According to Robert McLemore Butler, he was Pvt 2nd Co A 2nd Artillery Regt during the Civil War. He was born ca 1843 in Sampson County and the son of Amos McLemore (b. 1813). Lofton enlisted July 15, 1862 in Wake County. He was wounded May 2, 1863 at Chancellorsville, Va. Reported absent for the next 11 months due to wounds. Discharged April 24, 1864 due to phthisis pulmonalis affecting both lungs. The Cumberland Plough Boys website instead shows that he servied in the North Carolina Regiment, 2nd Company E.
In 1869, Lofton was a witness, along with Zachariah ROYAL, to the Will of Zachariah ROYAL dated 28 Jun 1869. It was probated 12 Mar 1870. Zachariah's wife was Louisa ROYAL, and she was left the furniture, enough provisions for her support for one year and livestock...at her death to be divided equally between all five (5) children---Oliver ROYAL, Allen ROYAL, Rice ROYAL, Emely ROYAL and Nancy ROYAL. (Courtesy Robert McLemore Butler, who noted that Emily Royal was Lofton's wife).
After Lofton's death, his oldest sons, Edward and Amos, conveyed land they had inherited from him to their younger half brothers, O.B, Alvin and Dennis. As son Abner was not mentioned in the deed, it appears they may have died prior to its execution in 1910. Edward and and Amos's sister, Ida, was also not mentioned in the conveyence.

Ginger Riegel states that Louanna was also called "Lucy" and "Louie." She also indicates that Louanna: "Received $28 from her father after he passed away, and that she was listed in Raiford's will as "The Wife of Daniel Carter." At the time of the 1860 census, Louanna was living with her husband Daniel Carter in the household immediately preceding that of Raiford McLemore.
Is she a daughter of Raiford, or Granddaughter? Note the eight year gap in age between she and Amos. She was listed on the 1850 census in the household of Raiford McLemore, but not in the 1864 Division of the Lands of Raiford McLemore. Therefore, it is likely that she was either deceased or not an heir of Raiford, unless she was also called Susanna.
At the time of the 1870 census, she was living with Rachel (McLemore) and Thomas Smith, and listed as "Keeping House."
At the time he registered for the draft during World War I, he was a resident of Baton Rouge, LA, working in the process department of Standard Oil of Baton Rouge. He listed his nearest relatives as Mrs. Laura BREWSTER and Mrs. Quilla McLemore, Sisters, of ???? and Bonita, Mississippi.

Some transcriptions of the Taylor Cemetery instead listed her date of birth as 1850, but that appears to be an error as she was age 4 on the 1860 census.
Lawrence Boyd writes that she married twice, to Carl CUNNINGHAM and later Oral BOSWELL. She and Oral Boswell had one child. Paul Williams confirms her marriage to Oral BOSWELL.
The Texas Death certificate of her son, Edward, shows his mother as Mary Cammack. However, as of the 1900 census Joe King, along with his second wife, were living in Shelby County with M. E. McLemore, mother-in-law. This appears to be Matilda Page McLemore, age 63, born in South Carolina. Matilda was the mother of Mary McLemore Cammack, but Mary did not appear to have a son named Edward Warren King. It is likely that he death certificate was incorrect, and that Edward was a daughter of Matilda's youngest daughter, Lourena, who apparently had died sometime between Edward's birth in 1891 and the 1900 census.
Per Nan McCoy Kittell, Lucy had a daughter before she married Hank Votes. Her brothers paid to send her to Houston, where the baby was born. She placed the baby for adoption. Later in life, she searched for her child, but was never able to locate the child. This was confirmed by Hank Votes in 1982. She and Hank were unable to have children together, and he believed that Lucy "died of a broken heart."
Melba Gene McLemore notes she was buried in the Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, in Calhoun County, Mississippi. The dates were not shown on her tombstone.
Married to William Joseph AUSTIN of Smithfield and the mother of George Willis, Margaret Lee, and William Joseph AUSTIN, Jr.
Shown as Lucille McLemore Austin on her North Carolina Death Certificate. Margaret LeMaster was the information. Underwood-Smithfield was the funeral home, and she was cremated by the Goldsboro Cremation Services.
At the time of the 1940 Federal Census, she and her husband, Cecil B. SMITH, age 26, are living with her parents in Fairfield, Alabama.
Her FindAGrave memorial page, created by Gene Hill, has her obituary as follows:
Funeral for Lucille M. Smith, 86, of Decatur will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. R.A. Reinhardt officiating.
Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before services.
Mrs. Smith died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Summerford Nursing Home in Falkville. She was born April 22, 1916, in Moulton to Walter McLemore and Della McCulloch McLemore. She owned and operated Patterson's Men's Store in Decatur Shopping Center. She was a member of Beltline Church of Christ. She was the widow of Cecil B. Smith and the sister of the late J.T. McLemore and the late Price McLemore.
Survivors include one daughter, Elesia Reinhardt of Decatur; four sisters, Myrtle Dutton and Katie White, both of Falkville, Audrey Rogers of Decatur and Dorothy Parvin of Detroit; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Scott Reinhardt, Doug Rogers, Ray Dearman, Jack Moody, Phillip Watkins and Duane Smith.

