Mary Jean Halbert Baron
Funeral services for Mary Jean Halbert Baron, 66, of Houston were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Houston.
A 4 p.m. service was held in Jacksonville prior to interment at Rest Haven Cemetery.
Mrs. Baron died Monday, June 11.
She was born Jan. 13, 1935 in Frankston, daughter of H.B. and Mattie Petri Halbert.
After graduating from Frankston High School, Mrs. Baron earned a bachelor of music degree from Baylor University in 1955, and a master of education degree in counseling from Georgia State University in 1974.
She performed 22 years of dedicated service at Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, located in the northwest Houston area. She retired in 1997.
Mrs. Baron served in the U.S. Army for five and a half years. At the time of her resignation from the Women's Army Corps in 1962, she had achieved the rank of captain. One assignment during her military service included duties as a commanding officer at Letterman Army General Hospital in San Francisco, CA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Eddie Halbert of Houston and Gaylon Halbert of Jacksonville.
She is survived by her husband of almost 40 years, Donald H. Baron; sons, Richard Baron of Houston, and Robert Baron of Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Wendy Baron of Houston; sisters, Irene Tatum of Mansfield, LA, Virginia Saunders and Lynne Orr of Jacksonville; and a brother, H.B. Halbert Jr. of Sealy; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and neighbors.
Pallbearers were Brian Bounds, Jack Lamkin II, Ronnie Munos, Beall Orr, Joel Scott, W.E. Scott, Harrell Smith and Derryl York.
