Jacob Luurszen and Stijntje Douwes had a son, Luur Jacobsen (son of Jacob) baptized in the Dutch Reform Church of New Amsterdam (NYC) in 1650. Only the father's name was recorded at that baptism. After the death of his father, Luur moved with his mother and stepfather to the area of Kingston.
from: Family History Our Dutch Heritage A Research Synopsis of the Kuykendall Family: Kuykendall, Kirkendall, Cuykendall, Coykendall, etc Compiled by Gene Kuykendall, 1997 http://w3.gorge.net/forest/FAMILY%20HISTORY%20BY%20GENE.htm
Emily Stowell notes that Luur signed his name using the toponym "van Kuykendall" only once that is known of, and that was at the christening of his youngest daughter, Seyte in 1706.
THE NAME KUYKENDALL, ITS ORIGIN, DERIVATION AND MEANING.
For a number of years I have occasionally met a person who formerly lived in Holland, and on hearing the name Kuykendall, the first thing almost that was said, was, "Your name is Dutch, or of Dutch origin." Several have told me they used to know people of our name in Holland, but that it was spelled a little differently there. Mr. A. J. F. Van Laer, Archivist for the state of New York, and New York State Library, writing to me in regard to the ancient home of the Kuykendall family, and the name, said: "I suspect that Kijk-in-'t-dal is a locality near Wageningen, which lies on a high hill on the bank of the Rhine, and commands a fine view of the river." In a letter written later he says: "There seems to be no doubt that your family originally came from Wageningen. I am still inclined to think that Kijk-in-'t-dal may have been the form from which Kuykendall is derived, because there is an elevation near Wageningen, called Wageningsche Berg, from which one obtains a beautiful view of the valley of the Rhine, and secondly there are other names of similar construction in the Netherlands, the most striking being that of Kijk-in-de vegt, which is borne by a family in the province of Overijessel."
In relation to this subject, Mr. L. P. de Boer, historian of Dutch American families, wrote me in March, 1913: "I have struck analogies of the name Kuykendall in one of the Dutch periodicals, headed, "Rare and Curious Names," a locality, Kykenweide, near Overyossel, is mentioned to have existed in 1460-1496, 'Mead on View,' or 'View of the Mead.' I now remember to have seen a street in Groningen called 'de Ky-in-Jat Straat,' or "Look-in-the-gate' street. These examples strengthen my belief in the etymology of the name as suggested by Mr. Van Laer and you." Kijk is an old Dutch word or form for view, and is pronounced as if spelled Kuyk or Kike. Mr. Van Laer says the derivation from Kijk-in-'t-dal, which in Gelderland dialect may well have been spelled Kuykendal or Kuukendal, seems altogether most likely.
Mr. Dingman Versteeg, genealogist for the Holland Society, says "That so-called Scotch tradition was simply invented afterwards, to account for the misspelling Kirkendall." It may help also to account for the mis-pronunciation of the name, for many even of those who spell it Kuykendall or otherwise, pronounce it as if spelled Kirkendall. Mr. Van Laer says "The explanation of the name meaning Chicken valley is absurd, for if named from a valley where young chickens abounded, it would be more likely Kippendal (chickendale). There are several instances in the early records which would tend to show that the Kuykendall ancestors lived at or near Wageningen. We find Urbanus Luursen signed his name Urbanus Luursen van Wageningen, and the name of our ancestor appears in a power of attorney given by himself, signed "Jacob Luyersen van Wageningen."
At the time of the advent of our ancestor in America there were in use what are called patronymics, that is, father names. The family name corresponded to what is the surname now, but was often the name of the ancestral home, and was preceded by the word van, meaning from. If the family had adopted the name of the place where their fathers lived, then the Van was begun with a capital V, for instance Van Etten, Van Meteren. Many patronymics had a suffix that meant son, or son of. For instance a man who was the son of a father named William was called William's son, which later became Williamson, the family name. Thus we have the names Johnson, Peterson, Davidson, and many others. In the case of Irish and Scotch names there were many that were preceded by Fitz or Mac, which being added to other names, as Simmons, Hugh, Donald, made Fitzsimmons, Fitzhugh, McDonald or Macdonald, the terms Fitz and Mac meaning son or son of. In all these instances and many other, if the families should now undertake to trace their names back to their original formation, they would come to a person bearing the name Simmons, Hugh, or Donald, or otherwise, and if they wished to go still further back, they would have to seek some other proof or data to enable them to proceed.
It appears that the Dutch, along about the time our ancestors came to America, preferred the use of the patronymic or father name. Mr. Versteeg, genealogist for the Holland Society of New York, mentioned before, who was for some years the editor and publisher of "The Netherland Register," had in one of the numbers of the magazine, a very interesting and instructive article pertinent to this subject. Speaking of changes of names he said: "The Coykendall and Kuykendall families both trace their origin to Jacob Luurszen, but it was more than half a century after his death that his descendants began the use of the name Van Kuykendaal. The people were averse to using the family name, unless the person occupied a very prominent position." While, as Mr. Versteeg says, the family name Van Kuykendaal does not appear until fifty years after the death of our Holland ancestor, the evidence as to our lineal descent from Jacob Luurszen cannot be doubted. It is clear from the record that our ancestor's name was Luurszen. The Kuykendall family name is not peculiar or different in this respect from many other names found all over the country.Take the name Roosevelt, for instance. The ex-president's ancestors came from Holland, and as it happened, from the same province of Gelderland as our Kuykendall ancestor. The Roosevelt name as found in early New York records was Claes Martinszen. His name is usually found written this way, and only twice as Claes Martinszen Van Roosevelt. The family dropped the Martinszen and the Van, and adopted Roosevelt as the family name, so that now it is Roosevelt (Rose-field), the locality in Holland from whence the family came. In precisely the same way the Kuykendall name was Luurszen, and our ancestor's name was Jacob Luurszen (Van Kuykendaal), as has been shown. Our people dropped the Van and the patronymic Luurszen, and retained the present family name Kuykendall.

