- Per Kathy Casagranda's annotated 1850 Sabine Parish census, he was born in Mississippi, and first married Edith Low, daughter of Isaac Low.
He was a private, Company K, 25th Louisiana Infantry, C.S.A., and was captured at Murfreesboro, 5 January 1863. He was then sent to City Hospital, Camp Morton, Indiana.
After the death of his first wife, Shelby married Elizabeth Frances Allen, dtr of John Allen and Emily A. Green. They had 8 additional children, all born in Cherokee County. He was buried at the Cook Cemetery.
