Mary Margaret passed away on May 22, 2013 at Rayburn Healthcare Rehabilitation. Mary Margaret was born in Jasper at Richardson Hospital on July 27, 1941 to Herman Eual and Phoebe McMahon Sargent. She was the oldest of three red headed and freckle faced children. With the birth of their child, Herman and Phoebe's home buzzed with activity as they had three children in cloth diapers all below the age of three. Herman had to build a fence around the open faced wood heater that was located in the home's living room to keep the three toddlers from tossing their overalls into the fire.
Mary Margaret married Dennis Earsel Hyden on December 31, 1960. They met at the age of nine and were married 52 years. On the day he met Mary Margaret, Dennis went home and told his older sister Dixie, " I'm gonna marry that red headed girl when I grow up." And he did. They had two daughters, Pamela Jean and Paula Ann. Mary Margaret felt blessed to have been born, raise her daughters and live her final days surrounded by family and friends in her hometown.
An accomplished pianist, Mary Margaret took her first piano lesson when she was ten-years old. She was the pianist for North Baptist Church in Jasper for more than twenty years. During high school, she was an active member of the Jasper High School Pep Squad. She graduated high school in 1959 and went on to complete her education by graduating from Tyler Business College. She returned to Jasper after college and went to work for Mac's Studio as a professional portrait and wedding photographer. She spent 13 years behind the camera recording memories. She also processed photographs in the dark room, touched up portraits with a paintbrush and built custom frames. After taking time off when her children were young, she went to work for Jasper Independent School District as a bookkeeper in the accounts payable department. In later years, she transferred within the school district to work in the classroom with developmentally challenged students until her retirement.
Mary Margaret was blessed with lifelong friends like Ann Dover, Linda Weaver, Brenda McDonald and the late Kay Byerly. In later years, she often expressed deep admiration and gratitude for all the love shown and visits from her special friend Jean Green. Her very best friend was her sister-in-law Dixie Hyden Cooper. Over the years the two shared much laughter and even a few tears together.
Mary Margaret loved to swim in the community creek with her grandchildren. She loved all of her grand and great grandchildren. She enjoyed taking long drives down country roads with her husband on a Sunday afternoon, working in her flowerbeds, growing ferns, arranging flowers, listening to the religious channel on television, banana split blizzards and listening to her daughters talk and laugh. She was mesmerized by the shape of a dead tree standing alone in a pasture against a blue sky. The sound of a sole piano always made her smile.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dennis Hyden; two daughters Pam Rogers & husband Forrest and Paula Stephenson & husband Reagan, of Jasper; six grandchildren Joshua Anthony Williams & wife Megan, Jenny Lynn Mosley & husband Brent, Tamera Eakin, Ashley Letney, William James Rogers, and Aaron Donald Stephenson; four great grandchildren, and ten nieces and nephews, brother Homer Gerald Sargent and wif, Jo Ann Hancock Sargent, and her oldest living relative 98 year old Uncle Homer Issac Sargent.
Mary Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Eual and Phoebe McMahon Sargent , brother Arthur Herman Sargent, granddaughter Heather Fay Stephenson, father-in-law I.D. Hyden, mother-in-law Davada Divatha William Hyden, nephew Rory Glen Kelley.
Services are under the direction of Stringer & Grffin Funeral Home in Jasper.