Francis "Linda" James followed her soulmate and beloved husband, Kurt Butler, to be in the arms of our Savior February 3, 2023. There she met her mama Arletha "Arlie" Cooper, daddy Jesse Howard James, brother little Cole Harold, and 3 beautiful sisters, Bennie "Neni" Adkins, Betty Lou Foster and Dorothy Juan Hart. What a reunion!
She is survived by her three daughters, Linda (Terry) McCue, Toni (Matt) Wolff, and Angel James Butler; 8 adored grandchildren who know her as mamalynn: Joshua, Wesley, Rachel Lynn, Le'Chelle, Erica, Brooke, Elijah, and Wyatt; as well as many great grandchildren.
Mom was a devoted, mother, wife, mamalynn, aunt, cousin and friend. And to some strangers, their "angel." Mom was always there anytime she was needed. Only a phone call and drive away. She is the strongest person I know. Even in her illness and final earthly days, she declared, "I dont need medicine; Jesus Christ is all I need!" A woman of unwavering faith. We are so thankful she brought us up in the truth. She was our nurture, rock, shield, best friend, confidant, cheerleader and compass. To this day, she is still pointing us to Christ. Amen. Thank you, Mommy! I thank God for you and miss you every second of every day.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Starr Funeral Home Chapel in Hemphill, Texas.
Visitation will begin one hour prior to service time.

Called Lillie. Fay Payne Yeager has a photograph of Thomas B and his second wife Lillie with their first child, little Clyde Marion, taken in an Indian Territory studio in about 1900. Lillie has an Indian appearance but was listed as "white" on the 1910 census. Additionally, she was not listed as a citizen of The Five Civilized Tribes.
Later correspondence from her only surving child, Marguerite Ray, however, indicates she may indeed have been Native American. Marguerite wrote both Bessie (Gentry) Payne and Lois Payne in 1950, stating "I had my proof of heirship papers filled out in Duncan and took them by Muskogee to the Indian Agency." She also refers to help she received from Baron McClendon in this process. However, Marguerite may have been filing for benefits based solely on her father's enrollment in the Chickasaw tribe by marriage to his first wife, and not on her mother, Lillian.
This is Lillie's census listing at the time of the 1910 census, shortly before she died:

