Notes |
- The Longview Morning Journal, in January 1976, had an article describing the Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative, which in 1938 helped turn electricity into a reality to hunderes of East Texans in the rural areas of the Piney Woods. On December 16 the first lines were energized. President Roosevelt had promised America "electricity so cheap that it would not be above the means of even the most common family." East Texans, especially R. N. Stripling, T. A. Hargis, and D. N. BEASLEY jumped aboard that drame and were determined to place the rural East Texas family in an enlightened world.....the first pole was set near the first Methodist Church in Shelby County at Shelbyville, Texas in July, 1938.
