The family had taken an extended trip to visit Paul Bien's extended family, driving from Houston to Detroit, Flint, Lansing, NY, down the coast of Florida, and finally over to Georgia to see the David Striffler family. As they crossed Louisiana, they were hit head on by a drunk driver, killing her mother and critically injuring her father.
