Loading... Marshall, Silas and wife Mary Langhorne Silas Marshall was a merchant in Missouri, later moving to Little Rock, Arkansas as an Insurance Agent. This cabinet portrait, marked "T. W. Bankes' Gallery of Photographic Art, Little Rock" was probably taken shortly after the Civil War. It was inscribed on the back, "Compliments of Mr. and Mrs. S.N. Marshall to Miss Lizzie Payne." Lizzie was the eldest daughter of Silas's sister Martha Jane Marshall. The photographer, Thomas Bankes was a native of England who was well known for his Civil War photos, following the Federal Army from Helena, Ark. to Little Rock, Ark. in 1864. He serviced the central Arkansas area until the 1870's.
