At the time of the 1880 census, she was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and George Woods, in Newton County, Texas. The "Daughters of the Republic Of Texas, Patriot Ancestor Album, Volume 1" states that she was born in McNairy County, Tennessee on 1 May 1814, and that she married Seborn Woods ca 1830, living for a time inYalobusha County, Mississippi in 1840 and settled in what is now Newton County (then Jasper County) Texas.
She was listed as Nannie Jane Gibson on her death certificate, the wife of J. B. Gibson, and a daughter of Junius F. Marshall and Artemisa Payne of Kentucky. The informant was Margaret Gibson of Irvington, KY.

Riley is not one of the children who were specifically listed in the Will of his father, Thomas Marshall, or in any other Bedford County records. However, his relationship is well established by the testimony of his youngest son, Woodson.
Marilyn Childs sent Tom Marshall a copy of the account from Woodson's notebook, now in the hands of her aunt Jane Beard. His record says:
"It is traditional in our family that before the Revolutionary War, three brothers: John, Samuel and Thomas Marshall came from England and settled in the Colonies. The two former in Maryland, the latter in Virginia.
Thomas Marshall lived near Liberty in Bedford county, Virginia where my father Riley Marshall was born Sept. 15, 1797. His mother's maiden name was Oliver, and she belonged to a family of much respectability and for whom my oldest sister Harriet Oliver was named.
My father disliked slavery and on reaching his majority, emigrated to the new free state of Ohio. One of his brothers, Alexander moved to Kentucky and one, Samuel to Missouri. His only (sic) son, Silas N. Marshall, lived in Little Rock, Arkansas."
Some authorities claim that the father of Riley was Capt. Thomas Marshall, a brother of Chief Justice John Marshall. However, that Thomas married Frances Kennan and went to Mason County, Kentucky by 1790.
The slavery issue, mentioned by Woodson above, may have sparked some family disagreements and may have been at least a partial factor in the decision of Riley and the Van Pelt's to go to Ohio in 1817 and Alexander and Samuel to Kentucky in 1820. Kentucky was not a free state but census records never show Alexander with any slaves and Samuel with just one colored female under age 25 in 1830.

During a November 2002 research trip to Missouri and Kentucky, Charles Strong found in the Breckinridge County archives a booklet titled "Descendants of Thomas Marshall Bedford Co., Va. Plus Hix-Owen-Nicholson & Related Families" compiled by Ralph E. Marshall. Completed September, 1986" Charles copied numerous relevant pages from this booklet, the copies now in the files of Melinda McLemore Strong in San Antonio. This book states that Samuel Marshall was the next to youngest son of Thomas Marshall. It was speculated by the author that "Perhaps Samuel had demonstrated good business sense or was a favorite of his parents as Thomas appointed him the Executor of his Will in October 1819. William and Alexander were several years older than Samuel and lived in the same part the county but were not chosen for that responsibility. Samuel and Alexander must have been fairly close as brothers as they married the Hix sisters and then took their families to Breckinridge county, Kentucky.
Census and birth records indicated that the Samuel and Alexander Marshall families made the move to Kentucky after the 1820 census was taken but probably not later than the spring of 1821. Alexander is recorded as a grocer and shoemaker in his earliest years in Hardinsburg but there is less information on Samuel. The first record of a land transaction for Samuel shows him purschasing 141 1/4 acres of land for $330 from Littleton and Lucretia Martin of February 23, 1825. This farm was about 1 1/2 miles south of Hardinsburg and bordered on land purchased by Alexander in 1829. The 1830 census (below) lists Samuel and Alexander as neighbors and Samuel is shown with one slave. Charles made a xerox of the actual deed, which was in Book G, pages 143 and 144.
They are recorded there in the 1830 census [KY Microfilm No. 16, page 65]. The only other Marshall head of household is his brother, Alexander Marshall.
Samuel Marshall's listing on the 1830 census shows his household consists of one (1) free white male from between the ages of 5-10, and one (1) free white male between the ages of 30 and 40. There are also two (2) free white females under the age of 5, two (2) free white females between the ages of 5-10, and one (1) free white female between the age of 30 and 40.
Fourteen years later, in 1835, they migrated again, this time joining the great four year rush caused by the opening to pioneer settlement of the last Missouri Indian Lands. This great human movement, which ended in 1837, was not unlike the Californian gold rush of later years. This time the Marshalls settled in rural Lewis Co. from where they then moved to LaGrange at a later date, possibly in the 1870s.
A visit to the courthouse at Monticello in Lewis county revealed that Samuel was involved in many land transactions from 1835 to 1870. History books lists him as a settler in 1835 in Union Township 60, Range 6, so he probably farmed just west and perhaps a little south of LaGrange. (Ralph Marshall, p 27).
Census lists him as a retired farmer living in LaGrange with real estate valued at $5,000 in 1860 and $4,000 in 1870. Town of LaGrange currently has about 1,200 population and is located on the Mississippi River in southeast part of Lewis county. No examination has been made of all the recorded land transactions but Samuel and Hannah did sign a deed on March 23, 1867. Then the next record in July 1869 was for sale of land by another person acting as trustee for Samuel, an indication that he was no longer capable of handling his own affairs. Perhaps the last entry was in December 1870 where there was a Sheriff's sale of some lots Samuel owned in LaGrange. No will or probate is on record at the Monticello courthouse so perhaps there was little property left to be disposed of when Samuel and Hannah died. At this point, no cemetery record has been found to indicate when Samuel and Hannah died or where they are buried. It would seem logical that they were either buried in LaGrange or at Asbury Chapel where their son Winfield was laid to rest in 1871. The author walked over the LaGrange cemetery in June 1985 and found not Marshall stones but there were also areas where the markers were broken or had disappeared. (Ralph Marshall, p 27).
The following obituary was found by Mary Pat Strong and Charles R. Strong on an earlier research trip, in June 2002, at the LaGrange Public Library.
The LaGrange (Lewis County, Missouri) Democrat, Nov. 8, 1878.

