Some researchers show her as the daughter of Caleb Hill and Mary Flynt, and the sister of Nancy Perry Hill, who married Amos's brother, Richard McLemore. Others show her as Elizabeth Hill Johnson or Johnston, with their marriage taking place in Giles County, Tennessee. The Rev. William McLemore shows that according to correspondence and DAR records submitted to him by Joyce Sentell of Mobile, Alabama in 1996, her maiden name was Johnson. In May, 2008, Rev. Bill emailed that "An e-mail from a Ron Henson, 12 Feb 1998 says her surname was Johnston. She was born 15 Feb 1802 and died 31 July 1881. Their children were Albert Gallatin 1825, Richard, Caleb, John b. 1831, Catherine b. 1832, Nancy b. 1838, Elvira and Bettie. Harry McLemore of Jackson, MS, wrote me, "Amos lived in Clarke Co., in 1850. He later moved to Lauderdale Co. near Meridian and one time he lived in Copiah County."
Elizabeth was born in Tennessee, near the Alabama state line. The family considered themselves a part of the community of Lexington, Alabama. Thus the seemingly inconsistent answers to the state of birth.
His Memorial page at FindAGrave, created by Maryanne McCracken Highley and maintained by Dave Johnston, has the following brief biography of Samuel:
S. C. Johnston, Jr. was the husband of Mary McGuire/McGwier. They were married 23 Jan 1859 in Lawrence Co., TN. He was a soldier (CSA) of the Civil War, serving in Co D, 32nd Tenn Infanty. He was captured along with his brother William K at the battle of Ft. Donelson, taken by train to a POW camp in Lafayette, Tippecanoe, Indiana, and was transferred to Camp Morton, Indiana. He signed a loyalty oath and walked home to his home on the TN/AL state line. He was very prolific, with 12 children born to his first wife, and 4 by his second wife, Amanda Comer. He lived on his father's farm on Second Creek and the AL/TN State line, which he got once the Mr. Gibson who had purchased it from his dad became delinquent on his payments.

Mrs. Ada Gentry Death
Victim Resident of County 40 Years
Passed Away Tuesday Night. Funeral Services This Thursday.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ada Gentry, 49 years of age, were held at the First Baptist Church at 2:00 o'clock this Thursday afternoon. Rev. J. J. Ward officiated, with Rev. T. P. Haskins assisting. Arrangements were in charge of Beeson Grantham. Mrs. Gentry passed away Tuesday night at 11 o'clock, at her home about 12 miles east of Duncan. Her 19 year old son, Glen, was killed in an automobile accident east of the city about a year and a half ago. The husband, Frank Gentry, died of pneumonia last June. The deceased was one of the early settlers of what is now Stephens County. She was a daughter of W. S. (Star) Jones, a Confederate veteran of the Civil War, who now lives in Marlow. Benjamin Dwight writes that "He obtained his education by his own efforts. He was grad. at Jefferson Med. Coll., in Philadelphia, March, 1827, and in 1833 went to Texas and became a surgeon in the Texas Army, and was in the battle of San Jacinto (Apr. 21, 1836). After Texas became a republic he was sent as minister to the U.S. govt. He was also representative and senator in the Congress of Texas, secretary of state, and President of the Republic (Dec. 1844 - Feb. 1846). During his administration the public finances were managed with great skill and economy; old debts were all paid off and a surplus laid by (beside meeting current expenses), sufficient to provide for all needful expenditures for some years to come. The frontiers were efficiently protected against Mexicans and Indians. Law was enforced and justice, civil and criminal, was maintained. No expedition for glory or plunder occurred; immigration was large and active; the public lands were husbanded; common school education was promoted; and a state constitution was formed by a convention called for the purpose by President Jones, and made the fundamental law of the state by subsequent annexation of Texas to the United States. He was a zealous mason and was one of the five masons to organize the first masonic lodge in Texas. He was the first grand master of the Lodge, for which a dispensation was procured from the Grand Lodge of Louisiana. From 1846 to 1858, he resided on his farm which he called Barrington, engaged in agriculture and education of his children."

A daughter of a daughter a Ida Jones, who would be a direct female descendant of Mary, the wife of Daniel Morgan, served as an mtDNA donor to determine if Mary was indeed native american, as had been widely rumored. The mtDNA proved to be HV, or Helena, a primarily European haplogroup, most prevalent in Western Europe. The single difference from the Cambridge Reference Sequence was CRS 16311 C. The HV results preclude Native American ancestry on the matrilineal track -- the haplogroup would have to be A, B, C, D or a variety of X to show matrilineal ancestry as Native American. Therefore it appears that Mary Morgan's mother WAS NOT a full blooded Native American. It is still possible, however, she had native american ancestors, but if so it was not through her direct maternal line.
