James Madison Cammack was born on November 29, 1849, in Copiah County, Mississippi. He was the son of James Douglas Cammack and Lucretia Ann Corley.
With his brother Thomas Cammack, James Madison Cammack served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War, Company G, 6th Mississippi Infantry. He enlisted in July 1862 and served until the end of the war. Except for this brief period of military service, James Madison Cammack was a farmer all his life.
On August 23, 1873, He married Mary Emma McLemore of Rockport, Copiah County, Mississippi. Jim and Mary Emma Cammack had eleven children: Thomas Fletcher, Willie Newton, Joseph Warren, Luther Sidney, Addie, Lucretia, Lockwood Printess , Edwin Lamar, Seth Page, Benjamin Franklin, and Wilma Emma.
James Cammack moved his family to Paxton in Shelby County, Texas, in 1899, where he helped to organize a Methodist congregation. He died on September 10, 1922, and is buried in the Ramah cemetery near Teneha, Shelby County, Texas.
