It is assumed that Mariah is the daughter of Abner McLemore, due to her proximity to Abner's sons on the 1860 through 1900 Calhoun County, Mississippi census, and the fact that a McLemore was living with her family in 1880. However the transcription of her marriage record shows her last name as Lemon, and further shows her as being born in South Carolina. Therefore more work should be done to proof or disprove this connection.
Another Mariah McLemore could instead be Abner's daughter. This second Mariah McLemore was born ca 1835 and married Charles Pinckney Campbell on 6 Oct 1861 in Lawerence County, Mississippi. The Mariah that married Charles Campbell is an ancestor of Lisa Coker Thigpen. (LisaHeb138@aol.com).

Mark Freeman has her DOB as after 1751 in Bute Co., N.C. She and John Nicholson were the parents of 11 children.
Lynda Huckaby Bishop emailed, in January 2009, that:
"I noticed your McLemore ancestry online. My grandmother (I don't know how many greats) was Frances Nicholson Williams. I believe she was the daughter of Atkins Nicholson, grandson of Atkins McLemore (?) and Betsy Knott. The only proof of that connection I can find is in the Maury County history book in TN. So much of that was incorrect. I was wondering if you have any Nicholson genealogy you would share.

Melba Gene McLemore shows that she married James R. BROWN.
Foide Williams, in a post to the McLemore Family Genealogy Forum, writes that: "The 1820 census of Lincoln Co, Tn (pg 14) shows Sterling C. McLemore and (pg 30) Signer Allen (who married Rebecca McLemore), Benjamin Wright (who married Hannah McLemore), James R. Brown (who married Martha McLemore), and Joel McLemore. These are all from Fayette Co, KY and apparently traveled together to Lincoln Co, TN."
Melba Gene McLemore thinks it POSSIBLE the census listing b
elow is that of Martha McLemore Brown. There are several significant differences that need to be resolved before assuming this with certainty. (Name of Spouse, place of birth, relationship of Martha to the older Augustine Clayborne of Virginia in the same home, etc)

At the time of the 1870 census, she was no longer listed in her parents home. She may have died, married, or *might* be the Martha McLemore that was listed as a housekeeper in the home of 72 year old Rachel Fowler. She would have been about 34 at the time, however, and Rachel's housekeeper was only listed as age 25.

Dave Britt wrote, on February 17, 2002, on the Maddox McLemore Descendants MSN group:
"Starting from where we're common, Joel McLemore and Rachel Stinson had a buncha kids, your Henry and my Martha C. McLemore. Martha married Michael B. Maben (11/12/1857) and had three children: Sarah A. b1861, Margaret Elizabeth (Lizzie) b. 8/22/1864 and Ulyssus b.1869.
Lizzie Maben married Sebran A. Britt (1/11/1884) and they had 9 children. The family lived in and around 'Bucksville' KY (aka 'Gasper' - Auburn, P.O. - Route #2). Anyway, child #8 was my Grandpa - he was born 'Hubert' but everyone called him Pete. Pete married Birtie Mae Powell (Mae) and they had a handful of children, all still living. The oldest of these is my Dad, Leon. There is another tie to the McLemore family from the Britt family, too. Sebran had a younger brother named George (Washington) Britt. He married the granddaughter of James McLemore (Martha's and Henry's brother), Frances Elizabeth (Aunt Betty) McLemore. Her dad was John J McLemore who was married a number of times I understand. Aunt Betty lived across the street from my Grandparents, and I knew her as a boy."
Cole Shoaf (blazerman1@email.msn.com) shows that she was born 10 July 1810 in Burke County, North Carolina, and died 8 May 1876 in Pickway County, Ohio. He further indicates that she and Harmonas Alkire were married on 31 Dec 1829 in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois.

