Beautiful Life Ended
Mrs. Harry Young's Death Is Mourned by the Entire Community

One of the saddest deaths which has taken place in recent years in our community occured at the home of Harry Young last Monday noon, when his most estimable companion passed away after a brief illness of ten days duration. Mrs. Young was afflicted with heart trouble for many years but at no time did her relatives consider her condition necessarily serious. In fact, under ordinary circumstances she might have lived for many years to come. Unfortunately, on Wednesday, July 15, she went to the woods to pick berries and in the evening she attended a ladies reception where she became frightened--and the following Friday her condition was such that medical aid became nessary. Her delicate condition had been overtaxed and after a few days suffering which at times was of an excruciating character, the brittle ties of life were broken and her burdened spirit fled to the land of rest. The writer of this was acquainted with Mrs. Young from early childhood, she was a kind, sweet spirited girl, to whom parents, brothers, sisters, and all who learned to know her were greatly attached. Her death is a grevious loss. She will be missed not only the the immediate relatives but by a large circle of friends.

Mrs. Maude Young was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Maier and was born at the Joseph Striffler farm home, March 28, 1880. She was married to Harry Young, January 1, 1902. In early life she became a member of the Evangelical church, later she became an active worker in Sunday School and Young People's Alliance, and only recently she joined with the Rebecca lodge of Cass City. The funeral although private was largely attended and was held on Wednesday, Dr. Gifford assisted by Rev. Soldan, officiating. The floral offerings were beautiful and showed how highly the deceased was esteemed by her many friends. From outside of the city there was in attendance, Mrs. Cutting and Frank Young and little daughter of Detroit, a sister and brother of Mr. Young.

"19 SEP 1849 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana, probably the first settler in the vicinity of Many was William Mains, who settled the plantation now owned by the heirs of Louis and Frances Buvens. Mr. Mains was born in North Carolina and in early life was left an orphan. He was kidnapped by some traders and carried to the North and apprenticed to a carpenter and learned to be an expert woodworker. On reaching manhood he went to Pike County, Mississippi, where he was married, and, in 1830, moved with his family to Louisiana, near the present town of Many. Indians still roamed the woods, and wild animals were numerous. He was compelled to cut his way through a dense cane brake to make a clearing for the house which he constructed. Mr. Mains was the father of seven children, [NOTE: actually, he was the father of 13 children, 7 sons] one of whom, Noah, is still living, a resident of Pleasant Hill. William, the oldest son, who shared with his father the trials of pioneer life, was born in 1817 in Pike County, Mississippi, and died June 26, 1904. During the Mexican War he moved army equipment from Fort Jesup to the old Block House on the Sabine River. At his death he was survived by two sons, W.C. and Rich Mains, and two daughters Madames W.L. Shull and Asa Vines."

13244 I43107  Mangum  James Nye  4 Apr 1907  25 Nov 1987  Census records show he usually went by his middle name of Nye.

He and Eunice share a double gravestone at the Chilton Cemtery in Big Sandy. Also sharing a double marker at this same cemetery are Mancial M. Mangum and Julia Isabelle Mangum. There are no other Mangum burials at Chilton on FindAGrave. These appear to be Nye's parents, as the 1930 federal census enumeration of Big Sandy, Upshur County, Texas shows a household consisting of 50 year old M. M. and Belle Mangum, along with 23 year old Nye and 8 year old Rose. All four of them were born in Texas, and M. M. Mangum was the proprietor of an auto repair shop, with 23 year old Nye being a laborer at this shop. This enumeration was done on April 17, 1930, just about four months prior to the date Nye and Eunice were said to have married.

Benjamin is shown as a son of Joel James MANIRE and Elizabeth Mariah POATS, all of whom also have memorials on FindAGrave. Arthur's tombstone is engraved as Arthur D. Funeral services for Tom will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter. Father Steve Thomlison will officiate the services.

Burial will be held in the Exeter Cemetery following the funeral service.

Memorials are directed to the St. Stephen's Catholic Church or the Exeter Volunteer Fire Department.

Thomas Burton Manning was born in Sawyer, NE to Earl and Clara (Biba) Manning on April 7,1930. He passed away on August 3, 2016 in Lincoln, NE. As a very young boy, Tom lived in Sawyer until 1934, when his father moved his elevator business, house, and barn to Burress, NE. He was then raised in Burress, where he also attended country school. He attended high school at Exeter Public School in Exeter, NE, where he graduated with his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Murphy in 1947. He briefly attended business school in Lincoln before returning to Burress, joining the family grain business. In the summer of 1949, he and Marilyn were married. They resided in Exeter for one year, then moved to Burress, where they lived for the remainder of their 65 years of marriage. It is there that they raised their eight children and taught them by example to be hardworking and honest. Tom felt that one of the most important gifts he could give his children was a good education.

Tom and Marilyn were united in marriage at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Exeter on June 11th, 1949. They held their wedding dance at the Burress Dance Hall. Shortly after, the historic hall was filled with grain. They spent their Honeymoon in Grand Lake, Colorado. Tom and Marilyn loved and respected each other in all walks of life. Together they shared an everlasting love.

Instilling the importance of family was very important to them. Most years they would take the family to Grand Lake in the summer to enjoy the beauty of the mountains. One of Tom's greatest joys was taking his children on mountain hikes to the ranger station on top of Shadow Mountain. His last mountain hike was in 2014 at the age of 84. It was a one-mile hike, which included one of his favorite points of nature, Adams Falls. His final trip to Grand Lake was last September 2015.

Tom loved to spend time outdoors, whether it was for work or for pleasure. He enjoyed river fishing, gardening, hiking, a lifetime of scooping grain, and endless mowing! His dedication to neighbors, customers, friends, and family was ever present. He will be remembered as an honest, hardworking, kind, gentle, and caring man. He will be eternally loved, and forever missed.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, daughter Clara, and brother, Richard (Dick). He is survived by sons Thomas David Manning, and wife Bette, Fairmont, NE, Chris Manning and wife Brenda, Exeter, NE, Mark Manning and wife Leanne, Crete, NE, Kent Manning and wife Cindy Fairmont, NE, Matthew Manning and wife Heather, Lincoln NE; daughters, Melinda Hofferber, Westminster, CO, Jennifer Manning, Lincoln, NE; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Miss Mark arrived at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Mark, in Cass city on Tuesday accompanied by two classmates, the Missed Jeanne Otterbeing and Deloris Stepanovich, both of whom claim Grand Rapids as their home. Thursday, all three young ladies left for Grand Rapids where Miss Mark will spend the week end and then will come to her home here and remain until May 1, when she will return to Providence Hospital.
