Bernard R. Svec was born to Emil Svec and Helen Marie (Fujan) Svec on October 7, 1924 at Milligan, Nebraska and passed away on June 23, 2013 at the age of 88. He attended Climbing Vine District #44 for eight years and graduated from Milligan High School in 1942.
Bernard answered his draft call in May 1943, serving active duty in the United States Navy. He served overseas in the Pacific Theater, Guam and Peleliu. He was honorably discharged in May 1946 at Saint Louis, Missouri. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in Arizona, Florida, Kansas and Newfoundland.
After his Air Force duty, Bernard worked for Bors/Bulin in Milligan, Ahlschwede Ford in Crete and Bob Hammond in Friend as a mechanic on cars and trucks. He married Irene Capek on October 10, 1963.
Bernard was a member of the American Legion Post #240 in Milligan and the V.F.W. Post #7102 in Geneva. His favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing and gardening.
Survivors include: Brother, Lumir Svec; Sister, Ruby (Mrs. Robert) Langhorst; Sister-In-Law, Louise Capek; nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by: Wife, Irene I. (Capek) Svec; Parents, Emil and Helen (Fujan) Svec; Brother, Jim Svec and wife Ruth; 3-year old sister, Betty Svec; In-Laws, Marian Svec; Helen Pribyl and husband Lou, Ruby Oliva and husband Edward; John Capek and wife Rosemary; and Rudy Capek.
Funeral services were conducted from the Farmer & Son Funeral Home-Kotas Chapel on Thursday, June 27, 2013, with Father Rand Langhorst officiating. Casket bearers were Gary Svec, Kevin Svec, Lloyd Svec, Ken Jefferson Russell Langhorst and Glen Capek. Military graveside services were conducted by Milligan American Legion -HSSK Post #240 at the Bohemian National Cemetery with Farmer & Son Funeral Home-Kotas Chapel in charge of arrangements. Memorials are directed to the Milligan American Legion-HSSK Post #240.