DUNCAN WEEKLY BANNER Obituaries and Death Notices
November 25, 1910
The Banner, in common with the many friends of the relatives, is grieved at the announcement of the death, on Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock, of Mrs. Lillian Payne at the family home east of Duncan. She was sick only a few hours, acute conjestion being the cause of her death. Five (sic) children, the youngest five years of age, survive her. She was the wife of T. B. Payne, brother of W.W. Payne, who died about two years ago. Interment was in the Marlow cemetery yesterday afternoon.
The inscription on her headstone reads:
Honored beloved and We??
Here Mother lies
They who knew her best will
Bless her Name
and keep her memory dear
While life shall last
She MIGHT have been the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth JAMES, who were listed on the 1900 Indian Territory, Chickasaw Nation, census as follows:
JAMES, Edward Feb 1858 Kentucky Kentucky Kentucky
JAMES, Elizabeth Jan 1860 Texas Missouri Missouri Mother of 11 children, 10 surviving
9 children were listed in the home with the James family. Perhaps Lillie, who married Thomas Bunker Payne in 1899, was the 10th child, the only one not living at home. I was unable to find this family in 1880 to confirm they might have had a three year old daughter named Lillian.

Frankie Janda, the two year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Janda of near Nelson, Nebraska, died the fore part of this week. The body was brought here for burial, the funeral being held Thursday afternoon. We extend our sympathy to the parents.
Frank Janda was born in the village of Voleneca, Bohemia, in the year 1974 and died at the home of his father-in-law, Steve HLINA, in Madison precinct, Fillmore county, Nebraska, May 31, 1913.
He came to America with his parents in 1879. While living near Alliance, Neb., his father and sister were killed by lightning. He returned to Fillmore county, where he lived several years, going then to Canada. After staying there for four years, he again returned to Nebraska.
May 22, 1907, he was married to Mary Hlina. To them were born two children, one dying at the age of 2 years, 2 months and 19 days. In March 1912, Mr. Janda moved his family to Nelson, Neb., where he had bought a farm. He had been ailing since the first of the year and in April went to Lincoln to consult a specialist. May 1 he was operated on for appendicitis but it was found that cancer of the stomach was his real ailment. May 19 he was brought to the home of his father-in-law, where everything was done to relieve his suffering.
There are left to mourn his death his wife and little son, five brothers, five sisters, a stepmother and a host of friends.
Card of Thanks

Joseph was a tailor. After his first wife (Josefa Rejsek) died, Joseph decided to move to Western Nebraska where much cheap land was available. He and his 15 year old daughter Mary moved to Box Butte County, near, Lawn and set up a homestead. Leaving Mary and a hired hand to hold down the claim, he returned to Fillmore County to sell his holdings there and move the rest of his family. Joseph, Mary and Frank plowed to new prarie land and planted flax, corn and wheat. The new area was difficult for farming, however, and was eventually seized by the bank. Joseph moved to Wyoming and hauled timber ties, eventually saving enough money to resume farming. After he and daughter Antonie were killed by lightning in an electrical storm, however, this children from his first marriage decided to return to Fillmore County. Joseph's second wife, Rousy, married a homesteader in the area, and they also returned to Fillmore County (Milligan, p 314).
From the HEMINGFORD GUIDE, August 17, 1894, courtesy of Sharon Nemeth
"A severe electric storm passed over the western part of the county yesterday afternoon, during which lightning struck the house of Joseph Janda, on 21-27-52, eighteen miles west of Hemingford, killing Mr. Janda and his thirteen year old daughter outright. Mr. Janda was a hard-working, honest and prosperous Bohemian farmer, and a leader among his people. THE GUIDE extends Mrs. Janda and her remaining children heartfelt sympathies."

