1536 I18792  Bell  Duncan  Abt 1795  Abt 1861  Darrel Bell, in a fact sheet he submitted to the "Migrations" website, wrote that "Upon departing their ancestral home in Duplin County, North Carolina in 1829, Duncan (Bell) travelled with his two sisters, Perthena and Elizabeth to Decatur County, Georgia. Duncan and his brother-in-law, Reuben Morgan, later relocated to Lowndes County where they settled near present day Quitman, Brooks County, Georgia. In 1850 Duncan Bell is enumerated in Lafayette County, Florida. It is assumed that Duncan died in late 1860 of 1861 in Lafayette County.

He served in the military 1838 3rd Seminole War in MADISON COUNTY, FLORIDA. served with the East Florida Mounted Volunteers.[It is stated in muster rolls that he rode his own "bay horse."]

Duncan was the youngest [or next to youngest] of three brothers and two sisters, of Hezekiah Bell and Martha Baggett. There's not much recorded on him before 1829. However, he is found as a witness on several documents, wiils, etc. He probaly married in his late twenty's or early thirty's. His oldest documented child, George, was born in 1828. However, there is no documents naming the mother of his seven children.

His children by his unknown first wife were:
George b. ca. 1828 Sampson Co, NC
Abraham/Abram b. 15 Aug 1830 Decatur Co, GA CSA, 5th Georgia Infantry, later County Coroner for Lafayette Co, FL
Martha b. 1833 prob. Georgia
Patrick b. 1835 Georgia
Duncan Bell, Jr. b. 1837 Georgia CSA died of disease on 25 Apr 1863 in Tullahoma, Tennessee Military Hospital
Lydia b. 25 Oct 1842 Florida
Enoch Bell Sr. b. 1841 Fl

However, he did remarry late in life. On August 8, 1855 he married Nancy T. Shortridge, there were no issue of this marriage.

In 1829, he along with his two sisters and their husbands are found selling their holdings in North Carolina. He is found on the 1830 Census for Decatur County, georgia. Duncan Bell served with Captain Livingston's Co. 2 Reg't East Florida Vols. He joined June 16, 1837 and according to the muster of October 8, 1837, he was still present. It was also noted that he rode a Bay horse. In 1840, Duncan was found on the Census of 1840 for Lowndes County, georgia. In 1850, Duncan was on the 1850 Census for Madison County, Florida. H was listed with six children, with the oldest, George living with his nephew Glission Williams.

Duncan was commissioned Justice of the Peace, July 5, 1852, by Governor Thomas Brown, for the 11th district of Madison County, Florida. During the same year he also appointed the Clerks of Election for Bell's District of Madison County, Florida. This was found on Election Return dated October 4, 1852.

With Duncan's early life still a mystery, he did leave a sound legacy for his children and other descendants to build upon. Each of his children built a strong relationship with their community. They were the Pioneers that helped build this Nation and State to what it is today.

son- William Rasor Bell & his ch.- son- John Bell
eldest dau- Penelope Stuckey

addtional notes- John Bell Jr. , son of John Bell Sr. of Duplin County, NC moved to SC in 1783 after his father's death. John Bell Jr. died 1786 in Camden District, SC.
John Bell Jrs. only known children were Frederick, William Rasor, and Penelope who married John Stuckey in Duplin County, NC and after his death moved to SC.

Passports issued by Georgia Governors 1810-1820:
"page 348, Friday, May 1, 1812,.........thro the Indian Nations to the Western Country, viz, One for Messrs. Alexander Fleming, William Fleming, Robert Fleming, and Drury Bell, the former with his wife and two children and One for Mr. Jesse Williamson with his wife and eleven children, all from Darlington District, South Carolina"

Rev. Drury Bell was born in the state of North Carolina, December 25, 1783. Of his early life but little is known. While young his mother died. At the age of fourteen he attended a Methodist camp meeting, and joined the church. His conviction for sin was very great, almost in frenzy. As he had but little religious instruction and no education he was left to the guidance of his own convictions and judgment. His conversion was very demonstrative and powerful.

