Her Texas Death Certificate shows that her usual occupation was that of a school teacher. She was a resident of Geneva, Sabine County, Texas at the time of her death, and her name at death was shown as Julia Eppie Harris, with the informant being Joe Leon Harris Jr.
Laura Carolyn Mathews Epps (Carolyn) went to be with the Lord on February 8, 2017 at the young age of 85. Carolyn was born on April 2nd 1931 in San Augustine, Texas to Mabel Miller Mathews and Lonny Mathews (deceased) and was married to the love of her life, Richard Kenneth Epps, Jr.(Ken) for almost 67 years.
Carolyn grew up in San Augustine in a loving family. She was the youngest of 5 siblings (Miller Mathews, Clifton Mathews, Helen Jean Lake, Dr. Victor Mathews, '96 all deceased) who affectionately called her "Sissy", which later became "Aunt Sissy" to her many nieces and nephews. The siblings were especially close because their father was killed in an accident six weeks before she was born and their mother died when she was 16; the Mathews' Clan (as many referred to them) overcame the tragedies and remained together, supported by the older brothers. They have had annual family reunions every Christmas for the last 63 years, a tradition that continues to this day.
Carolyn and Ken are blessed with four wonderful children: Deborah Kay Vaughan and husband Tom, Richard K Epps, III, Robert Mathews Epps and wife Terry, Betty Kim Bradshaw and husband Kent; Eleven grandchildren - Jennifer Vaughan Buttery (deceased), Kristin Vaughan Mrnustik, Michele Vaughan Sparkman, Clayton Vaughan, Alison Epps, Hallie Epps, Danielle Epps, Brian Bradshaw, Tyler Bradshaw, Scott Bradshaw, and Brooke Bradshaw; and fourteen great grandchildren with another two expected later this year.
Carolyn loved the Lord with all her heart and wasn't afraid to share that love with others. She was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church for many years and involved in Bible studies and Cursillo. She will always be remembered as an incredible and supportive wife, mother and grandmother. Carolyn was full of joy and fun with a huge heart and generous spirit, known for her ever present sweet and inviting smile, quick wit, sense of humor, and availability at a moments' notice to help others. She adored all of her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Carolyn, aka Mimi, was dearly loved and will be dearly missed.
A Memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday February 17th, 12:30pm in the chapel at Grace Presbyterian Church, 10221 Ella Lee at Sam Houston Tollway, Houston, Texas. Internment services will be held on Saturday, February 18th, at Antioch Church of Christ Cemetery at 2 pm in San Augustine, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to the charity of your choice.

FindAGrave shows him as a son of Abraham Mathews and Elizabeth (???) Burroughs, and brother of Inlow Mathews. There is an Inlow Mathews who also has a memorial at FindAGrave (FAG #34734320). That Inlow Mathews was shown as born ca 1815, also in Georgia (possibly Wilkes County). However, Inlow Mathews appears to be the son of a woman named Selah/Celia Ann, whom was living with his family in San Augustine County at the time of the 1850 and 1860 Federal Census. Of interest is the fact that "Celie Mathes, age 80, Female, NC" was ALSO listed in the home of Reese Mathews at the time of the 1860 Federal Census. In the home of Inlow, she was listed as "Cilia A. Matthews, age 80, Female, NC." It is assumed she was listed in both homes as she lived with both from time to time? The enumeration of Inlow Mathews home was on 30 July 1860, and that of the home of Reese Mathews was in 1 August 1860. The two men lived only about 20 households apart.
It is thefore assumed that Reese and Inlow are indeed brothers, both sons of the Celia that was listed in both of their homes in 1860. Her maiden name may be Burroughs, but this is not proven. Nor is the name of their father (possibly Abraham) proven.

