17106 I27302  McLemore  Weakley Mason  10 Jun 1876  Mar 1965  His application for a Social Security Account Number contained the following information:

Weakley Mason McLemore 410 Malinson Street Starke, Florida, married to Lucille PARKER [Perhaps a second wife?]. Not employed. Age 64. DOB 6-10-1876 Birmingham, Alabama. Father Dave McLemore. Mother Nina Weaver.

17107 I36525  McLemore  Wesley  Abt 1802  Yes, date unknown  Ann and Eldon McLemore say that he was born in Barnwell Co, SC, to John McLemore and Winnie Baltice, and show his siblings as Reuben McLemore, Matthew McLemore, Dorcus McLemore, John McLemore and Robert McLemore.

Reuben, Matthew and Dorcus, close in age to Wesley, were in Copiah County, MS versus Scott County, MS, at the time of the 1850 and/or 1860 census. Copiah is not adjacent to Scott County, but is nearby. They were all close in age to Wesley, and all born also born in South Carolina.

It is possible they are siblings, or otherwise related to Wesley, but this has not been proven. There is also no proof of who his parents might be.

John McLemore was also in Scott County, MS at the time of the 1850 census, and also born in South Carolina. However he is 21 years younger than Wesley. If related, he could be a much younger brother, or even a son or nephew. Again, no proof has been found linking John to either parents or siblings.

Ann and Eldon McLemore further note that he married Mahaly in 1811 in South Carolina, was said to be listed on the 1845 census of Rankin Co, MS, and that Wesley and Mahala Ann McLemore sold land in Scott Co, MS to Wm. A. Hutson on 21 Jan 1859. Both signed with their mark.

The marriage date of 1811 must be incorrect based on the ages of Wesley and Mahala.

17115 I21648  McLemore  William  Between 1715 and 1720  Abt 1788  James McLemore, III narrows the range of his date of birth to between 1719-1725

William MACKLEMORE Jr., brother of Wright and Richard, son of William and grandson of James and Fortune, apparently stayed in (or more accurately returned to) Virginia to form a minor line of Virginia McLemores near to his cousins, the family of his Uncle John MACKLEMORE. He probably continued to occupy this patented land of his brother Wright after the latter moved down to Edgecombe County, North Carolina, about 1750. The first record of a Willam MACKLEMORE in Virginia is in 1750, as witnesss to a deed from William SPENCE to his daughter Elizabeth MACKLEMORE, wife of John MACKLEMORE, JR. Whether this is William Sr. or William Jr. is unknown.

However, it is hypothesized that William MACKLEMORE Sr. probably stayed in Virginia until his father's (James, the immigrant) died in 1734/1735. About the time of James's death, William's oldest son Wright was patented his land in Virginia, and William was probably instrumental in getting this land for his son who was then not much older than the required age of 21. Then William and his younger sons moved down into North Carolina to live on the Mosley patent devised him by his father. William probably died about 1750 or shortly before, for Wright suddently appears on William's land in Edgecombe County at that time, and as oldest son he would have inherited it under the laws of primogeniture, William Sr. leaving no will.

Younger son William Jr. would have then probably moved back to Virginia to own (?) or at least operate Wright's patented plantation. (James L. McLemore, III, p 51).

William Jr. is shown in only three of four other records. The first was as a witness to a deed of "acquitaner" and a companion deed involving Thomas Turner recorded May 9, 1776; the second was his name listed as a tax payer in Southampton County in 1782 (see Fothergill, VIRGINIA TAXPAYERS, 1782-1787); and the third was a lawsuit in Southampton County in which he was plantiff, which suit was dimissed following the defendant's death in 1788 (Southampton Order Book 8, p. 416). He was thus still alive, living in Virginia, until at least this latter date. (James L. McLemore, III, p 52).

