- He enlisted into the U.S. Army near the end of the First World War to find employment to support his family. While serving in Germany, he met the woman who became his second wife, however, and did not return to Sabine County, but instead settling in Pennsylvania. He eventually moved back to East Texas with his second family, settling in Beaumont.