He was shown as a farmer of Breckinrige, KY, married to Mabel Marshall, who was the informant on his death certificate. His parents were shown as Junius Marshall and Millie Payne.
Shown in 1850 as a 19 year old store clerk in LaGrange. In 1860, Silas was listed as a merchant with real estate of $2,300 and personal property of $10,000. Deed records at Monticello, Missouri show that Silas disposed of his LaGrange interests in October 1870 and May 1871. The final transaction may have been executed during a visit to Lewis county prompted by the death of his brother Winfield in March of 1871. (Ralph Marshall, p 29).
In 1880 and 1900 he can be found in Pulaski County, Arkansas with his family. His occupation was shown as insurance agent on both census enumerations.
He can not be located on the 1910 Census. His sister, Caladonia, who had lived with the family at the time of the prior two census enumerations had moved to Oklahoma, and was living with her niece, Sarah Elizabeth Payne O'Neill. Presumably Silas had moved to California, as the March, 1913 obituary for his sister Caladonia states "the death of a brother in California the week previous caused a nervous shock which hastened the ravages of [her] disease." Her only other brother, Winfield, had died in 1871.

Stephen had a daughter born in 1892 in Colorado but his first wife must have died before 1900 and he came back to LaBelle. By 1910 he has a wife named Mollie (Ollie?) but no more children. (Ralph Marshall, p 29).
Tabitha is not listed in Ralph Marshall's book DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS MARSHALL BEDFORD COUNTY, VIRGINIA. He instead speculates, from circumstatial evidence, that Samuel and Hannah's second daughter may have actually been named Theodosia Marshall of neighboring Marion County, Kentucky.
Ralph E. Marshall is the author of the book, DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS MARSHALL BEDFORD CO., VA PLUS HIX-OWEN-NICHOLSON & RELATED FAMILES (Self Published, September 1986), a copy of which can be found in the Breckinridge County Public Library, Hardinsburg, Kentucky 40143. The author describes how he and several other Marshall descendants hired a professional researcher, Thomas E. Marshall (not related) to research land deeds, marriage records and wills related to the Marshalls of Bedford County, Virginia. The researcher issued a nearly 50 page report in January, 1985, which provided the basis for additional research of the Thomas and Nancy Marshall family.
Ralph Marshall also cites a biographical sketch of Junius Marshall, published in 1887, noting that his grandfather, Thomas Marshall was "A native of Wales, settling in Maryland, where he lived several years, afterward moving to Bedford County, Va."
Ralph Marshall further cites the book EMIGRANTS FROM ENGLAND, 1773-1776, which shows two possible candidates:
Thomas Marshall, age 15, Laborer, Bristol, England to Philadelphia, March 14, 1774 (Bristol is directly across the channel from Cardiff, Wales)
William Marshall, age 50, Mariner, wife and 10 (unnamed) children, London to Maryland on the ship "Nancy," January 16, 1774 (The family could well have had a son named Thomas, and may have lived in Wales and later moved to, or simply departed from, London)
Ralph notes that Thomas Marshall lived in Maryland from about 1774 to 1790. There was a Thomas Marshall in Bedford County, who served in the Militia in 1781, but research has shown that this is another Thomas Marshall. There is no current evidence as to whether our Thomas Marshall served in the Revolution.
Ralph Marshall cites the earliest land record as being in 1803 when Thomas Marshall purchased 250 acres from Joseph Wilson. One of his neighbors was a Thomas Welch. In 1808, Thomas Marshall purchased 67 acres from Thomas Welch which was described as being on the head branches of South Fork of Little Otter River. Thomas and Nancy probably did not live on this property as they sold it three years later to Joseph and Eleanor (Marshall) Van Pelt. In 1804, Thomas and Nancy sold 125 acres to Martin Wells on waters of Little Otter River. (Ralph Marshall, p 17).
Thomas Marshall's will, dated October 1819, reads as follows:
I, Thomas Marshall, do hereby make my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say.
