about $30,000 the value of the stock being about $8,000. The subject of this sketch, the fourth child of a family of six, three sons and three daughters, was raised on the farm, received a common school education, and remained at home till 1878, when he entered the mercantile business at Crossroads with G. W. Wilson, where they remained in business till the railroad was built, at which time they removed to Everton and built the first store building, which was in the woods. The firm continued till 1882, in September, when Mr. McLemore retired, and in 1884 established the present firm with his brothers, Robert F. and Jasper M. This firm is one of the strongest mercantile firms in Dade County, They began with nothing, are thorough-going and live business men, and upright citizens. In 1881 William Y. married Serepta C., daughter of Calvin and Acenith Wheeler, formerly of East Tennessee, but early settlers of Dade County, where Mrs. McLemore was born, and where the father died. The mother died in Kansas. Mr. Wheeler was a merchant and manufacturer. Our subject has had three children, two of whom are living. In politics he is a Republican, voting for Hayes in 1876. He and wife are Presbyterians.
His death certificate, issued by the State of Missouri, lists his usual occupation as a Banker, and shows him to be the son of Archibald McLemore and Mary Brown of Tennessee. The informant was Clarence McLemore of Everton, MO. (Copy courtesy of Paul Williams).

Wright MACKLEMORE had 140 acres of land patented to him on the south side of Poplar Swamp in Isle of Wight County (the southwestern part, later Southampton County), Virginia on August 1, 1734 (Patent Book 15, pg. 242). Since Wright was not among the known sons of James and Fortune, and therefore must have been one of, if not THE, oldest grandson. Hence his father had to have been James' eldest son, William, as no one else could have been married by 1713, the latest date possible for Wright's birth.
Wright is known to have had at least four sons (and possibly a fifth) and two daughters. After 1750, he and his sons Wright Jr., William, Moses, and Drewry (and according to Rudy H. Leverett, also a James), and two daughters Judeth, wife of William PITMAN, and ???, wife of James WIGGINS, are found in Edgecombe County on or near land devised to Wright's father William Sr. by James, the original immigrant. Several of these family members moved southward into Duplin (later Sampson) County, North Carolina, in the 1770's, where Wright's son William is credited with founding a large family line. (James L. McLemore, III, p 51).

Briar Branch Baptist Church is the third oldest Baptist Church in Bladen County. The church had its beginning as a mission of the Beaver Dam Baptist Church of Sampson County [ed: Cumberland County] which some years ago was in Bladen County. According to the records of the Beaver Dam Baptist Church that church began holding conferences at Briar Branch on Saturday before the fourth Lords Day in October of 1828. This was some four years before White Lake Baptist Church was constituted as the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and some six years before Hickory Grove Baptist Church was constituted. But Briar Branch continued to be a mission of Beaverdam Church until 1843, and was not duly constituted.
In a conference at Briar Branch on Saturday before the fourth Lord's Day in October of 1843, Beaver Dam Baptist Church agreed to dismiss the following members to constitute the church at Briar Branch: Amos Cain, Daniel L. Smith, Daniel Smith, Daniel Register, George W. Downing, Thomas Sessoms, William D. Smith, Baseter Davis, Edward Davis, Beaman West, Sarah A. Smith, Rhoda Gardner, Mary A. Downing, Elizabeth Smith, Aley Bryant, Margaret Sessoms, Anna M. Tatum, Elsa McLemore, May J. Tatum, Mary J. Reeves, Mary Register, John Smith, Sr., Evin Downing, William Harvey, John H. In a letter dated October 29, 1986, written by James L. McLemore, III to Rudy Leverett, it is noted that by deed dated December 30, 1809, and recorded in July, 1811, in Southampton Deed Book 12, page 354, Joel WESTBROOK and his first wife Rebecca [Nicholson] conveyed to her kinsman John NICHOLSON 43 3/4 acres, being 1/4 of a tract of 175 acres, "Beginning at a maple by the side of poplar swamp a corner tree of WRIGHT McLEMORE's thence by said McLemore's line to a red oak, thence N. East course to lightwood post in Adam IVEY's thence along said IVEY's to a maple by the side of the northwest prong of the Mery? branch, thence down the various courses of said branch (to) poplar swamp, thence down the said Swamp to the beginning."
IT IS NOT KNOWN, however, which of the several contemporaneous Wright McLemore's this deed description relates to. James McLemore also notes that it is not unusual for an old description to be copied and recopied into subsequent deeds without making any attempt to correct adjoining land owners after their death or after the sale to a new owner. However, he states that his experience with deeds of that era seems to indicate that the draftsmen of those conveyences tried to keep up with who was the current adjoining land owner. Hence he believes that a Wright McLemore owned land adjoining Joel Westbrook and Adam Ivey on Poplar Swamp in 1809.