Sometimes her date of birth is shown as in 1833, as is the death certificate below. It is more likely to be 1838 per her age on various census enumerations and as Rosa McLemore Dunkerly shows that Wright, born in 1835, was the eldest child of Keton McLemore and Rebecca Harrelson.
Lucretia was married first to George Stedham, who died in 1876, and shortly after his death, she married Joseph Albert OEMISCH
However, she was still listed as Lucretia STEDHAM on subsequent census enumerations. Lucretia's sister, Rosa McLemore Dunkerly, said that Lucretia's "2nd husband Joe Eomish---went away, never heard of, 1 child Paul"
Rosa also notes that Lucretia had six children, two of whom died in infancy.
Norma Smith provided El Paso City Directory lisitngs from 1914-1920, and Lucretia J Stedman, the widow of Geo B, is shown as a nurse and living at 507 Tornillo.

Never married. She was said to have been thrown from a horse as a girl and permanently crippled. In her father's obituary, she is listed as of Statesboro, Georgia.
(Research):Lucy's father died without a will shortly after she was born. Apparently David M. MASON was initially appointed the child's legal guardian, as he filed an accounting for his tenure as such from 1828 to the mid 1830's (Greensville Will Book 5, p. 474); he had been security on Claiborne and Sarah's marriage bond. Then Clifton HARRISON (apparently Lucy's uncle) became her guardian for a brief time before his own death in the mid to late 1837; Harrison's estate was committed to the hands of the sheriff for administration, and the sheriff was order to "render before Master COBB and account of said Clifton's guardianship of Lucy Ann McLEMORE"; this order was entered November 30, 1837 (Southampton Order Book 18, p. 345). Finally Francis Y. JONES, husband of Lucy's aunt Julia, was appointed on April 4, 1842 (Greenville Will Book 6, p. 139), showing payment of the remaining funds on hand to Willam M. EVERETT to whom Lucy was married pursuant to a marriage bond issued January 17, 1842 (with JONES as security on their bond-Southampton Marriage Register, pp. 515,725). (James L. McLemore, III, pp. 67, 68).
A resident of Baton Rouge and former resident of Vidor, TX she died in Baton Rouge at 6 pm on Sunday, December 16, 2012. She was 85 and a native of Stephenson, MS and a retired Coburn Supply data processing clerk. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd, on Wednesday, Dec. 19th, from 10 am until religious services at 1 pm Rev. Preston Thompson. Graveside services will be held at Restlawn Memorial Park in Vidor, TX at 11 am on Thursday, Dec. 20th. She is survived by two sisters, Mildred Terry and Elizabeth Cox and husband Otis; brother, David McLemore and wife Nancy; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. Ernestine was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Leigh Francis; parents, Richard Leon McLemore and Hattie Corban McLemore; and a brother, Richard Leon McLemore, Jr. She was a member of Redeemer Baptist Church. After their marriage they were said to have traveled by convered wagon to Texas to live near relatives there for about a year. Luther had great looking crops coming in just fine when a windstorm developed. After the storm was over everything in the field was browned like Autumn and all was lost. They decided right then that farming was much better back home in Monroe county, so they boarded a train and made the long trip home, never to leave again. It was while in Texas that Luther learned about cotton farming, knowledget that he brought back with him to Tennessee. He became the first cotton farmer in Monroe County, but neighbors soon followed suit.
At the time of the 1920 census, he was lviing in Crockett County, Texas, as a roomer in the home of Sam and Alice Smith. He was listed as age 29, single, and a leather worked at a saddle shop.
His Texas Death Certificate shows he was single, and a Saddler in the Saddle Business. He was shown as age 56, with the notation that his exact date of birth, and the name of his parents had been "unable to obtain." Informant was J. M. Dudley of Ozona, Texas. He was buried in Sulphur Springs.
Not living in the home of his father and stepmother at the time of either the 1900 or 1910 census. Dolores McLemore McKee says that he was raised by a Smith family after his mother died when he was still an infant.

