Notes |
- In "Newton County Nuggets" (Nortex Press, Austin, Texas, 1986, p 375), Ruby Sutton Droptini writes about helping her widowed mother run the local telephone operator office in rural Burkeville in the late 1930's and early 1940's. She recalled the day that their "neighbors' house caught fire. It was the house of Mr. and Mrs. Ben F. BEAN. It happened on a beautiful day about the middle of the morning. There was no fire department in Burkeville." The Beans operated a store in Wiergate, and were not home to take action themselves. Ruby therefore "rang all the business places in town at one time and as they answered I told them, "Beans house is on fire!""
Everyone responded and in a few minutes the yard was full of people. They drew water from the Bean's well and from the wards well to put on the house. The fire was extinguished before it could cause much damage, and the Beans were grateful their house had been saved.