17116 I21657  McLemore  William  Between 1732 and 1736  Between 1780 and 1782  James McLemore, III writes that . "Assuming William came with his father Wright to NC in 1750+/-, I assume his son William Jr. was born in Sampson Co., NC, but it's close enough that it could have been either Va. or NC. It was this William Jr. who I have as the ancestor of a lot/most? of the Johnson County NC family, of which our local high school principal Thomas McLemore is a member."

William McLemore was patented land (#2087) on 29 Oct 1772 in Duplin County (Bk 47, pg 94)...150 acres, grant #355, issued...entry #489, entered June 26, 1779, book #47, pg 94 -- E. side of Little Cohera. This later became part of Sampson County. (Courtesy of Robert McLemore Butler)

I have in my notes, unsourced, a reference to a deed between McLemore, William Grantee Book 6, Page 432 Deed Southey FISHER to William McLEMORE Dated 30 Nov 1779 30 pounds for 100 acres "on the side of little Cohary beg by marsh branch" Wit: John MORGAIN and Joseph FOULLER

17128 I27348  McLemore  William  4 Apr 1830  Yes, date unknown  Patricia Mills notes that he was married three times, (1) in 1850 to a LOUISINDA, (2) before 1860 to a Surancy, and (3) on 27 April 1871 to Martha Jane Coburn, by D.M. Cowley, Justice of the Peace. On the 1860 and 1870 census, it appears that his wifes name may be some variation of Lourany/Louvany instead of Surancy, and her age is consistent from 1850 through 1870. Perhaps Patricia was mistaken and he was only married twice, to Louisinda/Lourancy and later to Martha Jane COBURN.

A post by Steve Cranford on 20 May 2001 to the Ancestry.com Message Boards>Surnames>McLemore>McLemore Family history cited the Cranford family bible as follows:

"william McLemore b. 4-4-1830 (don't know for sure where but in the south) father of james R. mcLemore b. 9-6-1853"

STR06
17131 I28852  McLemore  William  Between 1832 and 1835  Yes, date unknown  Melba Gene McLemore believes he could have been born as early as 1821, and was likely a son of Abner McLemore (b. NC>Lawrence County, Alabama>Marion County, Alabama>Mississippi), based on both his name and on his proximity to Abner's family in Mississippi. Census records seem to put his date of birth later, sometime between 1832 and 1835.

Melba further speculates, but has not yet proven, that he married Ellcausey CALLAHAN. Two of Ellcausey's siblings married children of Abner McLemore, James Callahan to Lucretia Jane McLemore and Sterling McLemore to Malinda Callahan.

Could William have instead been the son of Joel McLemore and Robert Renfro of Tennesse? They had a son named William of approximately this same age, born in Tennessee.

BOTH Abner and Joel, the two likeliest candidates for being the father of this William, were sons of Sterling McLemore and Grandsons of Ephraim McLemore & Hannah (Hudspeth) McLemore.

Nan Kittell could find no further record of William McLemore after 1860, and presumed he did not survive the Civil War.

In the Fall 1998 issue of the Red River County Texas Genealogical Society, a list is included of "the John C. Burkes Camp # 656 of the United Confederate Veterans was established in Red River County, Texas in the summer of 1890. This organization met yearly, usually in August, on campgrounds that were located about one mile northeast of Clarksville. It eventually became a four or five day affair with dancing, ball games, food, music, carnival attractions and patriotic speeches. It disbanded after the last Confederate Veteran member died and the campground was sold June 23, 1942. The actual list was found in the RRCTGS files and was transcribed from original records that were in poor condition. The listing includes a W.H. McLemore

There is a William H. McLemore, parents unknown born, on a WorldConnect Tree on RootsWeb that is connected to Red River county. If the tree is accurate, he was actually born in Red River County versus Georgia, so he would not be the same William McLemore as our son of John and Sarah.

He is listed as William H. McLemore, head of household, in the 1870 census for Jasper Co., MO, age 27, born TX.

He is listed as W. H. McLemore, head of household, in the 1880 census for Red River Co., TX, age 37, born TX, father born VA, mother born AL.