"Other, less definitive evidence tends to indicated that John's other daughter, Lydia, married Robert MAGEE, who was subsequently appointed a guardian for a McLemore orphan (a daughter of Gilliam McLemore). (James L. McLemore, III, p. 58). Eldon and Ann McLemore of Derby, Kansas, also show her as marrying a MAGEE.
Jim White (jim4@whitesnet.net) indicates, that Lydia m: Robert LEWIS & died before 1820 Lincoln County North Carolina. Eldon and Ann McLemore of Derby, Kansas, also show that she married a LEWIS.
"He was raised around Rogersville, Ala. During the Confederate draft, he and others were held at a particular farm. All the prisoner "draftees" carried fodder from the barn to sleep on. Going upstairs, so the story goes, Mac threw his fodder down on the guard and headed for the Coldwater area. This is how the McLemores were supposedly established in Lincoln County. Mac was blind in later years and terrified of storms. Thunder would send him to hide in the basement." From the ANCESTORS OF STUART DAVID CHILDRESS

"One day [John McLemore]...was with his Uncle Maclin Bass McLemore in Rogersville. Maclin was a pilot on the Shoals. The Shoals, being a treacherous body of water and rapids, took a skilled person to navigate. That fateful day John and Maclin were captured by the army. Thinking John was too young (he was 15); he was told to go home and tell his aunt what had happened to her husband. Legend has it that Maclin was never heard from again." (The Heritage of Lauderdale County, Alabama, p. 347).
He built a dogtrot house with one side log and the other frame, surrounded by large trees and log dependencies in an ideal rural setting. When Maclin McLemore returned from the ardous task of piloting boats over the treacherouse Tennessee River Shoals, he liked to prop his feet up in comfort. He found that comfortable place in the story-and-a-half dogtrot house which he built around the time of his marriage in 1843. (The Lure and Lore of Limestone County, p. 147)

It is noted that Nancy and her children were ALSO enumerated on the Lauderdale County census dated 18 July 1870. Perhaps they lived on/near the border and were counted twice? Or lived part time in both locations? For whatever reason, here is the second listing. Note the slight difference in the children's ages, PLUS an additional child (Ulisses, female?, age 4) being shown:

She emailed, in February 2012, that George Robert Mclemore was born in 1882 in the South, sometime before 1920 he married Thula (Allie) Willis in OK. They had two children: my mother, Violet Modene Mclemore (April 8 1920 -May 20 1978) and Paul Levithan Mclemore (Sept 17 1924 - Apr 1974) both born in OK. After Thula (1892-1927) died he took the two chldren to Texas where they ended up in a children's home. George returned to OK. In 1946 George ended up in Western State Hospital for 11 years and is buried on there grounds. I have found him in the 1910 and 1920 census, but nothing else.