James McLemore, III writes that he did not appear to have any family.,
I have in my notes, unsourced, a reference to a deed between MACLEMORE, Wright Grantee p 413 of Book 4 Anthony RITCHIE to Wright MACLAMORE 19 Feb 1770 50 pounds for 150 acres. Later in the year, he sold land to James TINKER, as detailed below.
Abstract of Deed Sampson County Deed Books Book 4, Page 422

(Abstracted from the original by Melinda McLemore Strong on 26 May 2005)
This deed is ASSUMED to involve Wright McLemore, Jr, as Mark Freeman indicates that his father, Wright, died in 1766, prior to the execution of the above referenced deed
Is this the Wright (unmarried) who was listed in the Salisbury District of Surry County, NC at the time of the 1790 census? The listing was for 1 male, over 16.
Robert McLemore Butler states that a Wright McLemore married a Sarah RANSOME on 17 May 1795 in Sampson County, North Carolina. It is not known with certainty which of the several Wright McLemore's that were contempories was the groom. If this is his marriage record, he would have been in his 60's. However this marriage is also listed, on Ancestry.com as "McLemore, Wright & Sarah Ransome, 16 May 1795, George HUDSPETH, bondsman. The book MARRIAGES SURRY COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA 1779-1868 is the source of this information. The marriage therefore appears to be for another Wright McLemore, and not the Wright of Sampson County.
(Research):In a letter dated October 29, 1986, written by James L. James McLemore also notes that it is not unusual for an old description to be copied and recopied into subsequent deeds without making any attempt to correct adjoining land owners after their death or after the sale to a new owner. Hence he believes that a Wright McLemore owned land adjoining Joel Westbrook and Adam Ivey on Poplar Swamp in 1809.
In Rudy Leverett's files at the McCain Library and Archives at the University of Southern Mississippi, there is a photocopy of a "Indented Certificate" between the Treasury Office in Charleston, South Carolina, and the Estate of a Wright McLemore. Wright's Estate was entitled to the sum of Four Shillings and four pence on demand, which represents one Year's Interest on the Principal Sum of Three pounds two Shillings and ten pence, and the like Interest annually, with the principal sum to be paid on the twenth sixth of January 1788. This certificate was dated January 26, 1786. Wright's widow, Mary McLemore signed this indenture based on the service of her Late Husband, Wright McLemore on the 13th of January 1787. It appears that Wright McLemore served 17 days as a private in 1779, and additional 44 days in the Militia in 1779, as certified by Capt Garvin, and 56 days as a private in the Militia in 1780.
It is ASSUMED this record relates to the Wright McLemore was was the son of Ricard McLemore and Agnes Frisby, based on both his age (30 or younger) and location (South Carolina). This is not known for certain, and the record may relate to one of the several Wright McLemore's that lived in the area of the Virginia and Carolina's prior to the Revolutionary War. This Revolutionary Service is also referenced in "Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution" by Bobby Gilmer Moss (Genealogical Publishing Co, Inc 1983). Page 636 of this book shows "McLemore, Wright He served in the militia during 1779 and 1780. A.A. 5125; X552; X 1513.
Included in Dr. Leverett's files was a notecard for Wright, indicating his date of death was ca 1784. Dr. Leverett further noted that he received a letter from Norma Moon in August, 1978, in which she stated that "Richmond County, Ga., Wright married Mary Day (widow), Georgia Colonial Records state in deed dated Janayr 18, 1774 that children of Owen DAY were conveyed 1/2 of 500 acres...Mary Day signs Wrights Indents to John Chisolm. Wright died ca. 1784. He served 117 days in S.C. militia."
Handwritten on the notecard was a note that Wright and Amos were of the same generation, perhaps being an older brother or 1rst cousin. This Wright would be a first cousin, once removed, of Amos McLemore of Sampson County, NC.
(The original photocopy was recieved by Rudy Leverett from the S.C. Dept. of Archives and History in Columbia, South Carolina in 1982. Melba Gene McLemore received a copy from the McCain Library in June, 2006. The copy was in AM04-27, Box 6).
James McKinney indicated that Wright was on Skaggs Creek in 1806 paying taxes on 100 acres of Thompson's land. He was also on the 1810 and 1820 Census of Rockcastle County.
Richard Gentry made claim for Revolutionary service under the 1832 law. He said he was born in Lunenburg Co.Va. Dec.27, 1755. He resided in Union District near the Tiger River in 1780 he served under Col.James Cotton in the battle of Cowpens and battle of King's Mountian. Richard married in 1793 Gestin daughter of Ayres Hedgepeth. Soldier died in Rockcastle Co.Ky. Feb.13, 1836
On the 7th day of April 1855 Jestin Gentry aged 80 years a resident of Rockcastle Co. she states that her husband Richard Gentry rec'd $48.39 per. She states she was married to Richard Gentry in Surry Co.N.C. by William Elliot and her name before she marrried was Gestin Hudspeth. She was making claim for bounty land on the 3rd day of March 1855.