First, I desire that all of my live stock (with the exception of two milch cows, and hogs enough for one years' use to my wife and two more hogs for the suceeding year, all of which are to be reserved to and for her use and are to be at her own and proper disposal) should be immediately sold, and such terms as the legatees may agree upon, and the proceeds as soon as realised, I desire to be equally divided amongst all my children, their heirs, Executors, Administrators or assigns, to be held and enjoyed by them forever....Except that a deduction shall be made from the share of my son ALEXANDER of Twenty five dollars...and also a deduction shall be made from the share of my daugher, ELEANOR VAN PELT of the same sum of Twenty five dollars...and if the share to each, of the above proceeds, should be less than twenty five dollars...it is my desire that the above deduction may be made from other divisions...which are hereinafter mentioned
Secondly, I desire that all of my demands whether in bond or account, may be immediately collected, and an equal division thereof made amongst all my children without any deduction from the share of any of them.
Thirdly, I give and bequeth to my youngest daughter BETSEY, one bed complete with bedstead and furniture and one milch cow, which cow is to be expected as further exception from the above sale.
Fourthly, I give to the use of my wife NANCY during her natural life all the rest of my estate, real and personal, to her own proper use for and during that time, without waste; and after her decease I desire that it may be sold on such terms as a majority of the legatees may agree upon, and for the purpose of making a right to my real estate at the time of the above mentioned sale, I do hereby constitute and appoint my son WILLIAM, or in case of his failure, removal, or death, then I constitute and appoint my son SAMUEL to make and execute such right to the purchaser of said real estate, to him, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, to have and to hold forever. The proceeds of such sale, which is above mentioned, I desire to be equally divided amongst my children, or in case of the death of any of them then to their heirs, per stirpes, their executors, Administrators or assigns forever.
Fifthly, I having executed a title bond to CALEB FERGUSON, for and of land therein mentioned and described, and I having received for the said land due consideration, which consideration is hereby acknowledged to have been received, I do hereby declare it as my last will that my executor may forewith confirm a title to the said Ferguson, his heirs, executors, Administrators and assigns forever. Any thing in the within will to the contrary notwithstanding.
And lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint my son SAMUEL, Executor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other and former wills or testaments by me heretofore made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this nineteenth day of October in the year one thousand eight hundred and nineteen.
Signed, sealed, published and declared as and for the last will and testament of the above named Thomas Marshall, in presence of BENJAMIN CAMPBELL and CHRISTOPHER PRESTON. Signed, Thomas (x) Marshal (Transcribed by Ralph Marshall, p 20).
At a court held for Bedford County at the Courthouse the 25th day of October 1819, This Last Will and Testament of Thomas Marshal, dec'd. was exhibited in Court and proven by the oath of Benjamin Campbell and Christopher Preston, two subscribing witnesses, and ordered to be Recorded. And on the motion of Samuel Martin (Marshall), the executor therein named, who made oath and gave bond and security according to the law, Certificate is granted him for claiming a probate thereof in due form. (Will Book 5, page 120).
Two family trees posted on the RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project show a different ancestry for Thomas Marshall. They show him instead as a descendant of William MARSHALL Born: ABT 1650 in Lancashire, England Death: MAY 1686 in Cox's Choice, Calvert Co, Maryland and his wife Elizabeth COX b: ABT 1650. This is supposedly detailed in the book published by Friends of the Union Church "The Descendants of William Marshall (1650-1686) & Elizabeth Cox (1650-1717)." (One of the trees (mckinziemelanie) with this alternative lineage was submitted to WorldConnect by Melanie McKinzie (McKinzie@bluebon.net).

