- A graduate of Milligan High School, he played the trombone in local bands and started his musical career at K.G.B.Z. in York and later at K.M.M.J. at Clay Center. He served in the Air Force Band from 1942 until 1946. After his discharge, he played the trombone with such name bands as Tommy Dorsey, Russ Morgan, Lawrence Welch, Ted Weems, Jimmy Joy, Phil Levant and Frankie Masters. (Milligan, p 246).
Obituary
Joe J. Cercle, 87, Grand Island, died Thursday (8/5/04). Played the trombone in a U.S. Army Air Forces band, World War II.
Survivors: wife, Patricia; daughter, Roxan Brennan, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sisters, Rose Krupicka, Geneva, Elsie Cecrle, Lincoln, Maryann Kronhoffman, Tobias, Blanche Chapek, Milligan; three grandchildren.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home, Grand Island. Cremation will follow services, Westlawn Memorial Park Crematory. Private burial, Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation: 4-8 p.m. today, with family greeting friends 4-5 p.m. Memorials: Stolley Park Church of Christ or American Heart Association.