In Nov.17, 1842 Wright McClemore a resident of Lincoln Co.Ky. made an affadavit for Jenstin. He states "I lived about 4 miles from Gestin in Surry Co.N.C. He states do to the excessive rain he did not attend the wedding of Richard Gentry and Jestin but his neighbors did" He further states that Richard Gentry and his wife visited his father many times. "They had children in North Carolina and more after moving to Kentucky." He further states that his brother Gilliam made affadavit for Richard Gentry to receive his pension.
Richard Gentry's pension application is #4332
Revolutionary War Pension Applications, National Archives Microfilm. File W8844, (BLWt 26713-160-55): Richard GENTRY, widow Justina or Gestin, [also Justin, Justiney, Gestiney] of Rockcastle Co. KY. Credited with 13 months service as a private in SC militia.
Richard Gentry appeared in Rockcastle County court, KY, 12 Sep 1832, age 77 years as of next Dec. 27th [born 27 Dec 1755]. Testified that he had first volunteered for service in SC militia from Union District, SC, near the Tyger River [about 1780]... He gave his birthplace as Lunenburg Co. VA, and had lived three years in Lincoln Co. KY before moving to Rockcastle Co.
Gestin [Gentry] appeared in Rockcastle Co. court on 25 Nov 1839, age given as 70 years, to apply for widow benefits. She stated that she was married to Richard Gentry in the spring season of 1792 (she did not recall the month), and was married in [Surry Co., NC]. She stated that Richard died 13 Feb 1836.
Gestin appeared again on 23 Jun 1842, age given again as 70 years, to testify further as to Richard's war service. She stated that she knew Richard before and during his service, but she was young and she did not know how he entered the service or where he served except what Richard told her after they were married. She recalled that he entered service in SC--she was living at the time in NC. Nathaniel Aldridge, who lived 2 or 3 miles from Gestin in Surry Co. testified that her father was Ayres Hedgepe

Melba Gene McLemore noted that in both the April 7, 1824 and July 5, 1826 issue of THE VILLAGE MESSENGER, published in Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee, a Wright M'LEMORE was listed among those for whom dead letters were being held at the Fayetteville Post Office. This makes him very likely a brother of Joel and Sterling McLemore, whose families were in Fayetteville, Tennessee during this same time frame. Joel and Sterling were sons of Sterling and Rebecca McLemore of Fayette County, Kentucky, originally from North Carolina.
It is possible, however, that Wright was instead a son of Wright McLemore and Sarah Ransome of North Carolina.
Melba Gene McLemore has the following Oral Family History from Coy McLemore, born 1940 and living in Sheridan, Arkansas in July, 2005:
"His Daddy (Eluas McLemore) spoke often of his grandfather, Wright McLemore. He said that Wright and a brother came to Arkansas together. Granddaddy Wright stayed in Arkansas, and the other brother left for Lousiana..." (very likely this was Keton Jones McLemore, born ca 1809 in Kentucky and living in Sabine Parish, Louisiana at the time of the 1850 census). Coy didn't recall were the McLemore's lived prior to Arkansas, but reported that the family was Scoth/Irish.
Dolores McLemore McKee reports that all three of Wright's sons died as a result of the Civil War, and that his sons all left children to be raised by their mothers and family members.

A direct male descendant volunteered to have his DNA tested. The results can be found at www.ysearch.org, under the user ID #ag2C5. The FamilyTreeDNA kit number is 87115.
The descendant was a participant in the Morrison DNA study. His DNA was a high definition match to two other McLemore's (not previously proven to be related), as well as to a McElmurry from Kentucky. See the results for Group O at the following website:
http://www.geneticousins.com/morrison/
The McLemore's that he matched were (1) a descendant of Keton Jones McLemore, born in Kentucky and living in Sabine Parish, Louisiana in 1850 (they were one step removed at 25 markers); and (2) a descendant of John McLemore, born 1822 in North Carolina and living in Decatur County, Georgia in 1850 (they were two steps removed at 25 markers).
The different markers, in each case, were rapidly mutuating.
According to FamilytreeDNA in Houston, the probability that the two DNA donors share a common ancestor, is as follows:

In addition to this above matches, the Wright McLemore descendant also matches to two proven descendants of Abraham Macklemore, the immigrant, and John McLemore, born 1762, the Revolutionary soldier who left descendants in Knox County, Tennessee; Dade County, Missouri; Illinois; Mississippi; and Alabama, and a McElmurry of Kentucky.
Each of these matches, including the McElmurry, can be found indexed in these files.
The members of R1b are believed to be the descendants of the first modern humans who entered Europe about 35,000-40,000 years ago. Those R1b forebearers were the people who painted the beautiful art in the caves in Spain and France. They were the contemporaries (and perhaps exterminators) of the European Neanderthals. R1b is the most common Y haplogroup in Europe - more than half of men of European descent belong to R1b. Fourteen of the 30 most common haplotypes in the YSTR.org database are typical of R1b.