He is listed as W. H. Mclemore, head of household, in the 1900 census for Red River Co., TX, age 57, born June 1843, married 33? year, born TX, father born VA, mother born AL.

There is at least one other William McLemore was was a veteran of the Civil War, as he is buried in Austin and not in the Woodland Graveyard in Norht Texas. Tom McLemore emailed Melinda Strong on June 9, 2003 that "Last week Bonnie and I were in Austin....(and) we stopped at the Texas State Cemetery which is on 7th Street, near downtown. There is a veteran of the Civil War by the name of William McLemore buried there in a section reserved for veterans of that war. I wonder if it might be the McLemore that Nan Kittrel mentioned to you. I don't remember any other details like date of death."

However, this William buried in Austin could be yet another William McLemore of around the same age as the William McLemore who was a son of John and Sarah (Morgan) McLemore.

William McLemore
William McLemore, 63, lifetime Princeton resident died Sunday at 6:15 p.m. in Gibson General Hospital after a short illness. Mr. McLemore was born February 28, 1906 in Temple, Ind. in Crawford County. He had been a Cab driver for City Cab the past 20 years. He attended the House of Prayer. Mr. McLemore was member of VFW 1147 and a Veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Laura McLemore; one daughter, Mrs. Anita Beard of Princeton; two sons, Jim McLemore and William Shoulders both of Princeton; one brother, Guy McLemore of Oak Ridge, Tenn. and 2 grandchildren. Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Colvin Chapel with Rev. James Miller officiating. Friends may call at Colvin & Son Mortuary after 3 p.m. Tuesday.

On his application for a Social Security account, completed on August 27, 1937, he listed his date of birth as February 28, 1907 in Temple, Indiana. It is assumed this date is more accurate, as it was completed by William himself, than the date in his obituary. His parents were shown as Wright McLemore and Sarah Longust. His employer at that time was Thomas Christian of Princeton.

Abner later moved to Marion County, Alabama, and late still to Mississippi. Both Abner and William reported themselves as shoemakers at the time of the 1860 federal census.

Rosemary Hollis indicates that his mother's first name was Lucinda.

William and both his wives are said to be buried in unmarked graves at the McLemore Cemetery in Lawrence County, Alabama.

17148 I38607  McLemore  William Anthony  10 Feb 1888  25 May 1953  Place of birth, according to his application for a Social Security accounty, was Cameron, OK. He showed this same location when he registered for the World War II draft, as a resident of Sallison, OK. This draft registration also named Lucile Myers, of Bokoshe, OK, as the "person who will always know your address." Anthony indicated he worked for himself.

His FindAGrave memorial page, created by Frances Allen Titsworth, links him to his spouse, Bessie Elizabeth McLemore (1898-1983), with whom he shares a double marker. When his widow, Bessie, applied for his military marker she also showed that he was a Gunners Mate, 1rst class, and had enlisted on 9 May 1917 and was discharged 20 Dec 1918. Bessie showed her residence as McCurtain, OK, presumably wher Anthony died.

Anthony also has a miltary marker, inscribed with a cross, and the following:

17150 I36341  McLemore  William Armstead  1 Oct 1878  19 May 1949  John Ellington writes that "My grandfather William Armstead McLemore Born October 1, 1878 Lavina, Tn. Died May 19, 1949 in Memphis buried in Jackson, Tn. Hollywood Cemetery. He was married twice:

Katie Laura Rogers in Lavina, Tn. And remarried 8 years after her death to Gladys Gertrude Pearcy (dau of William Pearcy and Rosa Haney).

William's mother died when he was 8 yrs old and was raised by his dad till his death when William was in his teens. I have a deal more on their children of which my mom is the last surviving of her brother and sisters.

John Ellington writes William's father was "John Armstead McLemore (my great-grandfather)....He was married to Maggie Mathis and Mary Matthews. He and Mary had one child. "

This is the same information shown on his FindAGrave memorial page.