When he registered for the World War I Draft, he was Farming for his father. O. A. McLemore, in Hazelhurst, Miss. He was of medium heighth and build, with brown eyes and hair.
Cynthia Rudzis emailed, in May 2012, that Mamie Odessa McLemore married Richard Osborn McCarrell. The Texas Death certificate of her eldest child, Velma McCarrell Lakey, indicates she was born in Jackson County, Alabama.
She married second Henry MARKS, according to "The Heritage of Lauderdale County, Alabama (p. 346)."
The website titled "COUCH WHITAKER FAMILY of CHESTER CO., PA" has a Margaret McLemore of this age, born in Lincoln County, Tennessee, marrying Tilford PEGRAM, with them being the parents of some 13 children. It must have been a different Margaret McLemore.
Sherilyne "Sam" Palmer, who descends from a collateral line, writes that Margaret McLemore Henderson, dau of Joel McLemore and Rachel Stinson married second Francis Smith, a brother of Samuel Henry Smith the husband of Mary Elizabeth McLemore; (Margaret being a first cousin to Mary Elizabeth McLemore (dtr of John McLemore and Caroline Stevenson)); Francis was her 2nd marriage); Margaret was widow in 1880 census with 3 children listed, Josephus 8, Margaret 6, and Beauchamp 3. Francis and Margaret were in 1870 Census, Logan Co, KY under Household of John W. Lamb and wife Mary. Lambs were neighbors to Obediah Smith (Frank's father). I believe that if Goodwin McLemore's wife was Mary Lamb -- her relatives were the neighbors to the Smith's and were the ones who took Hiram McLemore as a boarder when his parents, John and Caroline, died. An A. J. Lamb was witness to marriage of Francis Smith and Margaret McLemore Henderson.
(Research):She married first John Calvin HENDERSON on 17 Apr 1850 in Sumner County, Tennessee. They were the parents of William, Dorinda and Joel. She married second Francis M. SMITH, on 18 Dec 1865 in Logan County, Kentucky. They were the parents of Rebecca, Hiram, Josephus, Margaret and Beauchamp. (From "The Families of Jeff and Debbie Woolard" tree at RootsWeb's WorldConnect).
At the time of the 1940 census, she was listed as widowed, and the head of household. Living with her were her daughter, son--in-law, and three grandsons. She died in 1941 in Memphis, Tennessee, at the Campbell Clinic. She had had an operation for a fractured left hip, but died of a coronary occlusion. She was shown as a resident of Greenwood, Mississippi. Informant was R J MOOR of Greenwood, Mississippi.
Her great-granddaughter indicates she was known by the nicknames of both "Maggie" and "Money."