SOME HISTORY OF BRIAR BRANCH BAPTIST CHURCH
BLADEN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
By, Rev. Nash A. Odom, Pastor of the First Baptist Church, Dublin, N, C. and President of the Bladen County Historical Society.
Briar Branch Baptist Church is the third oldest Baptist Church in Bladen County. The church had its beginning as a mission of the Beaver Dam Baptist Church of Sampson County [editor: Cumberland County] which some years ago was in Bladen County.
In a conference at Briar Branch on Saturday before the fourth Lord's Day in October of 1843, Beaver Dam Baptist Church agreed to dismiss the following members to constitute the church at Briar Branch:
Amos Cain, Daniel L. Smith, Daniel Smith, Daniel Register, George W. Downing, Thomas Sessoms, William D. Smith, Baseter Davis, Edward Davis, Beaman West, Sarah A. Smith, Rhoda Gardner, Mary A. Downing, Elizabeth Smith, Aley Bryant, Margaret Sessoms, Anna M. Tatum,Elsa McLEMORE, May J. Tatum, Mary J. Reeves, Mary Register, John Smith, Sr., Evin Downing, William Harvey, John H. Tatum, William J. Cowan, Daniel R. Cain, John D. Smith, Owen J. Gardner, Nathan H. Jones, Meredith Cain, Helen Davis, Francis Sessoms, Ann J. Harvey, Mary Smith, Susan Smith, Martha Smith, Elizabeth A. Downing, Jane Weeks, Susan Smith, Sr., Mary Sessoms, Molsey Davis, James Smith, Theophlus Tatum, Wright McLEMORE, John Downing, James S. Beard, John Cain, Milton J. Smith, Thomas B. Cowan, William C, West, John Edge, Elizabeth Cain, Mary Downing, Pen[n]y Hayes, Sarah Suggs, Claressa Beard, Susan Smith, Zillpha Smith, Mary A. Cain, Francis Sessoms, Martha West.
On September 15, 1848, George W. Downing gave land to Briar Branch Church, John Cain and Theopheles Tatum were the deacons and trustees that handled the transaction. The deed states that it was a certain tract or parcel of land lying on the Westside of Turnbull Creek containing one acre more or less. The witnesses were J, J. Jones and D. R. Cain. This deed is found in the Register of Deeds Office, Bladen County, Book 44, Page 5.
Briar Branch Church became a member of the old Cape Fear Baptist Association soon after her organization. The minutes of the Cape Fear Association for 1851 records Briar Branch as a member of that body with 9 baptisms that year and 139 members. It was the second largest member of the Association in Bladen County that year, second only to Beaverdam Church which was the mother church of Briar Branch. Delegates to the 1851 Association were T. Tatum, J. Downing, and D. R. Cain. Their report sent in says, "This church has had a revival. No Pastor."
The minutes of the Cape Fear Association for 1854 that D. C. Shaw, John H. Tatum, and D. R. Cain were the delegates and the churches report read, " Complain of difficulties, which have produced coldness and discord, Elder James Cashwell is Pastor." The minutes of the Fifty-third Session of the Cape Fear Association for 1857 reports the following delegates, "Theophilus Tatum, W, T. Jessup, J. H. Tatum"' and the church had 141 members. Their report concerning the state of the church reads, "Has a flourishing Bible Society, and thinks that appearance betoken good. Elder Wm. Ayers is Pastor."
The minutes of the Cape Fear Association for 1857 mentions that the Briar Branch Bible Society contributed $6.70 to the Association and $5.00 to the Domestic Mission Board. The Minutes for 1858 gives the following report; " Communicates nothing interesting, Elder William Ayers is supply." Delegates for 1858 were Jonathan Jones, Nathan Johnson and W. F. Jessup and there were 155 members. The minutes of the Cape Fear Association for 1859 records the following delegates: G. W. Downing, E. J. Cain, J. H. Tatum, and W. K. Register and there were 122 members. The report for that year read, " Has nothing interesting. Has dismissed a considerable number to join other churches. Elder William Ayres is Supply." Two new churches being constituted that year that perhaps drew members from Briar Branch were Paradise Baptist Church and White Oak Baptist Church. Surely White Oak Church took some of the members.
The trend for Briar Branch continues to go downward. The minutes for 1861 lists the following delegates: T. Tatum, J. H. Tatum, and A. Smith. There were 106 members, and their report reads, "Difficulties, has no pastor and no additions of members."
One interesting question was presented to the Cape Fear Association for 1862, The question presented on Oct. 25th of that year for the association to consider was " Is it right for a member of the church to distill his own fruit and that of his neighbors, and use the spirits as he pleases or sell it to good citizens?" The answer given was; "The quere from Briar Branch Church was again taken up and answered as follows to-wit: Such are the circumstances with which we are now surrounded, that any other than that of medicinal and mechanical purposes savors the spirit of extortion that characterizes the present course of the wicked world, and that any toleration beyond that will tend to evil."
