- When he registered for the draft during World War I, he listed his name as Willie James Matthis, resident of Ingold, NC. His date of birth was shown as 13 Apr 1885, and his occupation was farming. His nearest relative was Annie Matilda Matthis, also of Ingold. The was tall and slender, with Brown eyes and dark hair. When he opened a Social Security account in November of 1938, his birthday was instead listed as 13 Mar 1885, with his parents being Beatty T. Matthis and Emma L. Caison.
His North Carolina Death Certificate shows him Willie James Matthis, Married, born 2 April 1885 in Sampson County, NC, a son of B. T. Matthis and Emma Caison, both of Sampson County. His usual home was in Garland, NC, but he died as an inmate of the Raleigh State Hospital of Chronic Cardio Vascular Disease.
