Services for Joe S. McIlhaney, 97, of Lubbock will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ford Memorial Chapel of First Baptist Church with the Rev. John H. Ballard officiating.
Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.
He died on Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, in the SouthHaven Residential Care Home.
He was born on Oct. 18, 1902, in Gholson. He moved to Lubbock in 1925. He married Io Halbert in 1934. He established McIlhaney Creamery in 1925 for production and sale of butter. Sales offices were located in Lubbock, Beaumont, San Antonio and El Paso. He ultimately shipped butter as far as the West Coast and Chicago.
With the advent of oleo margarine, butter sales declined at which time he established McIlhaney Dairy Products Company. He then manufactured and distributed multiple dairy products. Retail delivery was accomplished by horse- drawn milk wagons in the Lubbock area. His company was the last to discontinue this colorful practice.
He sold his business in 1950. He made donations of equipment to Texas Tech and supported the Scottish Rite Children's Hospital and the Texas Boy's Ranch. He was a life member of the Masonic Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite, Texas Tech Dad's Club and the First Baptist Church where he served as deacon.
A daughter, JoAnne McIlhaney Conely, preceded him in death in 1992.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy McIlhaney Rainwater of Honey Grove; three sons, Joe S. McIlhaney Jr. of Austin, Richard G. McIlhaney of Copper Canyon and David L. McIlhaney of Ventura, Calif.; a sister, Louise Deering of Lubbock; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