Briar Branch, made an application for a letter of dismission to join the Cedar Creek Association and the application was granted that same year. They were represented at this last association by T. Davis, J. H. Tatum, and G. W, Downing and there were 105 members. Their report for 1862 read: "No special change. Has been without a Pastor the past year. Brother Joab Smith has labored with them."
The minutes of the Cedar Creek Association for 1863 records that Briar Branch was a member of that Association and was represented by W. T. Jessup, J. R. Tatum, and W. Downing. The church grew to 128 members that year. Their report reads, " This church has enjoyed a revival season, Christians revived, sinners awakened and mourners converted. Elder Joab Smith is their Pastor." The minutes of the Cedar Creek Association of 1864 reports, " Nothing special. F. Prevail, Pastor." Delegates were J. H. Tatum, E. J. Cain and D. S. Tatum. The minutes of the Cedar Creek for 1867 mentions, " Have enjoyed some precious meetings. Twenty added by baptism, Elder Martin is Pastor." Delegates were Wm. Suggs, W. H. Downing, and J. H. Tatum. There were 103 members.
The minutes of the session of the Cedar Creek for 1869 reveal the following resolution passed: "Resolved, that the next session of this body be held with the church at Briar Branch, Bladen County, N. C. commencing at half past 10 o'clock A, M. on Thursday before third Sabbath in October, 1870. Elder A. B. Alderman, to preach the Introductory Sermon; Elder E. D. Johnson, Alternate." Pastor for 1869 was W. S. Melvin, Clerk was W. T. Jessup. The following interesting item is found in the minutes for 1869: "A young lady, a member of one of the churches, (who died in Florida) having on her death bed, given her breast pin to be sold for Foreign Missions, the Association buys the same at five dollars and presents the pin to her youngest sister." Included among those who contributed to buying the pin from Briar Branch were A.S. Smith, $ .25; J.S. Beard, $ .25; Elder J. Smith, $ .25; and V. Downing, $ .50.
The minutes of the Cedar Creek Association for 1872 records that W. S. Melvin was the pastor and clerk W. T. Jessup. Briar Branch Church continued as a member of the Cedar Creek Association until 1892. The minutes for 1891 record the following delegates: " M. Johnson, H. W. Cain, and T. L. Jones." There were 103 members. Eleven of the twenty-six churches in the Cedar Creek Association that year were located in Bladen County. In 1891, H. W. Cain was Superintendent of the Sunday School which had 22 enrolled, The pastor was D. S. Bullard and the clerk was D. C. Shaw.
The last year that Briar Branch was a member of the Cedar Creek Association was 1892. Her delegates that year to the association that met at White Oak Church were D. S. Bullard, J. J. Bullard, and H. Smith. The church had 85 members, Elder C. E. Beard was the Pastor and D. C. Shaw was the clerk. Letters for granted the following churches that year from Cedar Creek Association to join the Bladen Baptist Association: Briar Branch, Beard's Chapel, Cypress Creek, Centre Road, Kate's Chapel, Smith's Chapel, Suggs Grove, White Oak, and White Lake.
We know very little about the first church house that Briar Branch occupied. It was probably a one-room log or frame wooden building which was the style or nature of Baptist buildings of that day. There was a building standing in 1848 for the church building is mentioned in the deed filed. This building was used until a new one was built in 1898. The first house of worship was lost by fire. The present house of worship was the one built in 1898. The Bladen Associational minutes for 1927 states that this building was valued at $1,500. The minutes of Briar Branch Church for November 2, 1947, relates that, " a vote was cast to put Sunday School rooms at the back of the church. Mrs. Lula Long gave timber to be cut for framing."
Briar Branch licensed Richard McDuffie to preach the gospel in June of 1949. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Glenn McDuffie of Briar Branch Church and is currently the pastor of the Carolina Beach Baptist Church.
He was ordained at a special service held on the fourth Sunday in February of 1952 at Briar Branch. Among those having served as pastors have been: J. H. Dobson, M. L. Mintz, D. L. Johnson, A. J. Freeman, Alex Peterson, C. B. Horne, W. A. Coleman, A. D. Carter, A.C. Herring, A. H. Dove, T. R. Spell, L. L. Todd, Ervin Jerrell, E. C. Reeves, George Denton, E. L. Anderson. The present pastor is Rev. L. L. Barnes. He has served for 19 years. The church has just completed a remodeling program under Rev. Barnes and added a porch and steeple. The church has used Jones Lake and Salters Lake for many years as places for baptismal Services.
