Leona Elizabeth Klawitter was born to Otto John & Lena Marie (Schwisow) Bartels on June 5, 1928 at the family farm near Tobias, Nebraska. She passed away on February 13, 2023 at Heritage Crossings Nursing Home in Geneva, Nebraska at the age of 94 years, 8 months and 8 days. She was one of 7 children born in the family.
Leona lived the majority of her life in Tobias. She was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church on June 24, 1928 and confirmed on May 3, 1942. She attended Zion Lutheran grade school and graduated from Tobias High School in 1946. After high school, she taught school for a few years. She was married to Martin G. Klawitter on October 2, 1949 and two children were born to this union: Beverly Jean and Brenda Joyce. Leona was never afraid of hard work. At a young age, she had to help care for her younger siblings and this led to a strong work ethic. Leona and Martin both started out working at the Tobias school, Leona as a school cook and Martin as the school janitor. After the girls were out of school, Leona began working at the Girl's Training School. During this time, Martin tragically passed away in a grain elevator accident in Milligan on November 26, 1973. As life moved forward, Leona took employment with the United States Post Office as a clerk in Tobias and occasionally working in Lincoln at the Post Office. After nearly 40 years of public service, Leona retired from the Post Office. She then began volunteering her time for the Tobias Grocery Store Coop and also tending to the Boulevard flowers as you enter into Tobias.
Leona's church family was very important to her and she remained a member of Zion Lutheran Church her entire life. She was active in the Church Choir, Ladies Aid and Bible Study groups. She also was active in the Tobias community serving on the Tobias Town Board and Library Board. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and embroidery, even constructing Brenda's wedding dress as well as Bev & Brenda's attendant's dresses. She also enjoyed birds, especially cardinals, playing the card game 'Rook,' her Tobias Birthday Coffee Group, Husker Football and Kansas City Royal's and St. Louis Cardinal's Baseball. With all the activities Leona found to occupy her time, her priority was her family, specifically her grandkids. She loved to attend all activities of the grandkids, especially their sporting activities, keeping track of points and fouls during the contests. More so points for Bryce, Gina & Travis, and fouls for Brent! She also enjoyed following Brent in his auto races. It made her nervous to watch, but when she did, she would grip onto Brenda's leg while Brent was on the track!
Leona was the matriarch of the family and had to persevere through the loss of her husband at a young age, but she made the most of it. She moved to the Sunshine Villa Apartments in Milligan in 2014 to be closer to her daughters. In 2021, she moved to Heritage Crossings where she remained until her death.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband Martin; parents Otto & Lena Bartels; brothers & sisters-in-law Vernon & Letha Bartels, Gaylord Bartels, Willard Bartels, Everett & Iona Bartels; brothers-in-law Wilmer Brandt and Lester Steinbrook; son-in-law Ralph Kassik; and nephews Jerry Brandt and Lowell Bartels.
She is survived by her daughters Beverly & Daniel Kotas and Brenda Kassik all of Milligan, Nebraska; grandchildren Bryce & Molly Kassik of Geneva, Nebraska, Gina & Michael Krambeck of Omaha, Nebraska, Brent Kassik of Geneva, Nebraska, Travis Kotas of Milligan, Nebraska; great grandchildren Cooper & Lennyn Kassik of Geneva, Nebraska; sisters Dorothy Brandt of Western, Nebraska, Donna Steinbrook of Tobias, Nebraska; sisters-in-law Pat Bartels of Fairbury, Nebraska, Judy Bartels of Tobias, Nebraska; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Lowell Dean Bartels was born in Fairbury, Nebraska on April 18, 1959 to Gaylord & Patricia (Hamouz) Bartels. He passed away peacefully at Bryan Medical Center, in Lincoln, Nebraska on Thursday, January 6th, 2022 at the age of 62 years, 8 months, and 19 days. After High School, Lowell attended Southeast Community College in Milford, NE in the Building Construction Program. Lowell stayed dedicated to his trade and worked many years in building construction and carpentry, while building many friendships with coworkers and customers along the way. His dedication to his trade, great work ethic and willingness to teach are the characteristics that best describe Lowell.
Anyone who knew Lowell knows he sure enjoyed a good laugh with friends and coworkers. Always willing to teach those around him, especially when it came to the carpentry trade and gardening. He had a heart for animals, especially his dogs at the farm. He also had a love and skill for gardening, where he spent many evenings during the summer canning vegetables and tending to his garden.
Although his animals and gardening had a special place in his heart, nothing could come close to the love he had for his three children and eight grandchildren. Whenever he had the chance to see them or hear about them, the emotions would pour out in laughter and were usually followed by tears of joy.