His Texas Death certificate listed his occupation as "Variety Store", and also showed he was a veteran of World War II. On his FindAGrave memorial page, created by Julie Karen Hancock, it is further shown that he was a "MSGT Ordinance Department." He shares a double marker with wife, Hortense. Her maiden name and dates were not yet engraved.
Listed by Mark Freeman, but not James L. McLemore. She is also omitted from the HISTORY OF CARROLL COUNTY, TENNESSEE, p. 257, in the transcription of her fathers will. Appears to have died prior to the death of her father?
This widow, Mary McLemore, was a South Carolinian, the daughter of James McLemore (died 1796), son of Joel MacLemore (1739/40-1795), the son of John Macklemore. She was thus probably Harrison's third cousin. She qualified on Harrison's intestate estate on July 22, 1822, with Richard Harrison and Alexander Peete as her sureties (Southampton Order Book 16, p. 19), filed her inventory and appraisal of his estate on October 21, 1822 (Southampton Order Book 16, p. 133), and won a law suit in her fiduciary capacity on the same date (October 20, 1823) as she bound out her son. (James L. McLemore, III, p 52).
Was said to have married first William COURTNEY on 25 Dec 1825, Lawrence County, Mississippi and then to a Mr. LEWIS sometime after 1830, also in Lawrence County.
Not sure if she was a daughter, or second wife, to Raiford. Not listed in the 1864 Division of Lands of Raiford McLemore, unless she was also called Susannah, or she may have died prior to 1864.
Is this the Mary McLEMORE that married Wm H. Plumlee on 6 Apr 1854 in Knox County, TN? Could he have been her cousin, William H. Plumlee, the son of Nancy McLemore and William Plumlee of Knox County?

General Petition Information
Abstract:Eighteen-year-old Polly McLemore Perkins and her husband, William O. Perkins, seek a partition of the slaves remaining in the estate of her late father, Robert McLemore. They inform the court that McLemore's will directed that his slaves be divided among his widow and his children, three of whom are still minors. The Perkinses cite that the slaves were "to be divided when your petitioner Polly M should arrive at the age of eighteen years and should marry." They also note that the widow's "interest in all of said slaves" has been set aside and that Polly is of age and married. Of the belief that they "are entitled under said will to five seventeenths of the value of said slaves," the petitioners pray the court to "order a division of said slaves ... to be made & appoint commissioners to divide the same & set apart to your petitioners five seventeenths of the value thereof."

In a letter dated 22 October, 1994, Elizabeth Gill wrote:
"My husband's grandmother was a McLemore. She had a brother, John T. born in 1846 in Texas. They lived in Timpson, Shelby Co. Her father was Adkin. This grandmother was widowed after the Civil War. I have a newspaper clipping stating that her husband, William H. DARNELL died in 1866. She had another child (of doubtful parentage) in 1873. Her obituary (1919) states explicitly that Mr. Darnell died in 1873. She later remarried a COOPER and died in Oklahoma."
Diana Noel shows this second spouse as John COOPER, born 1837 in Texas.
Daniel Creel posted the following message to the McLemore-L message boards:
Research of my son-in-law's lineage leads to Mary A. McLemore, 7-23-1843 Shelby Co., TX, to 5-22-1919 Weatherford, Custer Co., OK.
She is identified by records as a daughter of W. Adkin McLemore, c1806 GA to 2-16-1881 Shelby Co., TX, and Susan A. Brinson, c1817 GA to bef1870 Shelby Co., TX. She had 4 known siblings - Matthew William, James S., Elizabeth M. [???] and John T. McLemore.
Family oral tradition and photographs identify Native American lineage in Mary and any help would be appreciated with McLemore family history to identify this line.

Her Death Certificate shows her as Mrs. Mary Bell McLemore Pate, born in Moore County, NC. Her father's name was shown as "don't know" and mother as "Martha Black." She was a widow. Informant was Mr. Norwood Pate of West Columbia, S.C.
from "One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Mason City, Illinois 1857-1982", published by the Quasquicentennial Historical Committee, 1982.
Page 33: "Miss Miss Mamie McLemore was librarian in 1914 and 1915, when with the help of Miss Ruby Aubere, the Havana librarian, the books was reclassified and a regular library system employed."
She appears to have cared for her parents, and at the age of 54 was still single and living with her widowed father. She worked in sales and as a clerk at various stores, and as of the 1930 census was serving as a county probation officer in Mason County, Illinois.