JOHNSTON'S HOME-GROWN HISTORIAN STILL GOING AT 94
SMITHFIELD - Barbours, Woodalls and Creeches beware. If your kin hail from Johnston County - or even passed through in the last few centuries - Margaret Lee knows a thing or two about them. Lee is a walking storehouse of county history. For nearly 40 years, she has clipped newspapers and collected letters; wills and other family memorabilia that form the backbone of the genealogy collection at the Johnston County Heritage Center. Most counties have some kind of local history center; often tucked in the comer of a public library. But thanks largely to Lee, the Johnston Heritage Center boasts thousands of books, photos, microfilm and artifacts, all housed in a three-story building converted from a bank. At 94, Lee still spends about five hours a day, six days a week, at the center, helping people research their ancestry and clipping tidbits from old newspapers and other sources for her voluminous files. "She'd come Sunday if we were open," says the center's director, Wingate Lassiter. Lee says her fascination with history started when she was a child who kept a close eye on her neighbors in the Cleveland area of Johnston County. Her father was a country doctor. "My parents scolded me for being nosy," Lee says. "I think too much curiosity has paid off." Earlier this year, Lee was honored as one of 25 "Living Legends of Johnston County" for her contributions to preserving local history. Her knowledge of local families is also legendary. "She can tell you not only who they are and where they live, but when they came here and where they come from," says Grover Miller, a fellow volunteer at the center. Her blue eyes look for familiar features as soon as she meets someone new, and her first words are always the same: "What's your name?" She smiles knowingly as a red- haired young lady scours a pile of census records for information on her family, the Woodalls. Many county residents, including a county commissioner and the former health director, share the name. "She has the hair of a Woodall," Lee says. Cookie Pope, chairwoman of the Johnston County commissioners, got a lesson on her family history from Lee; to whom she is distantly related. Lee gave her a newspaper clipping recounting a moonshine still being found on the property of Pope's great-grandfather.
A doctor's daughter
Lee grew up in the Cleveland community, where her father, George Ammie Mclemore, traveled dirt roads treating patients, first in a horse and buggy and later by car. She planned to study at Women's College in Greensboro (now UNC-Greensboro) to become a teacher, but attended classes for only one year. She first postponed college because she had surgery for scoliosis. When her mother, Nellie Johnson McLemore, died in 1934, the 24-year-old Lee took charge of her two brothers and two sisters, the youngest of whom was 8 at the time. That ended her hopes for finishing college. She married in 1941 and had three children. Her husband, Denton Lee, owned a store In Smithfield where he sold and repaired electronics and appliances. He died of a heart attack in 1965. Daughter Mary Nell Ferguson says Lee has collected newspaper clippings and records of special occasions as long as she can remember, whether they were news articles about neighbors or her children's report cards. "Anything that had anything to do with anyone she knew or loved, the clipping would be kept," Ferguson says. "She definitely had an interest in keeping history." Lee had never worked outside the home until 1967, when a librarian offered her $100 to organize newspapers in a room of the county library. She started by clipping articles of interest and filing them by subject. At the same time, she started collecting other bits and pieces, such as copies of the inside covers of family Bibles bearing the handwritten names of generations of owners. When she had enough information, she would collect donations to bind the material in books. For 10 years, she earned minimum wage working at the library part time. Then she retired and continued as a volunteer. Her collection kept growin "She just clipped and gathered until it got so big they no longer, had room in the library," says Miller, the volunteer.
History gets a home
As the holdings outgrew two library reading rooms, Lee cast her eye on the building across Third Street. When First Citizens Bank vacated the space, she worked with the bank's president and the county commissioners to move the collection there. The center opened in the former bank in 2000. Today, its holdings include hundreds of books like the ones Lee originated. Among them are census records, rolls of Civil War soldiers and lists of county cemeteries, roads and churches. Rotating exhibits greet visitors on the first floor - currently a selection of pottery made in Smithfield in the 1930s. The elevator, in the former bank vault, takes visitors to the third- floor collection that Lee began. Nearly any history book that touches on Johnston can be found on its shelves, and the genealogical information spans Eastern North Carolina and reaches into southern Virginia. Annual "road shows" reap documents and stories from the county's past, and the center solicits artifacts from Johnston families. Visitors come from across the country to research their ancestry. Lee now holds the title of curator emeritus. She takes a cab to the center every day from her home a few miles away. Poor hearing makes it more difficult for her to help researchers, but she still steps in when needed, and she still adds to her files. On a recent morning, her desk was covered with articles from the 1940s on roads being paved. Ferguson says her mother knows she has done a lot to document county history but doesn't dwell on the extent of her contributions. "When she looks around," Ferguson says, "it doesn't occur to her the magnitude of what she's done."

