Obituary, from FindAGrave
Alfred Charles Matejka was born to Charles Matejka and Anna Vavra Matejka on October 9, 1923, at Milligan, NE, and passed away June 26, 2013, at Ridgewood Care Center in Seward, Ne, at the age of 89 years, 8 months, and 17 days. He was one of 5 children in the family.
Alfred was born, raised, and lived on the same farm Northeast of Milligan all his life, except for the past 5 1/2 years. After graduating from Milligan High School, in 1942, he started a lifetime career of farming the family farm. In 1984 Alfred was recipient of the Ak-Sar-Ben Pioneer Farm award given to families in Nebraska whose land has been owned by the same family 100 years or more.
Alfred had a love for conversation and telling stories, especially topics such as family and community historic events, pioneer methods and life, and of course the "weather", a true farmer.
Being a very kind and patient person he cared for his mother until she passed away on April 9, 1969.
Alfred married Joy Weddle Eurich March 29,1971. In the 36 years of marriage, Alfred and Joy enjoyed gardening, polka, and country music, travelling, family time, good food and most of all the company of each other.
After Joy passed away in Nov., 2007, Alfred moved to assisted care at the Green House in Seward. Oct 2012 he moved to Ridgewood Care Center, as his health was declining. June 20, 2013, Alfred started receiving Hospice care. During this time he was baptized into the Catholic faith.
To know Alfred was to know his humor and good nature. He always had a smile on his face and a good word until the very end of his life. When asked how he was doing, the answer always was "like an old man'! Never, it seemed did he tire of being outdoors with nature and traveling the countryside looking at crops and the land.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, wife Joy, sisters Mollie Nun, Georgia Pracheil, Helene Romero, and Rose Matejka. Stpeson John Eurich and Step-daughter Linda Hamelin.
He is survived by nieces, Patrician and husband Robert Lee; Mary and husband Harlan Mettenbrink; Elaine and husband Merlyn Nielsen; and Maureen and Rodney Nielsen; Step-daughter Janet Hansen and companion Arthur C. Holdawy Jr.; and step-son Larry Eurich and wife Linda; and many nieces, nephews and step grandchildren.
Could this be the same Anton Matejka that is buried at the Bohemian National Cemtery in Milligan, dates shown as 11 Nov 1873-14 Jun 1956, sharing a double tombstone with a Rose, 16 Oct 1874-28 Oct 1937?
In the Milligan Nebraska 1888-1988 book, it was noted that Antonie Matejka was born on June 11, 1840 (p 215) but this appears to be an error. This date of birth would have made her 116 at her date of death. Also, her parents were born in 1835 and 1839 (p 415), and her husband was born in 1864. Her date of birth was probably circa 1870, as it is also noted that "Antonie's father, Frank, and older brother, James came to the country in 1879, and after buying land, sent for his wife....and eight small children....(who traveled) to Bremen, Germany by rail and then boarded a ship to America. Antonie was only nine years old." (p 215)
The Milligan book also notes that "She was devoted to her family and worked diligently for ZCJB Lodge in Milligan and worked for donations and pledges toward the building of the Milligan Auditorium. She also worked for the F.C.D. Organization. Her many handcrafts were appreciated by all and she was a great flower lover and gardener." (Milligan p 215).
It appears that there were TWO Antonie MATEJKA's in or around Milligan, NE who were relatively close in age. There was also an Antonie MATEJKA who was the first wife of Joseph ROHLA, and who was born 22 May 1866 and died 28 May 1943. (Milligan, p 325).