Among the early members was William J. Cowan who was a very prominent citizen of Bladen County. He was the son of John Cowan who married Elizabeth Salter. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Salter and Sarah Lloyd Salter Bladen County's famous heroine in the Battle of Elizabethtown. The Cowans lived at one time in that section of the county near the Salters. General W. J. Cowan 'was a member of the House of Commons in North Carolina in 1817, 1818, and 1821. His wife, Charlotte is buried in the Cowan-Lesesne Cemetery near Dublin, also his adopted son whose monument reads thus: "William Cowan, Son of James W. and Lucy Ann Lesesne and adopted son of W. J. Cowan. Born July 11, 1832 - Died September 2, 1850." His wife's monument reads, " Charlotte, Wife of Gen. W. J. Cowan, Died Aug. 6, 1846, Aged 62 years." There is a Cowan's Branch that flows nearby. General William J. Cowan will is recorded in Bladen County and was dated Apr 14, 1855, and his will states that he was formerly a resident of Bladen County but was residing in 1855 in Washington, D. C. He was buried Washington, D. C. His sister was a prominent member the old Welsh Neck Baptist Church in South Carolina and married General Evander McIver.

Melba Gene McLemore shows that he married three times, to Lola DERASAUL, Elizabeth BURKHAM Mason (his first cousin, daughter of his mother's sister Victoria Reynolds Mason), and Willie BAILEY.
Was Wright the father of Maggie McLemore, born in Jan 1891 in Arkansas? Maggie was living with her grandmother, Elvira McLemore Newman in Lincoln County, Arkansas at the time of the 1900 census.
Melba Gene indicates that sometime before, Wright had married to his third wife, Willie Bailey, and they were living in Owen, Lincoln County, Arkansas at the time of the 1900 census. Living with them was 6 year old James Harmon, born March 1894, a step son to Wright, born to Willie during her first marriage. They were also the parents of 10 month old Sterling McLemore.
In 1910, Willie Bailey Harmon McLemore was remarried to Eli BENNINGFILED. They were living in Niven Twp, Jefferson County, Arkansas with their blended family.

A teamster, he later owned a butcher shop in McDade, Texas.
Hung, along with his brother Thad, by vigilantes in McDade, Texas on Christmas Eve, 1883. Further details can be found in "I'LL DIE BEFORE I'LL RUN: The Story of the Great Feuds of Texas" by C.L. Sonnichsen (University of Nebraska Press, c. 1951, 1961), (pp. 178-187).
The following letter was written by Wright's widow some two weeks after the tragedy:
The Late Tragedies at McDade From the News
MCDADE. January 14, 1881 (sic)-Now while the horrible tragedy that was enacted at this place on Christmas eve and day is going the rounds of the press, just as correspondents see fit to clothe, and as reporters get it, I, a widow of one of the victims, claim a hearing. Three weeks have passed since the McLemore and Batey families received their double blow. Life with its duties and cares are before us, while behind us lies the shadow of our murdered dead and heart wounds that time can never heal.
The Bastrop Advertisor, containing an account of the triple lynching in Texas, as taken from the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, is before me; also the reported interview with F. H. McLemore. It seems that it was proved at the inquest that Thad McLemore was under arrest, charged with burglary; that Wright McLemore and Henry Pfeiffer were under a nominal bond for cattle-stealing when taken from the saloon. That Jack, Azberry and Haywood Batey, Charley Goodman, Burt Hasley and Robert Stevens came in town next day defient, trying to learn the fate of their friends; that all were old residents, and all were under bad repute except Jack Batey. Thad McLemore was under arrest through charges by S. E. Walker, as was ascertained afterward. I hope that Thad died in ignorance of the latter fact, for he thought Walker a friend.
As to Wright McLemore, my husband, being under a nominal bond for cattle-stealing, there is no truth in it. His accusers have not, nor can not, come forth! That all were old residents, and under bad repute, is another untruth. Wright McLemore had only been in the county six months, was almost an entire stranger. We had been living in McDade only about two and a half months. My husband was old and badly crippled with rheumatism, an object of pity to anyone who had a spark of that element. He felt that his life was nearly over, and came here to spend his remaining days near his brothers. The southern and north-western counties know W. K. McLemore; Bastrop did not.
Thad McLemore and his brother Felix were volunteers from here in the Confederate army; served their time, came back, married and settled down in this county, where they have lived ever since in good repute; and yet one of those brothers, while in custody, was taken by a mob from a town he had helped to build, at an early hour, and on an evening when such a thing would be more difficult to perform than at any other time, carried out and hanged, and McDade knew nothing of it until the next day.
And that next day! Oh, it is a deed worthy of being handed down to posterity with the Alamo!