The item below was discovered by Mary Pat Strong and her dad, Charles R. Strong during research in LaGrange Public Library. They were asked by a historian there if our Samuel Marshall was related to Thomas R. Marshall. It appears he was a great-nephew.
Taken from "History of LaGrange (Lewis County, Missouri) Sesquicentennial, 1832-1982, LaGrange Historical Society, p. 18."
Boyhood home of US Vice President: Thomas R. Marshall (1854-1925) lived in LaGrange 1858-60. Because his father was an abolishionist[sic] and he and he and his neighbors did not agree in this violent period of history, the family fearing bodily harm crossed the Mississippi at night in 1860. Later Mr. Marshall became a reform Governor of the State of Indiana, and a popular Vice-President of the United States under Woodrow Wilson, serving two terms. He was on the threshold of the Presidency when Woodrow Wilson suffered a debilitating stroke. He was an apt phrase maker and his quote "What this country needs is a really good 5 cent cigar" was widely quoted. Mr. Marshall returned to LaGrange as Governor of Indiana and prospective Vice-President of the United States on September 17, 1912. He was received by Missouri and Illinois state officials and a crowd of 3,500 people who gave him a tumultuous welcome.
He served two terms as Vice President under President Woodrow Wilson. The older lady in the picture was Mrs. Carrick, a neighbor, who remembered Thomas Marshall.
A more complete biography from Grolier's online encyclopedia is below:
Thomas Riley Marshall, (1854-1925), the 28th VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. He was born in North Manchester, Ind., on March 14, 1854. He graduated from Wabash College in 1873, studied law, and was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1875, practicing his profession at Columbia City. In 1908 he was elected governor of Indiana; his administration was progressive. Several laws Marshall sponsored, including an employers' liability law and a child labor law, were enacted, but he failed to have a new state constitution adopted.
At the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore in 1912, Marshall was the favorite-son candidate of Indiana for the presidency. When Woodrow WILSON was nominated for that office, Marshall was chosen for the vice presidency. Reelected in 1916, he served with Wilson until 1921. As presiding officer of the SENATE, he enjoyed much popularity, becoming known for his humorous remarks. In 1917, during a Senate debate on the country's needs, he said, "What this country needs is a good five-cent cigar."
While Wilson attended the peace conference after World War I, Marshall presided over cabinet meetings, the first vice president to do so. During Wilson's serious illness, beginning in late 1919, Marshall considered the possibility of declaring himself acting president. But he decided not to do so, partly because he feared that his action would divide the country. He died in Washington, D.C., on June 1, 1925.