When her daughters were growing up, Georgia was active in 4-H leadership, particularly enjoying passing her sewing skills along to her girls. She also devoted many hours to her gardening, especially enjoying her flowers. Throughout her life she was always busy "with needle in her hand" working on many lovely sewing, quilting, embroidery and crocheting projects. Wayne Keith Matejka was the only child born to Frank and Clara Rippe Matejka on January 7, 1928, at their rural home at Strang, Nebraska. He passed away peacefully at the York General Hospital on February 17 at the age of 86 years, 1 month, and 10 days, surrounded by his wife, five daughters, and five son-in-laws.
He was born and raised on the family farm near Strang where he attended Strang School through the eleventh grade. He attended Ohiowa High School his senior year because he wanted to play basketball and graduated in 1946.
He was baptized June 14, 1928, and confirmed March 14, 1948, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church (South) (now called Grace Lutheran) of Ohiowa. He transferred his membership in 1951 to St. John's Lutheran Church in Ohiowa.
Wayne married Opal Rose Schrock of Geneva on January 22, 1950, at her brother's home at Davenport, Nebraska. They recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. This marriage was blessed with five daughters--Sherri, Kathy, Deb, Julie, and Kari Jo.
He had many interests. His favorites were softball/baseball and 4-H. He touched the hearts of many people through softball. Wayne had a very successful record of 645 wins and 185 losses with the Strang Ladies Softball team of 40 years. He received the Jim Hall Memorial Award in recognition of his outstanding coaching ability in 1993 and was inducted in the Nebraska Softball Hall of Fame in 1995. Many awards were received for winning league, invitational, district, and state tournaments. The highlight was winning the State Tournament in 1996.
Wayne was involved in 4-H for over 50 years. Being active for many years through the 4-H program as a parent, club leader, and supporter, he attended many county fairs and other shows at the local, state, and national levels. His advice to his girls and grandchildren helped them win many honors and awards.
During his early days of farming, he enjoyed trucking and custom corn shelling. Although his main love was farming, he also enjoyed selling Stormor Bins & Buildings for 45 years. Many trips were made with his red pickup to Omaha, Grand Island, and Fremont
He was active in many community activities--Strang School Board Member for 50 years, Strang CIP, Geneva Rural Fire Board, Belle Prairie Precinct Board, and Exeter Feeders & Breeders Association.
Family activities were important to him whether it was a sports activity, 4-H event, or holiday gathering. During the last few years, Wayne enjoyed spending time at Bubba's Anytime for a cup of coffee, meal at noon, afternoon snack, or evening meal with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Opal; five daughters, Sherri (Jim) Reinsch of Geneva; Kathy (Bruce) Soukup of Strang; Deb (Leroy) Rohr of Tobias; Julie (Chris) Dunker of Strang; Kari Jo (Bryan) Alfs of Shickley. Grandchildren are Marc (Marci) Reinsch of Geneva; Jami (Mark) Schmidt of Strang; Brent Reinsch of Geneva; Derek Reinsch of St. Paul; Kali Reinsch of Sutton. Wayne and Opal have always enjoyed their family. He was the one who has always been there, loved, cared, and provided for us. Someone we LOVE with all our heart.
The Milligan 2008 History book shows that he entered the Air Force in May 1942 and was honorably discharged that same year. He returned to Nebraska and worked for the Cushman Company in Lincoln, returning to Milligan to farm after the war.
He and Goldie moved to Tobias in 1959, and to Dorchester in 1967 where Bill worked for the State.
Sharon Nemeth emailed that "the marriage date for Agnes Matejovsky & Bert Redmond was 27 Apr 1920. They were going to live in Fairfax, SD, where Agnes was teaching and Vincent Janda was superintendent of schools at the time. Redmond was a local Fairfax boy, owner of the meat market and "Velda Theatre." Sharon further speculated that reason an article about her marriage was not published until the June issue of the Milligan newspaper issues is that Agnes probably in town for Vincent Janda's wedding. The article about Agnes stated that she would be visiting her sister Mrs. Posvar for two weeks.

Stanley Matejovsky passed away at Ingleside and the remains were interred in the national Bohemian cemetery Sunday afternoon. The funeral services were held jointly with that of Josef Svec. The bodies were taken to the auditorium where the services were held. The body of Josef Svec was conduted tot he cemetery and interred and then the remains of Stanley Matejovsky were disposed of in a like mannger.
Stanley Matejovsky was born in Milligan November 12, 1897. He graduated from the Milligan High School with the class of 1916. After finishing his school work he worked here as a farm hand and it was because of his industry and his faithfulness as well as his habits of thrift that he won for himself the respect and esteem of everyone.
It is not so important in life as to the nature of work in which we are engaged. The important thing is that we be engaged int eh first place and that we do what we are engaged in with some degree of efficiency. That is waht this boy did and that is what won for him the commendation and the love of his fellows. Stanley made his home with his father, who was the caretaker of cemeteries and as a school boy he helped his father in this work. He became afflicted with epilepsy and it was this malady which caused his demise.
Stanley Matejovsky passed away at the age of 34 years, 8 months and 1 day. There survive him his mother, Rose Matejovsky of Geneva ans his brother Edward, a sister, Agnes Redmond of Vetal, S.D., three half brothers, Joseph Janda of Exeter, Gust Janda of Fairmont and Vincent Janda of Rapid City, S. D., two half sisters, Estella Posvar of Pender and Emma Yech of Colorado and two step sisters, Mary Sluka of Geneva and Anna Bures of Fairmont.
Could he have been married twice? At the time of the 1880 census, he is listed as married to a Fanny, which is indeed a nickname for Frances, and she is the correct age. However, there is an 8 year gap between daughter Emma and her younger siblings, and Emma is listed after the two younger children, and not before them, which is usual. FindAGrave indicates he was also married to Malinda Mississippi Murray (1855-1918).

FindAGrave shows that he was born in Wilkes County, Georgia. His mother Selah/Celia Ann, born in North Carolina ca 1779/1780, was living with his family at the time of both the 1850 and 1860 Federal census.
The FindAGrave memorial (#34734655) for Reece Mathews, born 30 Oct 1810 in Georgia, states that Reece was a son of Abraham Mathews and Elizabeth Burroughs, and brother of Inlow. Reece is also buried in the Thomas cemetery, and lived in close proximity to Inlow at the time of the 1850 and 1860 census.
Additionally, in 1860, both families were listed with Selah/Celia/Cilia Mathews, age 80, born in North Carolina as a member of their household, even though they were in seperate homes. It is assumed they were brothers, and both sons of Celia Mathews.