As to the Batey crowd going in armed and defiant, that is also false. It is true they went in together. It is a custom of old Mrs. Batey to get all of her family together on Christmas day. They boys said they would ride into town to see what was going on; and come back for an early dinner. They were not drinking; none were armed except Haywood Batey and Charley Goodman; the latter never used his pistol, it being on his person all the time, and turned the ball that wounded him. Haywood Batey had only four charges in his, so that might account for the miraculous escape of Milton and Bishop, as there were from sixty to one hundred shots! I saw them as they rode into town, and a few minutes later Azberry Batey rode up to my door to see if the news he had heard was true. I think the very last rational words he ever spoke were to me. I saw him fifteen minutes later lying in the streets dead. I see from the Bastrop Advertisor that it is generally supposed that the lynching was the outgrowth of a vigilant committee organized in McDade after the shooting of Heffington, of Lee County, and that the McLemore brothers were suspected as being implicated. My husband did not know Heffington.
Thad McLemore left town before the train came down that Fitzpatrick, the accused, was on. We knew nothing of a man being shot until the following Monday. The shooting was done on Saturday night. In a special from McDade to The Galveston News, dated December 25, it was stated that Wright McLemore happened to be present when the others were taken out. Since them The News has come out with an editorial which should elect him for our next governor, if such a man could be spared from the press. Texas, the empire State of the Union, has a constitution that demands the right to say who shall and who shall not be put to death.
The Globe-Democrat reporter, in copying from notes made during his interview with Felix McLemore, was sadly out of time; but then he had been at the scene of carnage, and I suppose had caught the infection so it will have to be excused. Felix is well known in this county and wants it distinctly understood that he emphatically denies having once said, "I can prove this and so." He told the reporter from the beginning that he knew nothing about it only what his family and friends had told him; he was not home at the time, and only stayed a short time when he did go. He made no allusions as to his dead brother's families being dependent on him for a support. Everyone in that mob knew Thad McLemore was the father of six children, all under twelve years of age, and left without a maintenance. The part referred to where Thad had a conversation with Goodman and Fitzpatrick is all wrong. Felix has the letter now which my husband wrote him after the death of Heffington, containing the substance of what he related to the reporter. He is not staying from home through any fears of killing or being killed. He is a living flesh and blood man, with perfect organization and, it is presumable, he has the power of feeling. I can establish all and more than is contained in this article and earnestly request that you give it publication.
Melba Gene McLemore writes "A three day search in Oct. 2000 of the Bastrop Co. Courthouse records, index books and court jackets produced no record of Wright ever being charged with cattle theft as reported in newspapers. Wright is buried along with his brother Thaddeus Koesko McLemore in unmarked graves in the Baker Hill Cemetery which is on private property in McDade Texas. His brother Thad was married to Texana BAKER and this small cemetery is a family plot with graves mostly belonging to Baker family members. The cemetery is not visible from any road and when I (Melba) visited Baker Hill I spent several hours finding some local who knew where to find this family cemetery & was told at the time of my visit (2001) that some of hte local women had taken it upon themselves to clean up the cemetery and it was fenced in with a sign on its gate. We drove miles thru pasture land on private property to find this old cemetery. Local resident Buddy Lewis graciously drove me thru pastures on land of Kastner's to the Cemetery."

Young followed his brother Atkins westward. After buying 100 acres from Atkins in 1753, then selling 100 acres to Edward Robertson with Atkins in 1755, Young also began operations in Granville County, buying 275 acres there on both sides of Shocco Creek by deed witnessed by his brother.
Sept. 18, 1759 - Littlebury Swinney also White, aged 9 yrs May 15, 1759, bound to Young McLemore "to learn the business of a Planter and to have a years Schooling", said McLemore "at the time of his freedom" agrees to give him "a young Horse Bridle & Saddle & decert suit of Cloaths." (Source: Bastardy Bonds from Granville County, N.C., 1749-1780, as transcribed at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgranvi/other/bas-bond.htm)
Young remained for a time, however, in Northampton County, serving in 1760 in that county's militia as a private in the cavalry troop of Capt. Henry Dawson. He was granted, also in 1760, 640 acres on both sides of Flat Creek in Granville County, and from then on made his home there. He picked up an additional 543 acres at the head of Shocco Creek, near his earlier tract, in February 1762.
Within three months, in May 1762, Young sold 200 acres on the north side of Shocco Creek, adjoining Ward and Macon. He was joined in this deed by his wife, Lucy. Thereafter, his lands seem to share a jurisdictional history similiar to Atkins', being found first in Granville County (where Young witnessed two deeds in 1763), then in Bute County (where he also witnessed a deed in 1766), then in Warren County (where he picked up four extra acres on the South Side of Sandy Creek in 1779), and finally in Franklin County where both he and his son Young Jr. were heads of household in the first U.S. Census of 1790.
On the last day of 1803, Young McLemore signed his will, and it was probated in Williamson County in April 1804. His principal legatees were his daughter Sukey GRAY and her children, though he mentioned another granddaughter as well. He is also known to have had at least two sons, Young Jr. and Nathaniel. His wife, Lucy died shortly before he did in 1803.

Robert McLemore Butler notes show that a Phillemon McLemore was born in 1796, a Priscilla McLemore was born in 1807, and a Sally McLemore was born in 1809, all to a Young McLemore living in New Hanover, North Carolina.