William Marshall was married twice, having five children by his first wife and seven by his second wife. A listing of his descendants can be found on the Draper/Marshall of Botetourt and Bedford Counties, Virginia tree at the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project. (Compiler: Cecile Caldwell email: ccaldwel@etcrier.net)
The land records for William begin in 1805, when he purchased 137 acres on waters of Little Otter River. He and Sarah sold half of this land in 1815. Then they purchased 286 3/4 acres on Reed and Wolf Creeks in 1819. After William died the commissioner of his estate sold 271 1/2 acres in 1841 described as on headwaters of Reed Creek, a north branch of Goose Creek. (Ralph Marshall, p 17).
The 1810 census (in which he is listed as William Marsh) indicates he had 4 sons and 1 daughter, but no wife at that time. (Ralph Marshall, p 22).
Ralph Marshall cites Harry Fulwiler's book GATEWAY TO THE SOUTHWEST which includes a brief biography of the Marshall family on pages 739-740: "William Marshall was born in Maryland, a soldier of the War of 1812 in Captain John P. Gray's Bedford County Company of the Bedford Regiment, assigned to regiment at Camp Bottom's Bridge. He married Sarah Pollard (1795-1864), a daughter of Thomas and Keziah Hunt Pollard of Bedford County, Va. They had at least eleven children. Eight sons and three daughters are named in the administration of his estate in Bedford County Will Book 12, page 460. At the time of his death in 1839, he owned 69 1/4 acres and eleven slaves. One man, Sam and his wife Ann, and child Elizabeth were valued at $550; one man, Anderson, value $600; one boy Jacob $50; one girl Harriet $450; one girl Matilda $225; one girl Charlotte $375; one girl Carolina $270; one boy Jim $231, and one girl Martha $150. He had a "water grist" and saw mill on the waters of Reed Creek. The Marshalls were diligent in their care of their slaves, always sure they were well cared for in sickness and in health. They did their best for them and good feelings and kindnesses were mutual. This was evidenced by the fact that after freedom was given them, they stayed on with future generations." (Ralph Marshall, p 22).
Ralph Marshall further noted that the estate inventory and appraisal are recorded in Will Book 10, page 132. The division of the estate in 1845 did not include the name of daughter Cassondra who married Goodrich Moore in 1833 and was living next door to other family members in the 1850 census. There is nothing to indicate an intentional omission of her name from the list of heirs.
On his death certificate, he was listed as William Marshall, single, with his occupation not shown. His parents were names as June S Marshall and Artemisa Payne of Kentucky. The informant was J. B. Gibson of Irvington, KY.
Bill graduated from law school in Indianapolis, graduating in 1930. He was elected Prosecutor in soon afterwads elected Judge of Rush County, Indiana. He served for 33 1/2 years, retiring in December 1969.

Ralph notes that Alexander Marshall was surety for (the marriage) for his sister, Wilmoth. (Ralph Marshall, p 16).
Wilmouth (Willey) married Caleb Ferguson (also spelled Fergerson) in September 1809. Census shows 5 sons and 5 daughters were born to this union by 1830. Bedford county marriage records show 4 Ferguson boys (marrying) from 1839 to 1850, but don't know how many of them belonged to Caleb and Wilmouth as there were other Ferguson families in the county. (Ralph Marshall, p 23)
The 1850 census shows her as age 56 and born in Virginia which would place her between Alexander and Samuel. Was most likely the first child born in Bedford county after the move from Maryland.

Listed on the 1850 Missouri census as a carpenter in LaGrange. In 1860, Winfield and family were farming near LaGrange, probably living on his parents farm as Samuel had retired to LaGrange by then. Somewhere around 1868 Winfield moved farther west in Lewis County to Salem Township with a LaBelle address. He was buried in the Asbury Chapel Cemetery (Ralph Marshall, p 28).

[Excerpts of the column written by Virgie Collier Speights]
Mrs. Alpha Martin Cooper, who soon will be 77 years old, is in feeble health and has had a peck of trouble, but still has spunk and feels she also had a bushel of blessings.
The daughter of William Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Jordan Martin, she was born in a log cabin which was soon replaced by a huge double-penned, hand hewn log dwelling with wide hall and front and back porches, which was within two miles of where she has lived all her life, except for a brief scurry into West Texas in search of greener pastures.
With seven boys and six girls, the Martins, who were trying to wrest a living from the reluctant land, needed every hand....As soon as she was old enough, Mrs. Cooper was picking cotton alongside her older brothers and sisters...
Her parents were born in the area in which they lived, but their parents had come from Mississippi. Her grandparents were Thomas Jefferson Martin and Rebecca Richardson on her fathers side, and Lewis Jordan and Josephine Letney on her mothers side...(she was schooled) in a one-room log building, called Pleasant Grove located near Pineland, which is still standing. Her teachers included Lena Williams, a sister of the late Sim Williams, Tom Sutton and a Mr. McLanahan. James Scott Cooper, whom she married on 28 May 1905, attended the same school.