Obituary
MARGARET MCLEMORE LEE ..
Smithfield (NC) Margaret McLemore Lee - 96-year-old curator emeritus of the Johnston County Heritage Center - died early Monday (12 Feb 2007) at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
In 1967 she went to work part-time at the brand-new Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield where she began collecting local history and genealogy in what became known as the Johnston County Room. In 2000, the widely acclaimed collection moved into a separate home of its own across the street: today's Johnston County Heritage Center.
Although Mrs. Lee officially retired as a library employee in 1991, she continued her service as a daily volunteer in the Johnston County Room and later at the Heritage Center until a few days before her death.
She was born Sept. 26, 1910 in Johnston County's Cleveland Township as Margaret Elizabeth McLemore, daughter of Dr. George A. McLemore and Nellie Emily Johnson McLemore. Her father was a country doctor who moved the family to Smithfield in 1923. Margaret graduated from Smithfield High
School in 1927 and attended North Carolina College for Women (today's UNC-Greensboro). She married Denton F. Lee in 1941 and worked as bookkeeper for her husband's radio I and appliance business in Downtown Smithfield until his death in 1965.
Mrs. Lee joined Oakland Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Township in 1922 and in 1925 moved her membership to Smithfield's First Presbyterian Church where she served as treasurer of the Sunday School from 1947 till 1982, as the church's first woman ordained deacon, and as president of the Women of the Church. She also served as historian for the Women of the Church of Granville Presbytery as well as Women of the Church of the Synod of North Carolina.
During her term as president of the Smithfield Woman's Club in 1963-64, she won national recognition from the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the Sears- Roebuck Foundation for the club's Community Improvement Program.
She was the first president, in 1965, of the Historic Hastings House Association, which saved Smithfield's oldest surviving residence.
She was organizing regent for the Smith-Bryan Chapter of N.C. Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She was also a charter member of the Johnston County Historical Society.
She was a charter member of the Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and served as a volunteer with Contact Teleministry from 1972 until 1987.
She was a member of the first Girl Scout troop organized in Johnston County, in 1923. In 1983 Mrs. Lee was named a "Distinguished Citizen" by the Smithfield-Selma Area Chamber of Commerce.
In 1996 she served as the first Grand Marshal for Cleveland Township's Fourth of July celebration.
In 2000 she was inducted into the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest civilian award bestowed by the State of North Carolina.
In 2005 she was honored by the Johnston County Heritage Commission as a "Living Legend of Johnston County." That same year she was named "Tar Heel of the Week" by The News & Observer of Raleigh.
Mrs. Lee was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. George A. McLemore of New York City, and a sister, Lucile McLemore Austin of Smithfield, as well as her husband.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Nell Lee Ferguson and husband, Jerry of Cleveland Township, Margaret Ann Lee Stubbs and husband, David of Smithfield; son, Denton F. Lee, Jr. and wife, Jane of Cleveland Township; a brother and sister - Dr. Robert A. McLemore of Springfield, Ohio and Eloise McLemore Grady of Smithfield; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church on South Third Street in Smithfield.

Mark Freeman has her date of birth as 1848, but this contradicts both the 1850 and 1860 census. George Rogers, a descendant, emailed in September 2013 that Margaret Jane "had children from her only known marriage. One son George Edward Rogers and daughter Francis or Fannie. She was married then separated from her only known husband a George W.(Washington) Rogers. When they separated Geroge took his son George Edward Rogers (my grandfather) and Margaret took her daughter Fannie. No idea where Margaret went. George W. Rogers lived in Lavania, Carroll County and remarried a Susan Elizabeth (maiden name Pritchard)Butler whom was married with previous children from her late husband Mr. Butler."

Married a BRIM. Assumed she is the mother of Margaret T. Brim, who lived with Wilson McLemore at the time of the 1850 Pike County, Alabama census. Also assumed it was she, not her daughter, who was left a bequest of $1 in the Will of Henry McLemore of Houston County, Georgia. It is possible her first name was something other than Margaret.
