- His Texas Death certificate shows that he was married at the time of his death, at age 104, to Janie Gertrude Nixon. His occupation was shown as retired merchant and rancher, and his parents were listed as James Governor Mason and Susan Holbert. He may have taught for a while in Isla, Texas...as the Virgie Speights biography of Pearl Chambers of Sabine County mentions her teacher there was Joe Mason (though he was only 10 years older than Pearl)

Many reasearchers also show them as the parents of William Joel, ca 1871 and Susannah born ca 1874.