May have been listed twice on the 1870 census? as Wm., age 15 and as W. R. Mathews, age 14? Or are these two different siblings? There was only one male child of this approximate age in 1860, 7 year old William.
In 1910 and in 1920 he was living with his brother, Inlow Lee, and was listed as Single at both enumerations.
FindAGrave shows her as a daughter of Martin Matthews (TX) and Ann Gellatly (Scotland), whom are also listed as her parents on her Texas Death Certificate.
Her Texas Death Certificate shows her as a daughter of George R. Mathews and Mary Halbert, and that she was born in Geneva, Sabine County, Texas. The informant was her daughter, Mary Taylor.
Find A Grave shows him as a son of Henry Friedrich Matthies and Lizzie Anne Strauss, whom both also have memorials on that website. This family can be found in Fillmore County, Nebraska at the time of the 1930 census. Louis is the middle of their then three children, Mabel, age 14, Louis 10, and Leslie (son) D. age 7. All three children were shown as born in Nebraska, as were their parents.
He is instead listed as Kermit James Matthews on the North Carolina Death Index. His DOB was shown as 28 Sep 1918, and DOD as 24 Dec 1995, in Durham. He died at a nursing home, and was divorced.
When he registered for the draft during World War I, he listed his name as Willie James Matthis, resident of Ingold, NC. His date of birth was shown as 13 Apr 1885, and his occupation was farming. His nearest relative was Annie Matilda Matthis, also of Ingold. The was tall and slender, with Brown eyes and dark hair. She married Frank McCLAIN and as of 2004, they were living in Alto.
Obituary, from FindAGrave:
Funeral for Ann McClain, 82, of Alto will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at A. Frank Smith United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Fitzgerald and the Rev. Greg Megill officiating. Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery. Mrs. McClain died Aug. 1, 2011, in Tyler. She was born Aug. 1, 1929, in Hemphill. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3. O.T. Charles D. "Charlie" Maund, 75, of Austin died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002. Born Feb. 3, 1927, in Hemphill, he had made his home in Austin since 1957. Maund was the definition of a self-made man. He possessed a sixth sense when it came to business. Starting out with very little at the age of 19, he bought and sold used cars for several years before acquiring his first new car dealership in Pt. Arthur at the age of 26. He turned 30 in 1957 and moved to Austin opening Charles Maund Oldsmobile-Cadillac. Maund worked hard and put in countless hours building a thriving business that allowed him to become a multi-dealership owner by acquiring a handful of dealerships long before the idea of a "mega dealer" came about. Charlie set a multitude of records, received countless awards and accolades in the automobile business.
Maund enjoyed his life, loved people and treasured his sisters, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Charlie was a licensed jet pilot, an accomplished sportsman who loved to fish and hunt. He was a Texas rancher and cattleman who loved spending time at ranches with friends and family. University of Texas football was a passion; Charlie and Coach Royal were good friends for many years as were many of the UT athletic department staff during Coach Royal's tenure.
His wife and best friend, Helen Lang Maund, to whom he was wed for 47 years, preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by brothers Harry Maund and Belmont Maund and sisters Thelma FELTS and Wilhemina CROWELL. Survivors; sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Janis MAUND and Mark and Patti MAUND; grandchildren, Jennifer Maund, Megan Maund, Erik Maund and wife, Sheri, Lindsey Maund, Adam Maund, and Ashley Maund; great-granchildren, Preston Charles Maund and Hannah Mckenzie Maund; sisters, Lillian CORDRAY, Mabel SHERMAN, Dorothy FELTS, and Ann McCLAIN. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Christian Life Church in Austin with Pastor Rex Johnson officiating. Memorials may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation or Austin Children's Hospital. Cook Walden Funeral Home of Austin, directors.
Dorothy Jean Maund Felts passed from this life to the waiting arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at her home in Hemphill. She was a beautiful woman with a loving heart and quick wit that played a mean hand of 42. Holidays were a favorite for her, bringing her large extended family together each holiday to make life-long memories; as well as for her famous chicken and dumplings and chocolate pies.
She was active in her community, being a long time member of the James Frederick Gomer chapter of the Daughers of the Republic of Texas, Hemphill Lions Club as well as the American Cancer Society, volunteer and treasurer for United Christian Services and Salvation Army, treasurer for the Hemphill Cemetery, Sunday School teacher and longtime member of First Baptist Church of Hemphill. She retired from First State Bank, Hemphill.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Earnest Clifton Felts; daughter, Janie Felts Edmiston; and great-granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Felts.
Left to cherish her memory are sisters, Ann McClain of Alto and Mable Sherman of Victoria; son Ronnie Felts and wife Ona of Hemphill; son, Larry Felts and wife Frances of Lufkin; daughter, Vickie Felts of Hemphill; son, Davie Felts and wife Connie of Hemphill; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 28 in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Aaron Pardue officiating. Burial follows in the Hemphill City Cemetery.
Services were under the direction of Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill.

He was widowed, and shown as the son of Henry Clay Maund and Patty Emma Goodloe. The informant was Thelma Maund Felts.

In a family history prepared by his niece, Katherine Allen Tirado, he was instead shown as being born on April 21, 1842 in Albany, Georgia.
White and Toole show him as a son of Rev. William Maund. "The Maund brothers, Hardie, Wm, and Matt, came to America and also rec'd Crown Grants of land in Va. Rev. Wm. Maund (the son of William) and his wife Angelina moved to Alabama then to Jasper County, Texas. He organized and was pastor of the first Baptist Church in Jasper."
They further note that he "Became active in politics and served Sabine County in the State Legislature for a number of years. He was Sabine County Judge for 17 years and postmaster of Sabinetown for 10 years."
In her annontated transcription of the Hemphill City Cemetery, Kay Parker McCary shows, in error, that he was a son of William L. and Susan J. Maund. William L. Maund was actually his older half brother, and Susan Josephine Cowart Maund his sister-in-law.
On his FindAGrave memorial, created by A. Liem, Henry Clay Maund is shown as a "Son of Rev. William W Maund and Caroline Kirksey [nee Young]. Half-brother of William Lott Maund, first Mayor of Center, Shelby Co, Texas." This corresponds with census records.

His Texas death certificate shows that he was married at the time of his death, and a veteran, serving from 17 Feb 1943 to 9 Feb 1946. The information was completed based on his V. A. Medical records. His usual occupation was that of an appliance salesman at a department store, and his usual residence was rural Orange County, Texas, Indian Lake.
When he registered for the World War I draft, he was a saw mill laborer in Hemphill, Texas, reporting that this was also where he was born, on 31 Jan 1895. This is the closest date to the 1900 census (which reported Jan 1894), and was filled out by Leo himself, so is assumed to be accurate. Both his tombstone and death certificate show him as being born later, 1897 and 1899 respectively. He was married and supporting his wife, and described as tall, slender, and with brown eyes and black hair. His Texas Death certificate showed that he worked as a collector at a loan company. He was married at the time of his death, the informant being Mrs. Hazel Maund.
When he registered for the draft during World War I, he was a resident of Nacogdoches, Texas, working as a Salesman for C. W. Butt of Nacogdoches. His nearest relative was Lizzien Maund (presumably his wife). He was described as being of medium heighth and stout, with brown eyes and black hair.

Although the 1930 census shows her as 12, she was probably closer to 10 or 11, based on her High School graduation year and on the fact that she was not listed with her parents and siblings at the time of the 1920 census.
She married Hugh SHERMAN, and they lived in Victoria.
