He registered for the draft for World War I in Houston County, Texas. He was an engineer, nearest relative was Dana McDaniel, and he was described as tall and slender, with grey eyes and brown hair.
Kay Parker McCary noted, on the FindAGrave memorial page that was created for him by Ray and Peggy Holbrooks Pace, that even though his tombstone says "Richard Hubert McDaniel..[his actual first name was} Richmond....a family name that carries out in several generations; my mother and his death certificate also verified this."
In his autobiography, "In Search of Blue Water", he writes that he was born on his parents 154 acre homestead, delivered by Dr. C. F. Smith, his Uncle by marriage. The house in which he was born and grew up in was probably built not long after the Civil War, and during his early years faced south toward Six Mile Creek. He passed the state teachers exam in 1935, thought he never taught school. After taking courses at the Chenier Business and Radio College in Beaumont, he worked for W. E. Coussons in Hemphill at his department store on the Hemphill Courthouse square.
US Army career serviceman, Chief Warrant Officer, W4, May 5, 1941 to May 1, 1962, served in the Philippines, Okinawa, Marshall Islands, and Canal Zone, awarded the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. After his retirement from the army, he worked for the Texas Employment Commission in Orange.
Robert Cecil McDaniel
Robert Cecil McDaniel died on the 23rd day of November, 2005 at 90 years of age. Cecil was born on March 19, 1915 in Sabine County, Texas in the community of Six Mile. Sabine County has been the home of his ancestors since 1850 when Cecil's great grandfather settled in the community later to be known as Fairdale in the Southeastern part of Sabine County, Texas.
He entered the United States Army on May 5, 1941 and retired from service after having served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He served in the Philippines, Okinawa, Panama, and with the Army task groups in the Marshall Islands, South Pacific, which participated in the first hydrogen bomb test. He also served six years in the Pentagon, Washington, D.C., in the Office of the Adjutant General, U.S. Army.
After retiring from the military, Cecil and his wife, Loye Winona White McDaniel, returned to Sabine County. It was during this time that Cecil's love for writing, his family and the people of Sabine County resulted in his authoring 12 books, including a book of poetry and prose, When the Moon was on the Rise, an autobiography, In Search of Blue Water, a book of short essays, Come Smile with Me, and nine historical books: Citizen-Soldiers of Sabine County, Texas 1812-1991; Sabine County, Texas: The First One-Hundred and Fifty Years 1836-1986; Hemphill High School, Sabine County, Texas: The First Seventy-Eight Years 1911-1989; The 1900 Census of Sabine County, Texas; The 1920 Census of Sabine County, Texas; and A Pictorial History of Sabine County, Texas (Vols. I, II, III, and IV).
In addition to being an author, Cecil was an artist. His paintings most often depict valleys of bluebonnets and other landscapes. Robert Cecil McDaniel was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Loye Winona White McDaniel of the Gravel Hill community near Hemphill, Texas (born October 30, 1919 - died December 4, 2002), grandson, Stephen White McDaniel, II, parents, Ruben Sim McDaniel and Winifred Caroline Broach McDaniel, and brothers, Ruben Sim (R.S.) McDaniel, Jr., Norman Broach McDaniel, and Kenneth Smith McDaniel. He is survived by his sons, Dwight Patrick McDaniel and Stephen White McDaniel, daughters-in-law, Patricia Ann Tweten McDaniel and Marcia Sue Burlison McDaniel, and grandchildren, Harper Longstreet McDaniel and Erin Colleen McDaniel.
To his family, he will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather, and also as an artist, poet and historian of Sabine County. "A God who formed me from the clay, Then gave to me the sweet light of day, And one faith, one hope, one soul sure, Imperfect yes, but through Him made pure." In her transcription of the Oak Hill Cemetery, Kay Parker McCary indicates that he married first Thelma Alford and second Iola Westmoreland. His younger brother, Robert Cecil McDaniel, writes that R.S. and he jointly enrolled in Chenier Business and Radio College in Beaumont in September 1932, staying with their Uncle Kelse and Aunt Katie May (Broach) Renwick on 2805 Orange Street, two miles from the downtown business district. He graduated from the Radio course around December, 1933, and first returned to Hemphill and worked for W. E. Coussons. Later, Chenier's obtained a job for him as an engineer with KFDM radio station in Beaumont. He went on to work at KTRH and KXYZ in Houston, making many trips with the announcers to Southwest Conference football games. He later still worked for the Federal Aviation Agency, from which he retired in the early 1960's, returning to Hemphill.
Kay Parker McCary, in her annotated transcription of the Oak Hill Cemetery in Sabine County, shows he married second Iola Westmoreland.

