Henry Frank Marschel Jr., born on September 29, 1931 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Henry Frank Marschel Sr. and Nina (Jeffries) Marschel, and passed away on April 24, 2011 in Austin, TX.
He is predeceased by his father Henry and mother Nina, sister Martha Lou Hatchell and her husband Marion Hatchell, brother Glenn William Marschel and his wife Thelma Rose (Zagrodski) Marschel. He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy (Taylor) Marschel; brother, Jerald Marschel and his wife Genevieve of Agency, Missouri; step-daughters, Pamela Hawkins and husband Jim of Point Venture, TX and Sherry McColpin and husband Patrick of Lake Dallas, TX; three step-grandsons, Michael Bridges, wife Lindsay and son Zachary of Lago Vista, TX, David Hawkins, wife Allison and daughters Addison and Karson of Austin, TX, Chris McColpin of Dallas TX; step-granddaughter, Kimberly (McColpin) McSwain, husband Josh and children Brooklyn, Luke, and Leighton of Lewisville, TX; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Reeves. He has many, many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews in California, Missouri and Iowa. He will be greatly missed.
Hank attended Frogge Elementary School and Pickett High School in St. Joseph Missouri. He joined the Air Force in 1948 and completed basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. He was based at Bolling AFB in Washington, DC; The Panama Canal Zone; Langley AFB Virginia; McGuire AFB New Jersey; Frankfurt and Berlin, Germany; McClellan AFB California; Ton Son Nute AFB in Saigon, Vietnam; Hickam AFB Honolulu, Hawaii; and Bergstrom AFB in Austin, TX. He retired from the Air Force on Dec 31, 1970 with the rank of Master Sgt. He spent most of his 22 years as a flight engineer. He traveled to many countries all over the world. He received many decorations, which included the Air Medal, Air Force Commendation medal, National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Longevity medal, Good Conduct Medal, and The Vietnam Honor Medal. He also received the 10,000 hour accident free flying award. While he was in Vietnam he was the flight engineer on Premier Nguyen Cao Ky's aircraft. He went on many trips in Vietnam and a trip to Australia and the Philippines.
On Jan 1, 1971 he was hired by the University of Texas Police Dept. and attended the University of Texas Police Academy and became a licensed Texas Peace officer. He worked at the University until May 31, 1973. He then went to work for the Travis County Sheriffs Dept. He worked as a patrolman for 10 years. He advanced to the rank of Lieutenant and transferred to the Criminal Investigations division. He retired from the Sheriffs' dept. on Dec 31, 1991. He often said he would not take anything for his time in the Air Force and Law Enforcement, and said if he had it to do over again he would. In his younger days he was an avid golfer and spent as much of his free time as he could on the golf course. He was also a commercial pilot and had single engine, multi engine, and instrument ratings. While he was stationed in Hawaii he loved to fly to the other Hawaiian Islands. He spent several of his weekends on the other Hawaiian Islands. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o'clock in the evening until eight o'clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 26th of April at Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be conducted at four o'clock in the afternoon, on Wednesday, the 27th of April at Great Hills Baptist Church, 10500 Jollyville Road Austin, Texas 78759.