Wynema McGrews writes that he was the son of Jane Hall and Joshua Barton. She cites also a letter he wrote his parents on 24 Feb 1842, "....I am Married. I Married Widow McGrews Daughter of the County we were married on the 27th of January I wrote to you but a short time before and since informing you of my intentions but for fear that you should not receive them I will say something about them I expect to make my home in Texas...."
Several authors reported that David A. Barton was killed with George Washington McGrew in an series of Indian attacks during a battle on the east side of the Brazos, near Fort Marlin in Texas. Wynema reports, however, that is was actually David's brother, Hale Barton, who was killed in 1839 with George Washington McGrew.
On 7 Jan 1845, Samantha's attorney filed a petition for the Robertson County Probate Court to be named administratix of her late husband's estate. Her petition was granted. On 5 May 1845, Samuel B. Killough petitioned the same court to grant him Letters of Administration since the estate was wholly without legal representation. The probate judge appointed Samuel Killough, J.A. Well, John F. McGrew (Samantha's brother), and Thomas Webb as "safe hands" of the estate, which was to be eventually passed to the sole heir of the estate, Elizabeth Jane Barton.
Wynema McGrew states that a first cousin of Elizabeth's reported she was returned to Tennessee to be raised by her paternal grandparents. However, if this is true, it was not for long. On 5 May 1845, Elizabeth McGrew, her maternal grandmother, applied to the Robertson County Probate Court for guardianship of Elizabeth Jane Barton, minor, heir of David A. Barton and Samatha Barton, both deceased. Elizabeth was granted this guardianship, and she was living with her grandmother as of 1850.
Wynema indicated that Elizabeth Jane married Cleve R. Walters or Waters in Limestone County, Texas prior to 1860 where they can be found on that census. He was a farmer with real and personal property of $3,500 each. They were not found on the 1870 or 1880 censuses of Texas.
An Anton Bartu of Friend, Nebraska, was a member of the Denton Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) 2738th Company of 1937.
The CCC was a program to recruit thousands of young men into a peacetime army to work in forests, parks, and waters. The young men needed to be between the ages of 18 and 25, be physically fit, unemployed, and unmarried. In 1935 the age limits were reduced to 17 and increased to 28 years. The men were paid $1 a day. The enrollees were required to send $25.00 of the $30.00 monthly wages home. The men were given the $5 to spend as they wished. The CCC program had an immediate economic impact. This money helped greatly the towns across the nation. The enrollee felt that he was working to help his family, many of whom were in dire need. Many families were kept from the relief rolls with the monthly checks.
Frank was 24 when he came to America. He homesteaded the S 1/2 NW 1/4 of Section 12 in Glengary Township of Fillmore County, claiming the land at the Beatrice Land Office on April 10, 1878. His brother, Peter, homesteaded the N 1/2 of this quarter on the same day. Frank received the patent to his 80 acres on July 10, 1883. He sold this 80 acres to his brother on June 28, 1890. Frank Bartu became a naturalized citizen of the United States on November 22, 1880 in Fillmore County. He later purchased school land from the state of Nebraska a the W 1/2 SE 1/4 and the E 1/2 SW 1/4. The land was sold to his son-in-law, Vaclav Urban, and almost immediately transferred back to Vaclav's mother-in-law, Katherine Bartu. When the Bartu's lived on this farm, they had Catholic Church services on Sundays there (Milligan, pp 189-190).
As of the 1910 census, the widowed Frank Bartu was living with his son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Fannie Bartu, in Saline County.

He was born October 4, 1925 in Hemphill, Texas to Bertis Bass and Sally Erwin Bass and lived in Sabine County most all of his life where he attended Hemphill schools.
During World War II, Norman was not drafted due to a childhood accident that left his right foot compromised. After three call ups and all of his friends and relatives being drafted, he decided he could serve the war effort by building war ships at Consolidated Shipyard in Orange, Texas. That is where he met his first wife, the love of his life for 58 years, Daphne Johnson. They moved back to Hemphill in 1947 and started N. P. Bass Logging Co. which they operated for 53 years.
During these years he became a member of Littleton Fowler Masonic Lodge #305 and the Order of the Eastern Star Hemphill Chapter #375 where he served as Worthy Patron for 2 years. He was a member of the Texas Logging Council and the Texas Forestry Association.
One year, he decided to leave logging and worked for LeTourneau Industries in Longview. He had logging in his blood and soon returned to what he loved.
He loved to travel and over the years visited almost all 50 states. He also loved raising cattle and helping his grandson with the hay crop. His family was the center of his world and he loved family parties and get togethers, especially with the grands and great grands.
He is survived by his loving second wife of 12 years, Billie Sue Chambers Bass; daughter, Vickey Procella; grandson, Eric Procella and wife, Lana; granddaughter, Andrea Procella Heslip and husband, Eric; and great grandchildren, Bret and Carlee Procella and Wyatt and Evie Heslip.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Daphne; sisters, Thelma Henderson and Margaret Bass; and son-in-law, Joe Procella.

