      Herbert Terry "Pit" Wych

      Herbert Terry "Pit" Wych, 76, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009 in the Hospice of the Pines, Lufkin. Wych was born on Dec. 24, 1932, in Shelby County. He has lived most of his life in Hemphill coming from San Augustine. He worked as a connector for the Iron Workers Union Local 125 in Beaumont and worked all over the U.S. and other countries suspending bridges and large building and commercial construction primarily working on the installation of the "red iron," the first steel to go up in a structure.

      Wych was in the U.S. Army at the conclusion of the Korean Conflict. His love of life, second only to his family, was rodeoing, especially "bull dogging." He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hemphill, the Gideons, and Masonic Lodge.

      Wych is survived by his wife, Carolyn Minton Wych of Hemphill; son, Mark Wych and wife Amy of Huntington; daughter, Terre McLemore and husband Randy of Nacogdoches; sister, Billie Monceaux and husband Brad of Beaumont; and sister-in-law, Armella Wych of Lumberton. Also four grandchildren; Hillary and Sara McLemore and Natalie and Ruth Wych.

      Visitation was from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27 in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St. in Hemphill.

      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (today), Jan. 28, in the First Baptist Church in Hemphill with burial following in the Myrtle Springs Cemetery in Geneva.

      Services under the direction of Starr Funeral Home.
