- In Virgie Collier Speights June 11, 1964 column about Rev. and Mrs. Bob Strickland, it is noted that Bob's maternal grandparents were "Tom and Beckie (Watkins--sic) MARTIN, and they have five sons and two daughters, Frank, Case, Lip, Jimmy, Ed, Marge and Harriet Ann, his mother" (Old Timer of Sabine County, Texas, p. 54).
The 1900 census showed that Rebecca had five children, four of whom were still living. Based on both the column referenced above, and the various census enumerations from 1850 through 1880, it appears she had at least the seven children listed above, and possibly one other son that may have died relatively young, Clinton (b. 1855). Perhaps the census information could be interpreted as Rebecca had a total of nine children....five deceased and four still living (or vice versa).
