- The celebrated life of Nelda Colleen Beckcom began on July 21, 1928. She was the second of eight girls and one boy, born to Gladys Craddock Herrington and Mance Herrington. She departed this life for her heavenly home on January 30, 2020 at 91 years, 6 months and 9 days of age.
At seventeen years of age, she married Robert Donald Beckcom. They lived happily together until he passed away after 69 1/2 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sisters; Marguerite Schwartz, Rosie Taylor, Joyce Dickerson, her brother; Harvey Herrington, sister in law; Lucy Bennefield, grandson; Robert Joseph Beckcom, four nieces and three nephews.
She leaves behind children; Donna and Carrol Schrieber, Joel Beckcom, Susan King and Ed Corley, and Greg and Sylvia Beckcom. Grandchildren; Daryl Peveto, Deric Peveto and Dr. Melinda Wenner, Rod Beckcom, Kimberly and Jeff Linder, Chase King, Matthew Beckcom and Luke Beckcom. Great grandchildren; Lanie and Kennedy Linder, Finn, Harper and Beckett Peveto, Sisters; Dorothy Tatom, Fay Dickerson, JoAnn Forse and Jeanette Harvey. Sister in law; Virginia Davis and Helen Herrington and sixteen nieces and eight nephews.
Colleen spent her early years as a stay at home mom. She started a daycare in Bridge City, Texas in the mid 1960's. She provided home cooked meals, haircuts and lots of love to many youngsters with working parents. After moving back to her hometown of Hemphill in 1973, she began working as a teachers aide in the Hemphill school system until she retired in 1993. She began as a substitute teacher, working most school days until she reached 80 years old. She was a gardener, cook, walked two miles daily and did all her own yard work until age 89. At that time she moved to Hemphill Care Center, where she complete her lifes journey.
She lived by faith and loved her family and friends. To all who knew her, her greatest reward will be reuniting with each of you in heaven.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. service time Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Starr Funeral Home Chapel, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas.
Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 2020 in Starr Chapel with Bro. Michael Dickerson officiating.
Burial will follow services in Pine Hill Cemetery with Matthew Beckcom, Luke Beckcom, Rod Beckcom, Jeff Linder, Deric Peveto, Carrol Schrieber, and Ed Corley serving as pallbearers.