About this time he was carried in what is now East Feliciana Parish, La. He volunteered in the War of 1812 and served to the end but amid all the contaminating influences of army life, he never faltered in his religion so powerful had been his conviction and conversion. Soon after returning from the War he was married to the widow Crawford, of sterling religious integrity, with whom he lived nearly sixty years. When life's weary wheels stood still she went before and left the dear old man to go along by himself. He was so anxious to read the word of God that he commenced first to spell, then to read, for he had never been to school a day in his life. His wife was his instructor and so well did he improve that he became mighty in the Scriptures.

In leaving Louisiana for the new purchase in Mississippi he asked his presiding elder to give him license to exhort the people where he was going as there was no church or ministry there. It was granted him and when the itinerant made his way down on the waters of the Pearl River in Copiah County, there was Father Bell all aglow with the Spirit of the Master, and well did he use the authority given him. He held religious services on Sunday and in the week day by night, in private houses, under bush arbors, in school-houses, had many of his neighbors converted and ready for church membership and when a church and Quarterly Conference were organized, he was licensed to preach.

So some seventy years he was a licensed exhorter and preacher, and, though he became a man of power to the pulpit, he had but three books in his library-his Bible, his own personal experience, his knowledge of men. He was simple-hearted, meek, humble. He suffered many inconveniences and wants that he might win souls to Christ. His theme in the pulpit was largely confined to the atonement of Christ and the experimental character of the gospel. Therefore he was very effective in preaching. Take him altogether, his early disadvantages and struggling poverty, weakly constitution, want of self-confidence, he was a very remarkable man. Truly, it was said the day he was buried a great man has this day fallen in Israel. Though of a very weakly constitution in his boyhood, so abstainous was he in his habits that he lived to be ninety-seven years of age, and during that long life not a blur or stain was upon his character, no complaint or charge ever brought against him in the church.

For seventy years, the question was asked annually in the Quarterly Conference "Anything against Bro. Drury Bell?". The answer came back: "Nothing against him."." How has he done his work as a local preacher?" "He has done it well." Yes, he expounded the gospel well. The artisan dropped his tools, the lawyer left his office, the student his books, the merchant his store, the farmer his plow, to go and hear that old man preach. One of the most prominent traits of his character was his devotion to prayer. I was told he spent a large portion of the night by his bed in prayer, sometimes almost the entire night. It often distressed his dear old wife. She tried to dissuade him from it. He finally became quite deaf and blind, but so well did he know the road that led to his dear Providence* where slept the most of his loved ones and old companions in the service of God, that every Sunday he was there, if the weather would permit. He always got happy before he left. January 27, 1880 he crossed the last river. He died as we would expect him to die-fell asleep in the arms of Jesus without a groan or struggle. So has passed away one among the last links that bound us to the past generation. - by A. E. Nicholson

The Handbook of Texas online notes that Miranda City, Texas was an oil boomtown.

Edward Hyatt, on his "John Bell Descendants" tree at Rootsweb's WorldConnect Project, shows him as a son of Thomas Jefferson Bell of Cherokee, Alabama by his first wife, Marinda Rucker.

At the time of the 1900 Sabine County Federal Census, 1900 Census,Enumerated 5 Jun 1900,SD 8 ED 70 Sheet 3A, Household 36-36 was that of James Bell (b. Dec 1868 Tx) and Nellie Bell (b. Mar 1868 TX). The informant was Dollie Hamilton, sister. She was widowed at the time of her death, and a resident of Brookeland, Texas.

1555 I22021  Bell  John  Abt 1790  Bef 1850  Abner Morgan wrote in 1946 about the descendants of Rueben and Dorcus MORGAN, and stated: "Sallie (MORGAN): I do not know much about her and have never contacted any of her offsprings, however I do know she married Enoch Bell and that around 1890 they lived in Kissimee, Florida." It appears that he may have been correct about the marriage of Sally Morgan to a BELL, but possibly mistaken about her husbands first name.

