- At the time of the 1940 census, he was a resident of Austin, Travis County, Texas, and a lodger in the home of Troy and Dolly Willingford. He was listed as Hallie Cooper, Male, White, age 20, Single, born in Texas, and working as a truck driver for Bell Factory Ice Cream. Jim Cooper writes that his nickname was "Red," and that he " drove for Kerrville Bus Lines for 43 years, working as a consultant for Greyhound upon his retirement. During World War II he served with the Navy in the South Pacific. As a Boy Scout leader, he was awarded the Scouter's Key and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow. He served as a Girl Scout leader as well. As a member of the Travis County Sheriff's Posse he performed with the mounted drill team and was a charter member of the Travis County Emergency Unit. Pioneer Farm honored him for his many volunteer hours there. He is first seen on the 1930 census listed erroneously as Hollie, the 8 year old daughter of Lewis Cooper."
