Notes |
- Lynell Cordell's brother, Harold, started to school at Payne School. His teacher was Gladys Payne, wife of Dukey Payne. Their children were Virginia and Tommy. Gladys also had a brother, Bill Powell, who taught school both in Payne and Arthur, therefore it is assumed her maiden name was POWELL.
Gladys was said to be related to Lily Rowe, wife of Emory Howard Gentry; however, the connection, if any, would appear to be remote.
Dukey died in 1953, with Gladys surviving until 1995. She was said to have remarried after his death. She and Dukey, however, are buried side by side with a double tombstone. Above her name, DIEFENBAKER is also engraved. This was her name at the time of her death, as noted on the SSDI entry below, and was the surname of her second husband, Roy Diefenbaker. Lyn Cordell recalls that Roy worked in a western clothing store here in town and wore what he sold, so he was the best dressed cowboy around!

Gladys Payne Diefenbaker
Roswell, N.M. -- Gladys Payne Diefenbaker, 88, of Artesia, N.M., died Thursday, Jan. 19, 1995, in Roswell.
Mrs. Diefenbaker was the daughter of William and Minnie Powell and was born in Stephens County near Duncan on March 22, 1906.
She was a graduate of Tuttle High School and received her bachelor's degree from Central State College in Edmond. She taught school for several years in Oklahoma before marrying John Earl Payne on Oct. 13, 1931, in Chickasha.
After the death of her first husband she married Ray Diefenbaker in Santa Fe, N.M., on June 4, 1960. He died Dec. 1, 1990.
Mrs. Diefenbaker taught school in Oklahoma and New Mexico for over 40 years. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Diefenbaker is survived by a daughter, Virginia Strain Oller, of Artesia, a sister, Minnie Mae Powell, of Artesia; four grandchildren, Jenny Lynn Heffington and Rick Strain, both of Duncan, and T. J. and Johnny Payne, both of Ohio; and seven great-grandchildren.
- (Research):This MIGHT be Gladys with her family at the time of the 1910 and 1920 census. It is noted that she did have an older brother, Wilmer, who might be the Bill Powell she taught with at Arthur School. More research should be done to verify that this is the same Gladys Powell.

| Gentry, Harold 1943 letter from his teacher, Gladys Payne,
Arthur School, Stephens County, Oklahoma Harold Gentry's Eighth Grade teacher at the Arthur School was Gladys (Powell) Payne, the wife of John Earl "Dukey" Payne. This is a letter she wrote to Harold on the occasion of his Eighth Grade Graduation in 1943. Lyn Cordell reports that Gladys was pretty and well liked, but appears to have been using her "stern teacher look" in this photo. The Payne's and Gentry's of Stephens County were related by marriage. |
