In July, 2009, Melanie Powers (mpmusic30646@yahoo.com) emailed that this was her great-great grandmother.
She was listed with her family in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Madison County, Georgia. She married Kinchen Milton Strickland on March 9, 1862 in Danielsville, Georgia. She took the Loyalty Oath in about 1866, listed as Letty Strickland, age 21. Her children with Kinchen Milton Strickland are: Paralie (1866), Lavonia (1867-1934), LaFayette (1870-?) Obe (Otho?) (1873-1994), Clorinda (1876-1953), Charles (1878), Tyke (1880-1930), T.V (1882-1936), and Dugar (1884-1939).
Letty Ann was the daughter of Alphaeus Herring and his wife, Mariah Landers (per Madison County census and Marriage Book). According to the census, Alphaeus worked as a miller. After the war, he lived in Jackson County and worked at the C & J Mill. By 1880 he is in the Madison County Census listed as
Alphaeus was the son of Jonathan Herring and his wife Adelisa/Ardelisa. Letty's grandfather, Jonathan Herring, was born ca. 1777. A Jonathan Heron was listed as paying taxes in Clarke County in 1805. Jonathan paid taxes in Madison County beginning in 1817. He first appeared in the Madison County Census in 1820. At that time he had 2 sons under 10, two daughters 10-16, and he and his wife were listed as between 26-44.
In the 1830 census is Jonathan with only one son at home: 15-20. Jonathan and wife were listed as between 50-60.
In 1840, we find Alpheus Herring, aged between 20-30. His wife is listed as 30-40, and they have 2 sons under 5, 1 son 5-10, and one female in the house who could be her daughter from her previous marriage: 10-15.
In the 1850 census, we have the following families:
1. Ardelisa, 62 and Jonathan, 73.
2. Alpheus, 39, Mariah, 50, Elijah, 16, Henry, 14, Newton, 9,
Benjamin, 8, and Letty, 6.
3. Jonathan, 32, Martha, 34, Sarah, 12, Amasa 9, Elisha, 8,
John, 7, Tabitha 5, George 3, Mary 3, James 1
In the 1860 census, we find:
1. Alpheus, 50, Mariah, 60, Letty, 14?, Benjamin F. 78 (18?)
2. Elijah J. 26, Mary A. 24, Henry 2, John 3, Milton 4 ms.
3. Martha J., 23, Henry, 23
4. Mary 18, Newton, 20
5. (listed as Hearings) Patsy, 46, Sarah J. 21, Amaia? (Amasa) 20, John R., 17, Tabitha, 16, George W., 13,
James M. 11, (Jonathan, husband, died in May 1860
of consumption after being ill for 1 yr.)
Melba Gene McLemore had two seperate daughters, with similar names and birthdates, listed: Bertha Bates Herrington, born 29 Jan 1884 and Bertha Bea Herrington, born 27 Sept 1884. This would leave only nine months between their births.
The 1900 Erath County has only one daughter around this age and with a similar name, "Bertie B. Herrington Dtr W F Sept 1883 16 S Tx Miss Tx." As the census further notes that Perlina was the mother of 7 total children, all still living, it appears that there was only one Bertha/Bertie B. Herrington.
Based on the above census information, it is assumed that the September month of birth shown by Melba is more likely to be accurate than the January birth month.
She was said to have married Robert N. GILLEY on 6 Jun 1909 in Erath County, and be the mother of Ruth GILLEY. Beth Herrington has her as the mother of eight children in total.
Her dates of death vary as well (shown as 12 Mar 1952, 25 Sept 1957 and 27 Sept 1957). She is said to be buried in Sunger Cemetery, Denton County, Texas.
Charles E. Herrington, 71, of Pineland died on June 6, 2007 in Hospice in the Pines In-Patient Unit.
He was born April 12, 1936 to Charles A. Herrington and Lola Smith. He had lived in Pineland his entire life and was a repairman with Contel Communications Telephone Co.
Survivors: wife, Bobbie Herrington of Pineland; sons, Ronald Wayne Herrington and wife, Carla of Lufkin, James Robert Herrington of Pineland, and Samuel Ray Herrington of Pineland; daughter, Linda Dale and hsuband, Randy of Alexandria, LA; sister, Shirley Medley of Bridge City; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 9, at Starr Funeral Home Chapel in Hemphill, with Rev. Michael Wright officiating. Interment followed in Pineland Cemetery.

Melba Howell Colwell, a granddaughter, said that her grandmother was a remarkable woman. After her husband died young, leaving her widowed with four small children, she worked to support her family. She had attended college and was an educated and articulate woman, becoming postmaster in Carlton, Texas.
She was very independent and active throughout her life, walking six blocks to and from the grocery store to do her weekly shopping well into her 90's. Her doctor eventually insisted she take a cab.

Date of birth shown by Ray Coldeway as 15 Jun 1887 instead of in 1889. Census records indidate that 1889 is more likely.
Ray also shows a third child, daughter Desma Loreda, born 12 Feb 1911 in Hamilton County, Texas. She is not listed with the family on the 1930 census...presumably either married or died by 1930.

