Notes |
- Charles Strong located what appears to be an account of the sale of a portion of the property of George Pain dec'd, as settled with Nicholas Grimes, the administrator for George Payne. This was in Bourbon County records, Book D, page 16. This particular document showed the collection of 120 British pounds, 4 shillings, and 4 d. for the hire of Negros. Interest on the above was some 28 pounds. Of the amount collected, it appears that Nicholas Grimes was paid 52 pounds, 16 shillings and William CLARKSON, Samuel SCOTT, and George THOMAS were due 96 pounds, 4 shillings. This was dated September, 1809.
He moved to Bourbon county in about 1806, where his home was known as "Loudoun Hall." His wife's descendants write that his step-children remembered him in Kentucky as a slave-owner and a cripple, unable to walk. (Payne, p 261).
Charles Strong located his will in the Bourbon County, Kentucky Will Book J, p 27. He apparently had been married prior to his marriage in 1803 to Mary Payne (nee Coe). His will names a daughter, Fanny Wilson, her son, Nicholas Wilson (a minor). He also names his three sons as John Grimes, Washington Grimes, and George Grimes. The will was dated October 7, 1831 and witnesses were Peter CLARKSON, John BUCHANAN, and Jno. BROOKS.