On the 1910 census she indicated she had given birth to 13 children in total, but only 7 were still living. Daughter Lue Ella died in 1899, the names of her other deceased children are unknown. They appear to have died at a very young age as their are only 9 children that have been identified through census or vital records.

Who are her parents? Based on the location of her marriage and her age, she could be a daughter of Ephraim McLemore and Hannah Hudspeth. However, there is no indication that they had a daughter named Mary, unless she is actually the daughter called "Sally McLemore" in a transcription of Ephraim's Will.
James McKinney writes that Ephraim's eldest son, Sterling, paid taxes on 200 acres of land on Skaggs Creek as early as 1806, and may have been there earlier. McKinney also writes that in April 1805, William Bethuram , a neighbor of Sterling's, married a "Sarah McLemore. It is not known if this was Sterlings' youngest sister, Sally, or a daughter of Sterling's."
She is listed a mary Kelley (Polley?) age 21 on the 1880 Dade county, MO census, in the home of her parents. No spouse or children are listed with her.
Not shown as a child of Moses McLemore by the Rev. William P. McLemore, family archivist. Mark Freeman shows that she married (1) Isam LEWIS in Copiah County, Mississippi and later married (2) H.C WOODS on 20 Dec 1853.
Bonnie Seiler shows that she married Alexander SMITH on 20 October 1868 in Cumberland County, NC

Victoria Mclemore writes: "Mamie lived with her sister until her death. My husband remembers her. My husband believes that neither one ever married or had children. The census document shows the same with them living with their mother until their later years. The sister Laura also had a nick name that she went by. My husband didn't know that they were sisters he just knew that they lived together and were elderly."
In another note she writes: "My husband said that Aunt Mamie and Aunt Dell live together and therefore we assume that Laura's nickname was Dell since he called them both Aunt. As mentioned before neither had been married to had any children to the best of his knowledge."
She lost her hearing as a result of a childhood illness. Family tradition says she named her children Beadie and Worth because these were the only names she could say. From the ANCESTORS OF STUART DAVID CHILDRESS.
She may have married a SEWELL after 1880. A death certificate can be found for Matilda Jane SEWELL, age 89 (born ca 1842) on Aug 12 in Moore County, N.C. Parents were listed as "not known." She died in McColl, S.C, a widow, of Pneumonia. Informant was J. T. Sewell of McColl. She was buried at the Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Matilda Jane's younger brother, Hayes McLemore, also was buried in McColl, South Carolina.
Shown by Ann and Eldon McLemore of Kansas as a son of John McLemore and Winnie Baltice, and sibling to Wesley, Rueben, Dorcas, John and Robert.
Instead shown by Mark Freeman and others as a son of Amos and Equilla McLemore.
It is assumed, based on the reasearch of Ann and Eldon McLemore, that he is likely a sibling of Reuben and Dorcus McLemore, also born in South Carolina within a few years of Matthew, and also living in Copiah County, Mississippi at the the time of the 1850 census. However, his parents have not been proven.
Ann and Eldon note that Rueben McLemore filed a bond for $16,000 in Copiah. Named on the bond were Elizabeth McLemore, Virginia Marsh, Mathew McLemore and Uriah Millsap, dated 5 Dec 1860. Signed by all except Virginia.
The 1860 Copiah County, Mississippi slave census shows that M. McLemore owned 8 slaves. Other slaveowners with the McLemore surname in Copiah County were John McLemore, with 1 slave, and Reuben McLemore, with 5.
Nicole Martin posted the following to the Genforum McLemore Surname board:
I have Reuben as son of John McLemore. Siblings, if correct, are Robert, Wesley,Reuben, Matthew, John, and Dorcus. There may be more sisters. I find John McLemore in Hinds County in 1830 and Rankin County in 1840. I believe he is the John McLemore listed in the 1810 and 1820 census in Barnwell District, SC. I also do not believe this is the son of Major John McLemore. I believe that his brothers (at least) were Howell and Matthew (see 1810 Barnwell Census). One of Matthew's grandsons, Howell W came to Hinds County to marry and then later returned to Barnwell. Later, Matthew's daughter Sarah Page moves to Copiah County. I believe Howell is the one that ended up in Emanuel County, GA.