David Edward Martin was born June 11, 1960 and joined the presence of our Lord November 13, 2016. David was the fifth child of the late Emile E. Martin III and Amanda Zahn Martin. In addition to his mother, he is survived by four brothers and one sister, Edward Zahn Martin (Cynthia), Johnette L. Martin, Jay Emile Martin, Robert Dale Martin (Mary) and Gregory Frank Martin, and six nieces and nephews; Jean Paul, Jonathan (Sandy), Elizabeth, Justen, Jeremy, and Emily. His family was the center of his world, and enjoyed every family social and outing including the company of his parents, brothers and sister, sisters-in-law, Aunts, Uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and their spouses and children. David was a lifetime student of St. Michael's Special School, and worked in the Joy Center from which he retired in 2014 and the life that he loved. He cherished his classmates and his work, and deeply loved his mentor Sister M. Lillian McCormack and all of his dedicated teachers. Throughout his adult life, he served as an altar boy in the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. David was a gift to all who knew him, and was treasured as a beloved member of his community. His talent in this life was loving all who came into his path, including family, acquaintances and strangers. By the grace of God, he had two wonderful parents, a fruitful and happy life, and possessed an indomitable spirit. He had a sweet nature and gentle manner, was kind and caring of others, and loved animals, especially Gabriel, Leontine, and Sweetheart. He never uttered a discouraging word but found himself vexed and expressed anger only in understandable situations, when LSU or the Saints lost a game. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 8963 Hwy. 23, Belle Chasse, LA. 70037, on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 12 noon. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Metairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Michael's Special School are appreciated, 1522 Chippewa St. New Orleans, LA 70130. The following biography is courtesy of Melba Gene McLemore, from a book titled "Mississippi" by Dunbar Rowland, pages 537 through 539:
Martin, E. J., one of the representative citizens and influential business men of Meridian, is a member of one of the sterling pioneer families of Mississippi, with whose history the name has been identified for more than seventy years. he was born on the homestead plantation in Clarke County, Miss., on Sept. 16, 1854, being the only child of Norman and Eleanor (Chapman) Martin, both of whom were born in North Carolina. Norman Martin had previously married Anne Morrison, who bore seven children and who died in Georgia. Of the children of the first marriage three are living. Mr. Martin came from Georgia to Mississippi about 1830 and located in Clarke county, where he became a succesful planter and stock-grower, owning a large amount of land and about one hundred slaves prior to the Civil war. He was a man of distinctive honor and integrity and held the respect of all who knew him, while he was public spirited in his attitude and a man of influence in his community, though never active in the domain of practical politics. he died in Clarke county in 1883 and his widow passed away, in Lauderdale county in 1886, the former having been a member of the Methodist and the latter of the Baptist church. Mr. Martin was one of the board of commissioners of Lauderdale county at the time of its organization, having had landed interests here, since the same was originally a portion of Clarke county,
