  Notes	From FindAGrave: He was born in Louisiana, the son of William Theodore and Louiza Dexter West Collier. He married Gladys Mavor Winn on July 29, 1919. He served as a naval fireman in World War I on the patrol boat Alcedo, the first American vessel sunk during the war. He was on watch in the engine room under instructions as machinist mate. When the Alcedo, patroling off the coast of France, was torpedoed by a German submarine, he stopped the main engine and then raised the safety valve on the main engine by the hand gear, despite the fact that he was, by that time, standing in knee-deep water. The ship sank four minutes after being struck and George ended up in the water for 18 hours before he was rescued.