Mark Freeman shows him as the same person as the John A. McLemore, born ca 1845, to Abraham McLemore and Permelia Jane Camp. He also indicates that he might instead be named William Armistead McLemore. He married Mary "Nannie" MATHEWS.

Based on the ten year gap in age it is not proven these John A. McLemore's, born in Tennessee, are indeed the same person.

17168 I38433  McLemore  William Homer  31 May 1915  26 Feb 2012  The Janke Tree at WorldConnect shows that he married Joy PERA on 25 Nov 1946, and that they had two children.

William H. "Mac" McLemore was born in Portland, OR on May 31, 1915. He attended St Joseph's Military Academy in Rio Vista and Burlingame High School. Mac entered the Navy in 1934 serving aboard the USS Augusta, part of the Asiatic Fleet and skippered by, then, Capt. Chester Nimitz. He maintained that being on the Augusta with Nimitz was the best education he ever had. He was discharged from the Navy in 1937, and reenlisted for WWII. Mac was then assigned to PT Base Ron 4 which moved to various islands in the South Pacific before he was assigned to PT 121. PT 121 was destroyed by friendly fire on March 27, 1944. Mac and his surviving shipmates evaded capture after the sinking by standing on the reef of a nearby enemy held island for 5 hours before being rescued. Mac was then re-stationed on PT Base Ron 4.

Mac had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to tell stories about his time in the Navy and about the various jobs he held over his lifetime. He worked for GTE Sylvania for over 20 years until his retirement in 1980.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joy, his daughters Joy (Gary Rabins), Jeanne (Gary Roberts), grandchildren Ellen & David Roberts and cousin Camille Whitaker.

Services will be held Tuesday March 6, 2012 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in San Jose at 11:00 AM.

The 1880 census shows that W. K. McLemore was born in North Carolina. John Simpson McLemore, buried near him in the Holly Springs Cemetery in Van Zandt county, instead reports his fathers place of birth as Mississippi in 1880 and as Tennessee in 1900. And J. M. McLemore, who is likely son James Madison McLemore, reports in 1880 that his father was born in Indian Territory, but later reports North Carolina.

Peggy Stewart Gore also shows William Kearney McLemore as being born in Tennessee.

He was predicted to be in the I1 haplogroup, the most common group in Scandanavia. However, he does not currently have any matches among the other 15 members with the McLemore surname in the study. It is possible that there were several founding McLemore lines, instead of just one as has been long assumed. Or another possibility could be that undisclosed adoptions have occurred through the generations of descendants of both James and/or Abraham.  STR06
17175 I34415  McLemore  William Lee  23 Aug 1874  Yes, date unknown  He completed an application for a social security account on November 30, 1936 as a resident of Meridian, Mississippi. 17177 I32550  McLemore  William N.  4 May 1873  17 Dec 1947  Middle name said to be Newton.

Assumed, but not proven, to be a brother of John C. McLemore, the husband of Medina Loue "Dena" Swindle? They lived near each other at the time of the 1900 census, and were listed as adjacent families as of the 1910 census. Both census enumerations were in Walker County, Alabama.

The transcribed info on his FindAGrave memorial page instead has his year of birth as 1873. A photo of his marker shows this same year of birth, and also has an inscription indiciating he was a member of the Church of Christ for 35 years.

The Alabama, Deaths and Burial Index, 1881-1974 shows that Willie N. McLemore, born ca 1873 and died 17 Dec 1947 in Carbon Hill, Fayette, Alabama was the son of Frank and Martha McLemore.

Could this couple be his parents?

Mark Freeman has him born ca 1842, however, this contradicts both the 1850 and 1860 census. It appears he was born in 1852. He must have been very young when entered the Civil War, perhaps in the last days of that war.

17192 I25558  McLemore  William Sugars  1 Feb 1830  7 Aug 1908  The biography below is courtesy of Mark Freeman. It includes excerpts from a Biographical sketch in Goodspeed's Tennessee History, Williamson County, pages 996 and 997.