(1836): William Herrington, 6 slaves, NO white poll Tax List
(1840): Desoto County, MS W Harrington, 6 slaves, NO white polls, J.N. or I.N. Harrington listed beside him, 1 white poll. Is this a mistake? Could this be his grandson Isaac N Stephens? Could Isaac be living with William and the person preparing the list just have wrote Herrington? No other sign of a J.N Herrington.
William is not listed as a head of household in the 1840 census, neither is Cleva.
Tax list in order William Jones no slaves Thomas Jones no slaves William Herrington 6 slaves J. (or I) N. Herrington no slaves.
Thomas Jones was witness to the indenture the slave Catherine by Cleva and Polly. He was also the father of Cleva's wife, Rachael. Is the I.N or J.N. Herrington actually I.N. Stephens, William's grandson and living with William?
The 1840 census lists Stephen Herrington (10 kids) he and wife are 60-70 years old. NO Slaves Wm Jones Jr No slaves Wm Jones No slaves
Tax are in alpha order after that but the 1845 census is not and I just now figured out something. I found the marriage record yesterday of Stephen Herrington's daughter Nepsy to Isaac N Stephens in Marshall County in 1837 (I may have known that before but I never researched her).
Isaac and Nepsy are now living where Stephen did live. Stephen and his sons are now living by the Cummings and Shultz families, to which his other kids married into.
listed in order C(leva) Herrington 1 male over 21, one female, 1 male under 21..... now is this William and Polly? or was Cleva married before Rachael? He does have an older child in his household in 1850, I think age 7. Cleva was listed as 26 years old in 1850.... John Stephens 1 male over 21, 1 female David Hoke... John Stephens married his daughter Emily. Emily and children lived with the Hokes in 1860. Then 6 households in between them and Jesse Stephens 2 males over 21, 3 females, 1 male under 21 (Asa C) Wm Jones Rachael Jones (widow of Thomas - mother of Rachael who marries Cleva) I.N. Stephens 1 male over 21, 2 females, 2 males under 21.
Tax List (1841): Desoto County, MS 160 acres, 7 slaves, NO white polls (this will be Cleva's land, William has NO deeds in Desoto County. Cleva had 160 acre land grant Tax List
(1842): Desoto County, MS 1 clock, 21 cattle, 8 slaves, NO white poll Tax List
(1843): Desoto County, MS 1 clock, 8 slaves, NO white polls
Will (July 1845): Desoto County, MS Williams will names his wife Polly, son Cleva, daughter Jemima Stephens, and "other children not named in this will". He left Jemima 1 slave, Juda, he left all his other kids "not named" one slave, Catherine to be sold and divided amongst them, as he has already given them their share. He leaves Polly everything else, for life, then all to go to Cleva. There is a codicil, it says instead of Catherine being sold, the other children "not named" are to receive $100 each and Cleva and Mary to have Catherine. He had 12 slaves when he died according to his inventory.
The entry before the wills, states William died intestate. Jesse Stephens and "others" "heirs and next of kin" to William Herrington contested the will, Jesse Stephens was a witness to the will and testified in court that he witnessed it but also contradicts some of it. Owen Griffin the other witness (from Fayette County, TN), testified, at the hearing. The court found the will valid and charged Jesse and others over $100 but I never find where Cleva settled with the other heirs. In March 1848, he told the court that he owed no accounting because his father named him his only heir in his will... the court agreed and discharged him from further liability . Cleva and Mary had sold Catherine, (with the stipulation that they could pay the debt within a certain timeframe and get her back). I've went through the film page by page and have found nothing showing he gave Juda to Jemima or where he paid the other heirs $100 each.
I wonder if somewhere there are powers of attorney to Jesse Stephen's from the other children?
William only lists 8 slaves on tax lists and there were 12 on his inventory. Cleva is listed as Charles Herrington in the 1845 tax list. He has 12 slaves. In the 1850 slave schedule, Cleva has 12 slaves. That puzzled me until I paid attention to the tax lists, they were taxed on slaves age 5-60. So, William's tax lists don't reflect the true amount of slaves owned.
Probate (18 May 1846): Desoto County, MS The inventory of William's estate included 25 cattle, 10 hogs, 20 sheep, 1 wagon, 2 yokes, 4 horses, 8 honey beehives, and 12 slaves. It wasn't a long inventory and no house or land were mentioned but some furnishings. Cleva had a land patent in 1840 (Jesse Stephens had adjoining land), I would think William had this patent put in Cleva's name and they lived there.

OBITUARY
MARSHALL-In this city after a short illness, on the 25th inst., Mrs. Hannah S. Marshall, wife of Samuel Marshall, aged 77 years 5 months and 18 days.
"And I heard a voice from Heaven saying unto me, write, 'Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth." Yea, saith the Lord, Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors."
Hannah S. Hicks was born in Campbell county, VA., December 7th, 1797. Was married to Samuel Marshall, March 26th, 1817; moved to Breckenridge county, Ky., in 1821; joined the Methodist Church in 1822; came to Lewis county, Mo., in 1835, and died April 25th, 1875, having lived with her now bereaved husband more than 58 years, and she was a member of the Methodist Church 53 years.
Such is the brief history of an eventful life of love and piety. She was loved by her neighbors. Her children grew up to call her blessed; h husband, also; and he praiseth her. Of course she dies well, leaving the blessed evidence behind that God was with her.
"What fullness of rapture is there,
While Jesus His glory displays?
And purples the heavenly air,
And scatters the odors of grace."
May God bind up the wounded hearts that are left behind, for our mother '"Sleeps in Jesus' blessed sleep, From which none ever wake to weep." BY J. J. POAGE.

The clan of Ulrike (German for Mistress of All) is not among the original "Seven Daughters of Eve" clans, but with just under 2% of Europeans among its members, it has a claim to being included among the numerically important clans. Ulrike lived about 18,000 years ago in the cold refuges of the Ukraine at the northern limits of human habitation. Though Ulrike's descendants are nowhere common, the clan is found today mainly in the east and north of Europe with particularly high concentrations in Scandinavia and the Baltic states.
