Mrs. Samuel Jaus
Funeral services for Mrs. Samuel Jaus were held at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the Evangelical church. Rev. C.F. SMITH officiated and burial was in Elkland cemetery. Lena Katie HELWIG was born May 1, 1879, at Lancaster, New York, and came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George HELWIG, to Cass City when two years of age. They settled on a farm 2 1/2 miles east of town. She was married to Samuel JAUS March 12, 1902, and they have since made their home on a farm 3 miles north and 1 1/2 miles east of town. Mrs. JAUS has been poorly for some time and has been confined to her bed the last six weeks. She was taken to the Morris hospital Wednesday of last week, and passed away Saturday afternoon, May 9.
Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Minnie Edith, at home. A son, George Alvin, died February 12, 1921. She also leaves three brothers and six sisters, Mrs. Grant McCONNELL, Mrs. George BARTLE, Samuel HELWIG and Mrs. Harve KLINKMAN, all of Cass City, Miss Minnie HELWIG of Lancaster, New York, Edward HELWIG of Bad Axe, Mrs. William COOPER of Flint, George HELWIG of Buffalo, New York, and Mrs. Russell SHERMAN of Caro. All the brothers and sisters attended the funeral. Mrs. Jaus was a member of the Cass City Evangelical church and the Woman's Missionary Society, and a member of Elkland Arbor, A.O.O.G.

It appears that at least 33 of the 36 adults in this Sunday School class were directly related, through either blood or marriage, to the Striffler, Benkelman and Helwig families who emigrated together from Erie County, New York to Tuscola County, Michigan beginning in the 1860's.