"At seventeen years of age he entered Transylvania University at Lexington, Ky., and in 1849 he entered Lebanon Law School, where he graduated in 1851. In the same year he began to practice in Franklin, and in 1856 was elected county court clerk, and held this office until 1860, when he declined re-election and resumed the practice of law. In 1861 he enlisted in Company F, Fourth Tennessee Cavalry . . . " Transylvania University records show William S. McLemore in the 1847-1848 academic index as a member of the Adelphi Society (a literary society). William S. McLemore, Esq. is listed as a candidate for Attorney General for the district composed of Williamson, Davidson, and Sumner counties.

Editor of the Western Weekly Review newspaper in Franklin in 1861. From the Williamson County Circuit Court Minute Books Vol. 15: Monday 15, July 1861 court met according to adjourment. Present the Hon. Nathaniel Baxter, Judge. The Attorney Gen. of this Judicial District being absent, the court appoints William S. McLemore, Attorney General pro tem who appears in court and accepts of said appointment and having taken an oath to support the Constitution of the Confederate States of America and the Constitution of Tennessee and the oath of an Attorney General entered on the duties of his appointment.

A detailed account of Company F is provided in "The Williamson County Cavalry" by Michael Cotten, 1994. According to Thenie's diary he had 3 horses shot from under him during the war. One was at Thompson Station when he was shot through the canteen. John Rucker has the canteen with the bullet entry and exit holes. William S. McLemore was elected 1st Lieutenant of the Williamson County Cavalry shortly after the formation of the unit at Carnton, near Franklin, on 28 Sep 1861. He eventually commanded the 4th Tennessee Cavalry, and ended the war in command of a brigade. The 4th Tennessee fought under Forrest, and in all the major engagements of the Army of Tennessee. W.S. was in temporary command of the regiment as a Captain during the capture of Streight's raiders in Apr - May of 1863, COL Starnes being absent due to illness. He assumed command of the regiment 1 Jul 1863 after COL Starnes was killed at Tullahoma. Col. W.S. McLemore commanded a brigade of cavalry in President Davis's escort when they were captured at Washington Georgia 9 May 1865. The regimental colors of the 4th Tennessee were cut into pieces and divided among the couriers and staff of Colonel McLemore. "Dibrell's Old Flag was not Surrendered" by C.L. Nolen published in the "Confederate Veteran". Goodspeed's (con't): In 1865 he returned home and immediately began the practice of law, which he continued until 1972 when he was elected criminal judge. In 1878 he was elected circuit judge of the Ninth Judicial Circuit.

The autobiography of Albert Sydney McLemore, USMC as well as Thenie's diary give accounts of the election and as W.S. as judge. W.S. McLemore's gavel and certificate as judge are in the Rucker law office on the square in Murfreesboro. In the settlement of a suit by G.A. Pope against John Dabney McLemore et al John Dabney McLemore is represented by the firm of McLemore, Bond, and Wallace. They request a fee of $300 for the suit. It was submitted 22 Apr 1869. Burke Bond is the step son of Barbara McLemore, W.S. McLemore's sister.

From: Century Review of Maury County 1805-1905 page 16&17 "Circuit Court . . . Wm. S. McLemore, 72 (1872), for six years as special judge for criminal cases" Trustee of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Franklin. On the board of advisors for the Tennessee Female College in Franklin, 1885-1886. See Thenie's diary for a copy of his speech at her commencement. From a letter from Aunt Dorothy to Albert S. McLemore, a copy which Harriet Hough provided me: "I must tell you my favourite story about my grandfather: one day a Nashville girl came out to visit and he was delegated to drive her around and show her the countryside. He became fed up with her hoity-toity airs and citified questions and, when she pointed to some negro women hoeing cotton and asked what they were doing, he replied "oh, they're just hoers" - maybe the Scottish McLemores were lairds or thanes, but William Sugars was an earthy man!

The Whartons were intellectuals, which helps the family tree - and the Dabneys were aristocracy - but I don't know just where they fit in."