There was a John Bell that was a head of household in Madison County, Florida Territory in 1840. His household consisted of 1 male between the ages of 40-50, one female between 20-30, two children between the ages of 5-10 (a boy and a girl), and three children under the age of 5, one boy and two girls.

In Lowndes County, the only Bell indexed as a head of household in 1840 was Duncan BELL. In Decatur County, there were BELL household headed by a John S. BELL, but this was for a single male between the ages of 50 and 60.

I was unable to locate the family of Enoch and Sarah Bell in Georgia or Florida for any census index from 1850 through 1900.

This family group was found to be in Decatur County, Georgia in 1830.

In 1840 the same group was found on the Federal Census for Lowndes County, Georgia. According to the Williams Family, Perthenia died in 1847 in Lowndes County, the area that they resided in is possibly part of what's now Brooks County, Georgia.

New information for Perthenia, received from Linda Hughes, great-great-grand-daughter indicates that Perthena Bell Williams Morgan united with Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church, September 12, 1835. Further information from this source indicates that she possibly died about 1839. Bethlehem was located in the Old Lowndes County, present day Brooks County. Information also indicates that her husband, Reuben joined on September 13, 1835. Baptism was on the respective dates."

1594 I27588  Belohlavy  Josephine M.  8 Jul 1916  1 Jun 2018  Josephine (Josie) Slama, 101, of Dorchester, Nebraska passed away on Friday, June 1, 2018. She was born on July 8, 1916, on a farm south of Pleasant Hill, Nebraska to Frank and Christie (Sipek) Belohlavy. She attended grade school in Pleasant Hill by walking over a mile across fields sometimes crying from the cold. There were times during stormy weather her teacher didn't come. The janitor would then start a fire so she could warm up before sending her back home. She attended Swanton High School and later graduated from Crete High School in 1933. Her future husband, Joe Slama, first asked her for a dance at the Cinderella Ballroom in Crete but the music ended before they got to dance. On Sunday Joe drove to her farm and asked her to a dance near Columbus, Nebraska. They married in 1939 and eventually bought and moved to a farm south of Dorchester. In 1942 she gave birth to a son, Richard, in a house that wasn't finished. There was no electricity or running water, yet she managed to make a great home for the family. There was the cow to milk each morning, large garden to care for, chickens to be butchered, eggs to pick, vegetables and fruit to be canned, jams to make, clothes to wash by hand, and sometimes soap and butter were made. At certain times during the year there was hay to be made and she was the one that insured the 20 foot high haystack was built correctly so it would stand into the winter. She also helped pick corn by hand and stack bundles of oats. But there was always time to attend a dance at Tabor Hall, ZCBJ lodge No. 74 where she was a lifelong member receiving her 50 year pin in 1989 and honorary membership in 2012. Shortly after marriage she joined the newly formed Jes'Tus Extension Club and was an active member until the club ended in the 1970's. The 40 or so homemakers were devoted to learning the latest information provided by UNL Extension on cooking, sewing, and the many other skills homemakers needed. When the weather made roads impassable by car, they would use horses and wagon to meet at members' homes. Her mother died of diabetes in 1946 when her son was three. Her second son, Gene, was born in 1947. The Jes'Tus club then became more important to her than ever. She also became a member of the Dorchester Methodist Church. In the 1950's she helped start and lead the PH 4-H club in Pleasant Hill. She specialized in entomology helping several youth get trips to 4-H Club Congress in Chicago. For retirement, Joe and Josie moved to Dorchester in 1970. One thing she enjoyed in retirement in the 70's was making and painting pairs of owls. Over 40 families received these owls and some still have them hanging in their homes. Her husband died in 1999 after almost 60 years of marriage. Josie then spent her days in Dorchester enjoying time with friends, gardening, and helping Gene maintain records of his purebred heard of Simental cattle. Eventually she broke a hip from a fall and spent the last couple of years in Tabitha of Crete where she enjoyed time with the staff and other residents. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Richard and Dianne (Whittington) Slama of Lincoln and Gene Slama of Dorchester; grandchildren Mark, David, and Todd Slama and Michelle (Slama) Brummer; and seven greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe; parents; and brothers Robert and Joe Belohlavy and sister Anna Urban. Services will be Wednesday, June 6, at 10 a.m. at Kuncl Funeral Home with Pastor John Slama officiating. Soloist is Tim Javorsky. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are to the American Diabetes Association. Interment: Wilber Czech Cemetery. Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete is in charge of arrangements.  STR06

