He may have been a minister, as the Dallas County, MO marriage record of his younger brother, Daniel McClanahan to Sarah Quigley shows that Daniel was married to Sarah by "the Rev. E. F. McClanahan" in the home of of T. H. Quigley. Ken Harvey writest that "Names on marriage cert. are McClahan and Ritten--misspelled but correct date. He served in the Union Army but no records have been found. Recorded as being born in Illinois."