DECADE OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION
By Harry P. Noble p. 10
Sam (Tex) McDaniel, of San Augustine, rode a steer named Barker all the way from Texas to New York. He and the 1200 pound steer then flew from New York to Washington, D.C. where President Franklin D. Roosevelt congratulated. him.
Note: It appears, but has not been verified, that the Sam McDaniel mentioned above is the same person as the Sam McDaniel who is the son of William Frazier McDaniel and Sarah Pinkney Hargroves.
His FindAGrave memorial page, created by Ray and Peggy Holbrooks Pace and maintained by Kay Parker McCary shows that" Co. F, 11 Texas Infantry, C.S.A" is inscribed on either his headstone or a military marker, though no photo of this is shown.

In 1940, the federal census enumeration shows that Talmadge, age 29, was married to an Elizabeth, his same age, and living in Harris County, Texas. Talmadge was shown as born in Texas and working as a cord wood contractor. Elizabeth was born in New Mexico. Both has lived in rural Sabine County five years earlier. They had two sons listed with them, 4 year old Arthur and 3 year old John S. The Texas Birth Index has listings for a Falmage Arthur McDaniel, born 5 Jan 1936 in Bexar County, TX to Falmage (sic) McDaniel and Elizabeth McDaniel; and for John Samuel McDaniel, born 2 Mar 1937 in Bexar County to Talmadge McDaniel and Elizabeth McDaniel. It is not known with certainty if Elizabeth's maiden name was indeed McDaniel, or if both birth records inadvertantly used her married surname instead of maiden name. She is shown as Elizabeth McDaniel McDaniel on her Find A Grave memorial page.

Could this be the same person as John Waldon McDaniel, who according to his Texas Death Certificate was born in Kirbyville, TX on 26 Dec 1916 and died in Kingsville, Texas? That death certificate, with his widow Mary McDaniel being the informant, indicated John Waldon McDaniel worked for Exxon and was a veteran of World War II. His parents, however, were listed as "unknown."
White & Toole, "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records", pages 46 and 47 show that "In 1786, Absalom McD. made his will naming wife Bartha and sons, WILLIAM, Hiram and Jehiel. Hiram also moved to Georgia about 1798. Absalom's estate was on the Savanah River. His father, James had rec'd 640 A. plus 756 A. in 1796. In 1813, Alexander McD., Wm. McD. acting as his attorney, sold over 1000 acres of land to Moses Swearingen. Much of the information about the family of William and Dosha McDaniel was taken from a letter rec'd by the late Lewis McD. of Sabine County from a cousin in Alabama, in 1924. The letter was from John Matheny. He obviously copied if from the family Bible, for most of these lines have been researched from then until present, and they have checked out to be correct."
His FindAGrave memorial page, created by Kay Parker McCary, shows him as a son of Lee McDANIEL (1842-1906, FAG # 13669391) and Lanney McDANIEL (1859-1936, FAG #13669389), both buried at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Yellowpine. His mother, shown as Lanie, was living with William his wife of 12 years, Mary (nee McClelland) at the time of the 1930 federal census, in JP 1 of Sabine County.
