- Jo Peck writes that Joe was tall and spare, with blond hair and blue eyes. He left the family farm in 1887 to work as a foreman for a dairy farm in Pipestone, Minnesota. He returned home when his father became ill and could no longer farm. He was semi-retired over half his life, and was a well-known figure driving his Model T around Grant County.