Sharon Nemeth emailed that in March 1913, the University of Nebraska hosted it Third Annual high school basketball tournament and the Geneva High School team won the state championship. In the Thursday, March 20, 1913 issue of the Nebraska Signal a four page article was written about the tournament. Vincent Janda was named to the First all-state Team. It was reported that "Janda, the final selection for the first team, was the star of the tournament. No player compared with him in shooting goals. He was a demon on defense and on offense he could not be checked. His ability to break through three or four men because of his great strength was only surpassed by his ability to shoot baskets. From any point he found the rings nearly every time and, although a guard, piled up a record of scores surpassed by few forwards."
Sharon also noted that Vincent Janda and May Paine were married 05 Jun 1920. Her father officiated, although they were married at her home, not at the church he served. Her father was the minister at Bethany Christian Church.
Dennis Belohlavy notes that Viola married first Joseph PERLMAN, and they were the parents of Jacque, Jean, and Jerry. She married second Carl LACKEY. She was a widow, however, at the time of her death.
THE STRIFFLER-BENKELMAN BROADCAST, Volume 16, September 7, 1953, reported that "Higgins Lake was the meeting place this Summer of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Kendall (Dorothy Striffler), Karen and Bill; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Seeley (Charlotte Striffler), Lynn and Fred; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Funston (Marjorie Striffler) and Sherrill; and Mrs. Fred. Striffler."
She and her parents, Joseph and Barbara Eret Janousek, emigrated in 1882, settling first in Saline County. About six years later, her parents purchased a farm in Glengary Township.
The son of Jan Janovec (6 Jul 1850-30 Jan 1901) and his wife, Marie (2 May 1854-10 Jun 1914). Both are also buried in the Czech National (Killian) Cemetery in Saunders County, Nebraska.
Emily Stowell writes, in her historical novel AMERICAN NOMADS, that Adrian Jans "came to Draedvadt in 1657 (when the) Indian troubles had just hotted up...Governor Stuyvesant sent (Adrian) to help move the scattered settlers' houses into the village and help put up the palisades. He was a house carpenter...(during the warfare with the Esopus tribe, the tribe) ambushed the soldiers and settlers down by the ball court near the Strand, collected the ransom for their prisoners, then tortured and killed seven of them....Adrien was one of the sorry seven. Burned alive like the rest..." (Stowell, p 78).

Harriet Estella (Jansky) Synovec was born on September 9.1028, on a farm near Tobias, Nebraska and passed away on November 19, 2016, at the Wilber Care Center at the age of 88 years 2 months and 10 days.
Harriet, one of five children, attended school in Tobias through the 12th grade graduating in 1945. While attending high school she received her teaching accreditation. The family moved to a farm 5 miles east of Milligan, and at that time she taught at Opossum Hill School, many days walking 1 ? miles to and from school. She worked for 2 years saving money to purchase a kitchen table and dresser for her new home with Milton.
Harriet married Milton Synovec on June 9, 1948 in Wilber, Nebraska. They made their home on a farm 8 miles east of Milligan, Nebraska where they farmed and raised their four children, Gene, Carol, Cindy and Gale. Together her and Milton ran a repair shop with Harriet being the bookkeeper for the business. Harriet was a housewife and mother and was willing to help wherever needed.
Harriet loved working with her flowers, gardening, canning and freezing all the produce to be used to feed the family, and as they grew it came in very handy when they would pop in for a visit. She loved her family and after the arrival of 9 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren time was spent with them learning to bake cookies and breads for them all to take home. She enjoyed spending time reading to the grandkids curled up on her lap. She also raised chickens and ducks and the grandkids would help gather the eggs and was affectionately known to all "Grandma Chicken." One of Harriet's special hobbies was making denim quilts out of Grandpas old overalls, which was presented to each grandchild and they are still enjoying them today.
Harriet and Milton continued to live on the farm until Milton's health failed and was moved to the Friend Nursing Home, passing away in 2009. Harriet made the decision to go to the Wilber Care Center in July of 2014. There she made many friends with the residents and staff and enjoyed visiting doing word search and watching television. Harriet was a very caring person and even in her final days would ask about the well being of the family.
Harriet is survived by her children; Gene and wife Dorothy Synovec of Western, Carol and husband Dr. Bruce Kennedy of Crete, Cindy and husband Gary Kastanek, of Tobias, Gale and husband Curtis Zach of Wilber; Grandchildren Stacey and husband Cory Nickel, Heather and husband Tim Sejkora, Gwen Thompson, Jennifer and husband Jeff Meinke, Jon and wife Shannon Kennedy, Amanda and husband Jason Dean, Jim Synovec, Josh Zach, and Jessie Zach and 18 Great Grandchildren. Sister, Marian and husband Walt Umphlett of Santa Maria, California, brother Larry and wife Diane Jansky of Milligan. Sisters-in-law Shirley and husband Richard Brunkow of Milligan and Mary Jansky of Milligan.
She was preceded in death by her parents William and Mamie Jansky, husband Milton Synovec, brothers Leslie and Lumir Jansky. Parents-in-law JC and Rose Synovec and sisters-in-law Irene Synovec and Mary Jansky.