E. J. Martin, whose name initiaties this review, received his early training in the schools of Clarke county and later ws a student in Mississippi college, at Clinton. he assisted in the management of the home plantation until he had attained to the legal majority when he engaged in the same line of enterprise on his own responsibility, while he has ever since been identfied with the agricultural interests of this section, being the owner of well improved plantations in Lauderdale, Clarke and Kemper counties, ans also of other valuable realty, in Meridian and elsewhere. In 1880 he removed from his farm to Meridian, where he held the office of assistant postmaster until 1886, while he was appointed to the office of postmaster in the second adminstration of President Cleveland, serving from 1892 to 1896. In 1886 Mr.Martin was one of the organizers of the Progress Manufacturing Company, later the Martin Machine Works, which built up a large industry in the manufacturing of cotton and hay presses, engines, boilers and general lines of machinery and continued to serve as president of this company until 1902, when the business was sold to the present owners, the Wetherbee Brothers. Since retiring from the active administration of the affairs of this business, which was built up largely though his efforts, Mr. Martin has devoted his attention to the management of his farming interests, and in 1906 he organized the firm of E. J. Martin & Sons, engaged in general machinery and mill supply business giving special attention to the sale of portable saw mills. In politics, Mr. Martin is a conservative Democrat, and he has shown a loyal interest in public affairs in his State and county. For nine consecutive years he served as a member of the city council of Meridian and was president of the same. For four years he administered the fiscal affairs of Lauderdale county in the capacity of treasurer, and he has been given other testimonials of popular confidence and regard. He has served as delegate to county, congressional and State conventions of his party, and the interest of the party cause has been of close concern to him, while liberality and progressive ideas have ever characterized him as a citizen and business man.
Both he and his wife are valued members of the Baptist church, and in a fraternal way he has attained the thirty-second degree of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masonry, in which the honored fraternity he is an enthusiastic devotee and one prominent in the various departments of the York and Scottish Rite bodies. He is past master of his lodge, grand senior warden of Mississippi, past high priest of his chapter, thrice illustrious master of the council, passt eminent commander of the commandery of Knights Templars, past potentate in the temple of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, while he has held office in the various bodies of the Scottish Rite. He was a prominent delegate to the triennial conclave of Knights Templars held in the city of San Francisco in September, 1904, in which connection he had management of the excursion trains which transported the Mississippi delegation to the coast. He has been five times elected a member of the imperial council of the Mystic Shrine in North America.
In November, 1874, Mr. Martin was united in marriage to Miss Jennie McLemore, a daughter of Capt. Caleb H. McLemore and Louise (Smith) McLemore, well known citizens of Lauderdale county. Captain McLemore was a valiant defender of the Confederate cause in the Civil war, having been captain of his company in the Thirty-seventh Mississippi infantry and serving during the entire course of the war, while he took part in every battle in which his command was engaged, including the battles around Cornith and in the Georgia campaign from Dalton as well as battles of Franklin, Nashville and Shiloh. He was enlisted as a lietenant of the company, and when its captain was killed in the first battle in which it was engaged, Captain McLemore assumed command and remained at the head of his company until the close of the war.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin have five children; Percy L. , Louisiana agent for E. J. Martin & Sons, resides in Monroe, LA,; Edwin M., and traveling salesman resides in Meridian; Mary is the wife of John R. Moore, who is engaged in the commission business in Meridian; Robert E. is associated with his father in the machinery business, and Hugh S. is attending school.