Middle name shown as both Crockett and Canady by various sources. Pam Seidl, a descendant writes that the WWI draft registration records of Erath County show his middle name as Canada. His Texs Death Certificate, viewable online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976, showed him instead as David Crockett Batey. The informant was his son, Everett Batey.
Lisa Lach notes that he died in the Battle of Milliken's Bend during the Civil War. This took place on June 7, 1863 in Madison Parish, Louisiana. She does not cite a specific source for this information, however.
According to Melba Gene McLemore, brothers Jack and Az Batey were both killed in a shoot out in McDade Texas on Christmas Day, 1883, following the hangings of Thad and Wright McLemore, who were brothers-in-law of their sister, Clarissa Batey McLemore . Robert Stephens and Haywood Batey were also involved in the shoot out, but not killed. A niece, Pearl Lee Batey was to be born this same day, to Walter and Elizabeth Batey.

Involved in the Christmas Day, 1883 shootout in McDade, Texas. Two of his brothers, Jack and Az Beatey were both killed, with Heywood and his brother-in-law, Robert Stephens, surviving.
His Texas Death certificate, viewable online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976, showed him as a retired farmer, and the son of Walter Beaty and Elizabeth Gober. His last name was spelled as BEATY as well. He was listed as single, and the informant was Mrs. Pearl Baxter of 411 S. Henderson in Forth Worth. It was indicated that his address for the last 11 years had been 921 W. Connon, Ft. Worth, Parker County, Texas.
Melba McLemore, a descendant, notes that the spelling BATEY was used in the family Bible. Jerald Hemphill and other researchers instead use the alternative spelling of BEATY. Jerald Hemphill also has Walter's date of birth as 23 Dec 1819 and date of death as Aug 1884.

According to Merritt Mullen, her maiden name is variously shown as Batiste, Baptiste, Battiece. ...
Merritt writes that Nancy (Vinnie) Batiste is believed to be a Choctaw Indian, probably born in the territory of Mississippi (census records indicate she was born in South Carolina, but there are no Batiste families there). A tradition in different branches of the Fairchild family says her grandchildren are 1/4 Indian, and the early Choctaw Indian rolls for Mississippi show Indian families using the surname of "Batiste" (with various spellings such as Battist, Battiese, Battice, Bapten). The name is also found among the Choctaws who migrated to Oklahoma Indian Territory.
"Batiste" is a variant spelling of the French name "Baptiste" (as in the common name "Jean Baptiste", or John the Baptist). The Baptistes were prominent early settlers of the Gulf Coast around what is now Mobile, Alabama. Jean Baptiste (dit Graveline) Baudreau came from Montreal (Canada) to the Gulf Coast with the brothers d'Iberville and Bienville, sent by King Louis XV to build Fort Louis and explore the Gulf Coast to protect the huge holdings (Louisiana Purchase area). It was in 1699/1700 that Jean Baptiste Baudreau came to the Pascaqoula/Bay St. Louis area on the Gulf Coast.
The family history of the descendants of Jean Baptiste Beaudreau indicates it was common for the male descendants to have both a French and an Indian wife, and children with both of them. A grandson of the first settler, Jean Batiste Baudreau, Pierre Baptiste (also called Pedro, during the Spanish era on the Gulf Coast) was probably 1/4 Indian and 3/4 French. He married a Choctaw Indian and had a daughter by her named Michou Jenny (or Jincy) Batiste (or Battiest), who married Daniel Anderson. It is possible that a brother of Jenny was the father of Nancy Vinnie Baptiste. If Nancy's mother was a full-blood Choctaw, then Nancy would be 3/16 French and 13/16 Indian.
Nancy was living in Copiah County, Mississippi with her son, John, at the time of the 1860 Census.
Larry Kingsley & Merritt Mullen both note that she died in Scott County, Mississippi.