1600 I11923  Bengelmann  Adam  Between 1580 and 1600    Adam Bengellmann was identified as our earliest known Benkelman ancestor through the tireless research of Margaret "BonnieMargaret" McDonald Benkelman Jacobs.

On page 19 of the 1981 unpublished edition of her manuscript, BonnieMargaret cites the Reichsstadt records of Schw?bisch Gm?nd for the years 777 to 1450, which include records of early Bengelmanns and Benkelmanns. She noted that all of the German literature on early names assign the name of Benkelmann to a derivation from the Bengel Mann, the letters K and G having the same sound in German. Bonnie noted an entry for 5 Jun 1354, containing an early reference to a resident of that area using the Bengelmann surname. This reference concerned the decision of the church to establish a high mass, and lists the names of the men who will contribute. She notes that 'within the lists we discover not only a probable ancestor, but also the entire range of of developing names':

"Fritz Abelin, pastor Konrad Argenhaus, the Agnerin, Albrect the reaper and binder, the men from the house of Adelburg, the Augustinian, Bengelmann, Bissinger the Lurn, Gotzin the Murerin, Konrad Grulich of Graben, Gumpolt of the Eselgasse, Graman the butcher, Hoppelhart of the Zieselgaus, Hans Imhog, Kurnegg from the Graben, Mangolt, Ottlin from the Graven, the one-eyed Roser, Heinz Rot, Heinrich Slamp, der Schwitzer, Walter Vertzbry and Sigfried Wusterriert. " (BonnieMargaret's full citation was "Urkunden und Aketn der ehemaligen Reichsstadt Schw?bisch Gm?nd. 777 bis 1500 A.D." Bearbeitet von Alfons Nitsch I. TEIL 777 bis 1450' und Inventare Der Nichtstaatlichen Archive in Baden-W?rttemberg Heft 11. Herausgegeben vom Stadtarchiv Schw?bisch Gm?nd. 1966).

On pages 20 and 21 of her 1981 unpublished manuscript, Bonnie quoted Dr. Paul Edel, her initial genealogist in Aalen, as citing Josef Karlmann Brechenmacher's book, ETYMOLOGISCHES WORTERBUCH DER DEUTSCHEN FAMILIENNAMEN (C.A. Starke-Verlag Limburg A.D. LAHN Bergrundet in Gorlitz 1847. Leiferung 1-10, Erster Band 1957-1960, A-J) in which it was suggested that Bengel Mann derived from "Prugel (cudgel or club), Knuttel (also cudgel or club), starker (strength), derber Kerl (coarse man)"---the earliest Bengel being a coarse, strong man....whether through occupation or personality.

Ingolf Vogel, a regular contibutor to the SURNAME-ORIGINS-L@rootsweb.com, agrees showing the name likely derived from the middle high German word "bengel" = stick, cudgel, and signifying a coarse, tough man. It is possible she was citing the same source as Dr. Edel. Ingolf added that the modern German word "Bengel" is a mischievous boy, and that it could very well have evolved from that old word for coarse/tough. BonnieMargaret made the same point.