When he registered for the World War I draft, he was a resident of Hemphill, and working as a barber in his own shop. He was married, and was described as tall and of medium build, with brown eyes and black hair.
She appears to have been married and widowed at a young age, as on the 1870 census she is shown Elizabeth NEWTON, age 19. Also living in the household was her future husband, 23 year old John H. Knox, working as a farm laborer.
Elizabeth is said to have been buried in the Harper Springs Cemetery, Huttig, Union County, Arkansas, on 3 Feb 1934.

Emile E. Martin III, a lawyer who never shrank from opposing the Perez political machine that ran Plaquemines Parish for decades, died Monday (Feb. 17) at his Belle Chasse home. He was 92.
"He was always anti-Perez before it was safe to be that way," said Michael Kirby, a retired state appeals judge. "He had this passion to see things done right and to take up for the little guy against the giants."
Nothing daunted him, Kirby said. "He was never afraid to take on anybody or anything. He might be wrong, but he'd go down fighting. . . . He always fought for what was right."
Mr. Martin locked horns with Leander Perez, the family's patriarch, over desegregation because Mr. Martin believed schools should be integrated, said Johnette Martin, his daughter. "He said we have to provide an equal education for black children. That was the ending point of my father's working with Leander Perez."
He lost his job as the parish's inheritance-tax collector, Johnette Martin said, and his law practice suffered because people were afraid their cases would be doomed if Mr. Martin represented them.
But he carried on, frequently representing poor people who paid him in produce because they had no money, Johnette Martin said.
"We would see people come to the back porch and leave a box of produce to pay my dad," she said. "Once he was paid with a freezer-ready butchered cow.
"My father was a good man. He cared about people."
Mr. Martin, who was elected to a state district judgeship in 1982, after the Perez family lost its clout, was a native of Port Sulphur whose father served on the parish police jury.
He was a baker with the Seabees on a ship in the South Pacific during World War II. After leaving the service, he earned undergraduate and law degrees at LSU and set up a law practice in Plaquemines Parish.
Mr. Martin ran for the Legislature in 1959, but he and the other members of his ticket lost because they were running against the Perez machine.
He kept practicing law until he was elected to the 25th Judicial District bench, where he served one eight-year term.
Among the lawyers who appeared before him was Mark Pivach, a former neighbor.
"He was always fair," Pivach said. "He would always listen and do what he thought was right."
Mr. Martin resumed his law practice after leaving the bench.
Throughout his career, he was adamant once he took a position, his daughter said. "He had the heart of a lion."
Although Mr. Martin could be firm, he had a wry sense of humor, Kirby said. "At one point, his staff pitched in and bought him a sweatshirt that said, 'Grumpy.' He said, 'I'm not grumpy; I'm irascible.'"
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and the state and parish bar associations. He also worked with Boy Scout Troop 106, and he was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his wife, Amanda Zahn Martin; five sons, Edward Zahn Martin, Jay Edgar Martin, Robert Dale Martin, David Edward Martin and Gregory Frank Martin, all of Belle Chasse; a daughter, Johnette Leontine Martin of New Orleans; a brother, Ray Martin of Belle Chasse; a sister, Mary Lou Martin of Belle Chasse; and six grandchildren.
A Mass will be said Thursday (Feb. 20) at noon at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Belle Chasse. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m.
Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery.
Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

J.M. Martin to Tom Adams The State of Texas County of Knox

Also South half of Lot No. 8, in Block No 6, and South half Lot No. 11 in Block No. 7.
To Have and to Hold the above described premises, together with all and singular the rights and appurtenances thereto in anywise belonging unto the said Tom Adams, his heirs and assigns, Forever. And I do hereby bind myself and my heirs, executors and administrators, to Warrant and Forever Defend all and singular the said premises unto the said Tom Adams, his heirs and assigns against every person whosoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same or any part thereof.
Witness my hand at Benjamin, Texas this 12th day of January A.D. 1897 signed...J.M. Martin
Lynell Cordell located the land record above, but was unable to locate a J.M. Martin in the cemetery records for Knox County, although she did find a reference to a Sarah Martin buried in the Johnson Cemetery in Munday, Knox County, but with no dates. She did not visit the cemetery. It is possible J.M. and Sarah divorced, as he was not listed in the home with Sarah and their children at the time of the 1900 census. Sarah was listed as widowed, but may have instead been divorced.
Lynell Cordell located the following death record for a J.M. Martin:
Texas Death Index, 1903-2000
Name: J. M. Martin
Death Date: 17 May 1943
Death County: Palo Pinto
Certificate: 24046
Informant on death certificate #24046 was Glenn Martin (son) of Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto Co. TX. He's buried in the Jacksboro Cem.
She also found a 1920 census in Jack Co. with J.M. Martin with wife Stella and two step-sons named Fowler.
Then again in Jack Co. in 1930 it was Moses J. Martin and Stella. He first married at age 26 which fits the 1892 marriage date of J. M. and Sarah.
I just put this part in his notes for now but I would bet on the death record, especially since his son Glenn, with two n's, was the informant. David Adams was supposed to be in Parker or Palo Pinto county also.

AKA shown as Louis/Lewis Cass Martin. Shown simply as "L C Martin" on the death certificates of his daughters Mary and Lavisa. The death certificate of youngest daughter, Violet, instead lists him as Royal Casie Martin. It appears that informant in that case may have been assuming that Violet's brother, Royal Casie Martin, was an exact namesake of his father?
Said to be a child of Thomas Jefferson Martin and Rebecca Richardson of Sabine County by most researchers. Anita Sterling, on the "Anderson Family Tree" at Ancestry.com, shows his parents as Thomas Franklin Martin and Rebecca Richardson.
He and his wife Elizabeth lived next door to Thomas and Rebecca at the time of the 1880 census. Additionally, a Case Martin was shown as a brother of Harriett Martin Strickland, a daughter of Tom and Beckie Martin, in a newspaper column about the upcoming birthday of her son Rev. Bob Strickland in the mid 1960's.
