Notes |
- Said to have married Abner P. Steele Sr on 4 Feb 1857 in Copiah County. Not able to locate on census records, however. There was an Archibald Steele, born ca 1818 in Tennessee, living with a Martha Steele of the correct age on the 1870 Copiah County, Mississippi census. It appears to have been a second marriage, as several children not much younger than Martha were in the household, and with an eight year gap between the next to youngest child, 9 year old Ella, and the youngest, 1 year old Abner. However, if this is the same couple, and the 1857 date of marriage is correct, then Martha would be the mother the four youngest of the seven children in the household, Mollie age 12, Burras age 10, Ella age 9, and Abner age 1. Shirley Brinkley shows that Martha's husband was indeed named Archibald (11-2-1818/7-9-1879), and not Abner.
