Lowery, and maintained by "Churchwell": ROBERT JAMES PEMBROKE McCANTS born October 13, 1812 in South Carolina where he migrated from to Chambers County, Alabama, shortly before 1840 when he was listed in the census as "McCats". He was a physician and prosperous landowner. He was shot dead on Sep. 21, 1849 by his servant, John. It is said that John was paid to do the deed by a rival physician. Dr. McCants was married to Caroline Elizabeth Allen, both are buried in a fenced area at the rear of the Moses Wheat Cemetery.