Ingolf also found listed in her sources the name BENCKELMANN - from Benecke, a Low German form of the name Bernhard (Germanic roots "beranu" (bear) & "harti" (hard).

BonnieMargaret, on page 31 of her 1981 manuscript stated that "Herr Weyhreter who currently has possession of those records [the parish records of Adelmannsfelden] confirms that Adam and Hans Jerg Bengellman were brothers and the sons of ADAM BENGELLMAN, M?ller auf der Burghards M?hle (a "fortress mill/protected mill") in Fachsenfeld Parish. The mill still stands there today, as sturdy as it was then. "From all appearances, its workingmen might have left just yesterday, yet in was never again a working grain mill after the Thirty Years War." (The reference to Burghards M?hle as being in Fachsenfeld Parish--six miles northwest of Aalen--was in the first paragraph on page 31, in the third paragraph of that same page, she instead referenced Burghards M?hle as being in Adelsmannsfelden Parish---about 12 miles northwest of Aalen.) Her detailed German map section does show Burghards M?hle as closer to Adelsmannsfelden than Faschsenfeld. Additionally the parish records referenced above are for Adelsmannsfelden.

In a letter Bonnie-Margaret Jacobs wrote Ben Benkelman Jr, dated October 13, 1980, she stated: "I had engaged my Stuttgart genealogist [Friedrich Wollmershauser] to meet us in Pluderhausen to go through old town records there. We climbed into an attic, behind two locked doors, and there I read pages and pages of marriage and death inventories that gave me a sense of the family fortunes---which were respectably solid, though not wealthy. That done, we had half a day left, and Friedrich suggested we go back to Aalen, where I'd failed to get even close to those oldest records....We deposited Friedrich in the parish records and Hans [distant Cousin Hans Benkelmann of Dewangen] and Bruce and I set out to find Benkelmans.

An old woman we found told us that the Benkelmans in town were newcomers. That really startled me since this was the place of the oldest records of the family. We ran down the wife of one of them who agreed...and referred us to her husband's parents who live in a place like the Schneiderhof, called Berg, but much older and more primitive. (BonnieMargaret marked Berg on a German map, showing it northwest of Aalen, between the towns of Dewangen and Rodamsd?rfle). And these old Benkelmanns weren't terribly sure who they were either, except that the old man believed his grandfather had been born in Waiblingen.

So we headed back to the parish house to see what Friedrich [the genealogist] had turned up. When we arrived Friedrich and the pastor were beside themselves with excitement. My recently deceased genealogist from that area had given me the idea that the record there would be the oldest we would find--and the parish records being so old, many were now illegible anyway...The parish records began in 1650, immediately after the 30 Years War that left two thirds of the Germans dead, and the country absolutely ravaged. It would be a miracle to find a thread of the family back through that war. But it was there! It develops that there was a displaced pastor in the area who had no church, but he continued to administer the sacraments to those who wanted him--and after the war he carefully recorded his records into the proper parishes! So we found the birth of the father of my eldest ancestor--and the place it occurred--in 1624. Since that record bore the place of residence of the parents---we had then located the place where the family lived prior to the war.... But even more interesting, both genealogists have assured me that wherever the family lived before the war was the place they had lived for generations, since there was no mobility prior to the war. This is the place they would have lived when the German people in the countryside assumed surnames! In other words--I have found where this family began as Benkelmans! Even Cousin Hans was equally stunned that such a record existed and that the name of that first ancestor was ADAM.

After the Thirty Years War (l6l8-l648) the population of Wurttemberg was decreased by 75%. That was true in all of southern Germany. Those who weren't murdered by the troops just starved to death. Germany regained population very quickly, mostly due to migration of people. Many of the Swiss moved to the west bank (which was then German, not French) and many people like our Benkelmans were free to move west from around the Bavarian border to land that had been opened by the war. Our Benkelmans migrated from the east to Pluderhausen early in the l700's.