Said by Tom Heselting to have been "born 9 March 1783, married Nancy PLUMLEE, moved to Illinois." Said by some, including Tom, to have the middle name ATKINS.
A photo of his tombstone is on findagrave.com. It is inscribed Young McLemore, Died Feb. 20, 1841 aged 57 years, 9 months and 11 days. Based on the date of death inscribed on his tombstone, plus the his age at death, he would have actually been born May 9, 1783.
There is also some unsourced biographical detail on the findagrave website, as follows:
Young married Nancy Ann Plumley abt 1811 in Knox Co., TN.
They had 5 (sic) children; John, Priscilla, William, Abigail (Archibald???) and Mary Ellen.
Young was a farmer. In Sept of 1835 he purchased 40 acres of land in Sangamon Co., IL 17N-5W section 27. In Sept 1839 he purchased an additional 40 acres 17N-5W section 29.

I received this article from my mother, Kathryn McLeod, granddaughter of A.N. McLeod on August 18, 2000.
In the STRIFFLER-BENKELMAN BROADCAST, Volume 8, September 3, 1945, in the column on page 2 titled "Around the World With Our Service Boys" it was written that "Don McLeod is located in the Pacific Area. The following year's newsletter, Volume 9, September 2, 1946, in a column titled "Our Service Men Who Have Returned Home", it was noted that Donald McLeod had returned to his home in Detroit.

Third Death in the Family
Father, son and mother pass away within eight months
Mrs. Mary McVannel, who has been seriously ill with typhoid fever, the past three weeks at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jane Leitch, died Wednesday afternoon.
For the third time in a little more than six months, the home of Mrs. Leitch has been visited by the death angel; the first to be taken away was her aged father, Archie McVannell, who died October 25, 1906, after a protracted illness. The next was her brother, Daniel McVannell, who died April 19, from typhoid fever, having contracted the disease while working in Port Huron. The mother was taken sick about a week after his death, and on Wednesday passed away. The home is indeed grief stricken and saddened one by the losses it has sustained through these deaths.
Mrs. McVannel was a woman of beautiful character and a member of the Presbyterian church. Although she has not resided in our midst very long, and sickness in her family has necessarily kept her at her home, yet a number have learned to know her and found in her the personification of a righteous life.
Mary McMillan was born in Scotland, sixty-four years ago, in Argyleshire. Three years later with her parents she emigrated to Canada, settling near West Lorne, Ontario, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage in 1863 to Archie McVannel and they resided in Ontario until about two years ago, when they came to Cass City to visit their daughter, Mrs. Leitch, Mr. McVannel being in poor health at the time.
He was taken worse soon after his arrival here and was never able to return home. Mr. McVannel returned to Ontario after the death of her husband, and when her son Daniel, was taken ill, she came back here to assist in caring for him, and contracted the disease from which she never recovered. She leaves a family of five grown children, two sons, Peter and Duncan, both of this place, and three daughters, Mrs. John Templeton of West Lorne, Ont., Mrs. Sloan of Northwest Canada, and Mrs. Jane Leitch of this place. Four brothers, Dougald, Duncan and Daniel, of Rodney, Ont., and John McMillan of Northwest Canada, and four sisters Mrs. John McCallum of Novesta township, Mrs. Graham of Highgate, Ont., and Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Gilles of near Rodney, Ont. also survive her.
The funeral services will be held at the residence this (Friday) afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. E. H. Bradfield officiating. It is expected that a number of relatives from Ontario will be in attendance.
The heartfelt sympathy of the entire community is extended to the grief stricken family.

Her FindAGrave memorial page, created by Annette Epps Alva, links her to her father, John Hamilton McNairy (1804-1853) and notes her mother was Sarah Leatherman McNairy.
Annette adds that I have received information stating that Francis must have changed the spelling of her last name from McNairy to McNary. She is listed in the will of John McNairy as an heir.
The memorial page for her father, John Hamilton McNairy, notes that he was born to Robert and Anne Hamilton McNairy [According to a historical marker he was born in Guilford Co, NC]. His first marriage about 1827 in Tennessee was to Miss Sarah "Sallie" Leatherman, who died by 1840.
John left Giles County, Tenn. about 1836 or 1837. He is shown single with 6 children in the 1840 census of Tippah County, Miss. From there he moved to Texas. John and Susanah Runnels (1824-1893) married about 1842 in Shelby County. Susanah was the daughter of Henry H. Runnels (1795-1843) & Margaret Smith Runnels (1800-1896).
John McNairy became known as Colonel following his involvment with the Moderator and Regulator conflict in Shelby County. He was appoointed to represent the Moderators in settlement negotiations. John bought one thousand acres of land with John Thomas Collier on July 7, 1847. He was elected State Representative at the first regular election in Upshur County on August 7, 1848, and served until 1850.
